Having a pet care business is a wonderful privilege. There are so many fur babies that I get loved by. Their parents become an important part of my life too.

I have cried a lot over the years. That's the price that is paid when you have fur babies in your life. Today was the first time that I needed to take one of my clients fur babies to cross the Rainbow Bridge. For various reasons she was unable to go. She said her goodbyes at home and then looked me in the eyes and said, "You will be with him when he goes won't you." I told her, "Of course I will be with him."

Charlie, I love you dearly. You were one of the sweetest, silliest and most tolerant pups I've ever got to care for and be loved by. I know, in God's kindness and goodness, that I will see you again.

Lexies' Luminations....Summer Pet Paw Care

Summer is almost officially here. If you have a pup, here are some things to consider to keep those paws healthy during the summer heat.

1) Consider cooler times like early morning or late evening to avoid hot surfaces.

2) Check the pavement temperature with the back of their hand; if it's too hot to touch, it's too hot for paws.

3) Regular paw pad moisturizing and keeping fur trimmed between pads helps too.

4) Another tip is to keep dogs hydrated with plenty of water, as it helps regulate their body temperature.

5) Consider using paw protection like booties or paw wax to shield from hot surfaces.

6) When you've finished your stroll, inspect for any cuts or burns and clean their paws to remove irritants.

7) Lastly, provide shaded rest areas during outdoor activities.

Lexie's "Luminations"

I'm a lifelong learner. One of the things I really love about having a pet care business is what I have learned along the way....especially from the fur babies I get to spend time with as part of my extended family. Part of my learning process is through the conversations I have with them. One of those wise fur babies is Lexie.

As a 14 year old, she's acquired much wisdom. Recently during one of our conversations she said to me: "Auntie Lori, now that it's almost summer and it's staying hot, I worry about other fur babies and how their paws are handling the hear." I thought about it and I asked her if she thought it might be a good idea to occasionally post some of the wisdom she's gained over the years to benefit other fur babies and their parents. She loved the idea and we decided to call it: "Lexie's Luminations" (as in illuminating...in case you didn't pick up on that). So, our first installment will be following.

Chicagoland winters are unpredictable. One things for certain: it can get frigid. I'd like to share a simple tip with you on keeping your pup warm when out for a walk: regularly brush them.

Our pups coats are a form of insulation. By regularly brushing them, you are removing loose fur that helps maintain a healthy coat, thus improving its insulation.

Last night my Bible study put together goody platters for first responders. One of my friends recounted how her dog Henry, helped himself to a few dozen of her freshly baked treasures while the family was out. Mind you, he's a beagle and had to pull down the table cloth to obtain his b***y. If your sweet pup has ever enjoyed your hard work, please share a picture of your pup and your "Tail of Woe". When you have a fur baby in your life, they being more fun, joy and laughter. These two sweet pups are waiting to bring that into someone's life right now.

These siblings were found abandoned on the side of the road in Indiana. Vets estimate they were born in April which makes them about 6 months old. Today, they are waiting fur someone (maybe you or someone you know) at the Animal Care Center in Downers Grove.
