From Bend Equine Medical Center: Wildfire season is back, so it’s time once again to consider how to protect your horse from respiratory damage caused by smoke inhalation.

Horses' lungs are huge—the average horse's lung volume is 55 L, compared to a human's 6 L. A horse exercising heavily can intake as much as 2,250 liters of air per minute, and the particulate matter within that huge volume of air can lodge within the bronchioles and lung alveoli, causing inflammation and sometimes pneumonia.

Limiting exercise can help minimize the amount of particulate matter allowed to lodge in the lungs during these poor air-quality periods. Horses also need time to fully clear it before returning to work.

Some handy rules of thumb (but keep in mind there's not a lot of data to support exact numbers so you may see some variation in recommendations):

*Avoid trot and canter/lope exercise when air quality exceeds 150 AQI.
*Avoid any forced exercise over 200 AQI.
*For severe smoke inhalation, as in the case of horses literally in the midst of wildfires, four to six weeks of rest is recommended.
*For each day of AQI >150, horses should receive one day of rest *after* the air quality returns to

Barn Swallows are nesting now and stable owners should never remove their nests. Swallows nest approximately April 1 - July 31, and they’re actually a protected species. They’re insectivores, and they are lovely to watch!

Chickadees fledged today. Titmice and Western Bluebirds last week. Violet Green and Barn Swallows next week. Every Spring this place goes to the birds.

FYI riders! True for pastures, too.

Although it might be sunny today, with all the recent rains BABT encourages you to be a good steward of the land. Follow this simple rule – don’t use trails when they are wet and muddy! Give the trails time to dry and stay off the trails when your tracks leave an imprint more than a quarter inch deep.

The True Tale of “The Python that Nana Stomped”
Gracie called out, “Nana! There’s an animal on the nest box!” I came outside to check it out, thinking it must be a squirrel. Animal indeed! One of our resident gopher snakes needing to be wrangled. Again. Every year we learn more about how not to hang nest boxes. 😳😬 Gracie couldn’t stop talking about ”the python Nana stomped”. She thinks I’m Indiana Jones, but I actually pulled it out and let it slither, hissing, away from me. They’re wonderful creatures. As long as they’re not eating our nestlings.

😢 Today was not a good day at all. I decided to go horseback riding, ... something I haven't done in awhile. It turned out to be a big mistake!
I got on the horse and started out fine. Nice and slow, but then we went a little faster. Before I knew it, we were going as fast as the horse could go. I couldn't take the pace and fell off. I caught my foot in the stirrup with the horse dragging me. It wouldn't stop. Hit my head, banged up my back and elbow, pretty good and tore my shirt.
Thank goodness the kind manager at Target came out and unplugged the machine. But, he had the nerve to take the rest of my change so I wouldn't ride the Elephant or Motorcycle. I was also banned from the Merry-go-round. The nerve!
