Just a reminder that your pets need extra consideration in these hot temperatures. Please do not leave your pets unattended in vehicles or campers for any length of time, regardless if the vehicle is running with the ac on. Please make sure all pets have a large supply of fresh water to drink. Please refrain from walking your dogs in the excessive heat. Do not leave your dogs outside for more than a few minutes at a time. Keep in mind, any paved areas are extremely hot in this heat. If you can’t walk barefoot across the pavement, neither can your dog. Paws will burn and paw pads will slough off. Please don’t let that happen. We want your pets to remain healthy and happy.

Please make sure your pets are up to date on Rabies. It’s incredibly important.

FROM THE WINY RADIO NEWSROOM: PUTNAM POLICE TELL WINY THAT THE FOX IN PUTNAM HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR RABIES. FROM Putnam Police Department: On March 24th and March 25th 2024 the Putnam Police Department received a number of reports of an aggressive fox in the area of Church St., Cleveland St. and the surrounding area in which the fox was reportedly aggressive with people and animals (and one male individual was bitten and sought medical attention, according to DEEP). Yesterday evening the fox was caught and euthanized. CT DEEP EnCon Police responded and took the animal for testing.

This afternoon, the Putnam Police Department was notified by the Northeast District Department of Health that the fox tested positive for rabies.

Anyone who may have been in contact with this fox or had animals in direct contact with this fox should seek immediate medical and/or veterinary attention and let a medical professional evaluate the level of exposure.

The public is reminded to refrain from feeding or approaching any wild animals.

Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that can infect all warm-blooded animals, including people. It is spread mostly by wild animals, including foxes. The rabies virus lives in the saliva and brain tissue of infected animals. The Northeast District Department of Health (NDDH) wants residents to know that rabies can be spread by scratches from infected animals or when infected saliva comes into contact with open wounds, breaks in the skin or mucous membranes, such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. NDDH says that it is very important that anyone who may have come into contact with the fox consult with their medical provider on whether they need to seek further medical attention. Also, residents with animals need to make sure the rabies vaccinations are up to date.

Anyone with further questions or concerns may contact NDDH at (860)774-7350.

FROM THE WINY RADIO NEWSROOM: FROM PUTNAM POLICE: FOX ATTACK ON CHURCH STREET: At approximately 3:50 pm, the Putnam Police Department responded to the area of 342 Church Street in Putnam for the report of an aggressive fox, that attacked an adult male. During the encounter, the fox attacked and attempted to bite at the individual. At this time, it was reported the fox made no contact directly on skin of the victim, nor was the victim injured because of the attack. State of CT DEEP EnConn Police are responding to the scene.
Earlier in the day a similar incident occurred where a fox went after a canine in the area of Church Street. At that time, the Putnam Police and State of CT DEEP EnConn Police responded to the area. Prior to police arrival the fox fled the area and was not located.
Police are advising residents of the Church St., Clevland St. and surrounding area are to remain cautious of their surroundings until the fox is either trapped or humanely euthanized and to be protective of their domestic animals. According to the DEEP website keep cats indoors and dogs on leash under close supervision, particularly at night. Never feed foxes, clean up fruit dropped from trees and bird seed below feeders. Secure garbage in animal proof containers and store in a garage or shed.
If anyone sees this animal please contact the Putnam Police Department at 860-928-6565, or in an emergency call 911.
Should anyone come in direct contact with a fox or other wild animal, even the slightest scratch, seek immediate medical attention and let a medical professional evaluate the level of exposure.

Well it seems word got out - We have finally named our little lady female!
Introducing WENDI- WOO.
She is named for our favorite wildlife vet tech, WENDI, at Peake Brook Vet. Clinic.
It's a playful name that I think kids will have fun with.
Hey Kids: Wendi Who?? Wendi Woo!
https://www.facebook.com/PeakeBrookVeterinaryCenter.

On a serious note - The reason I didn't announce this is because Wendi-woo is still on medication for a serious bone infection. She will not be certified as non-releasable until we are sure her jaw has healed. She has an appointment next week for a follow-up x-ray.

Meet Grogu. This pretty lady has been a patient since she was a puppy. Recently, she came in because her water consumption had dramatically increased. She was to the point that she was getting aggressive about her access to water; she just couldn’t get enough of it. Her bloodwork showed that she was dehydrated and had abnormally high levels of sodium and chloride. These symptoms point to salt toxicosis. How does that happen? There are several possibilities. Usually when we see this, it involves a farm dog who helps themselves to the salt lick in the pasture meant for the horses or cattle. Alternatively, an owner will have a water softener and the pet will have access to an open bag of salt meant for that system. Neither of these scenarios pertained to her however. Further discussion with Grogu’s owners revealed that they had recently purchased a Himalayan Foot Detox Dome Salt Lamp! It was accessible to Grogu; most things are when you are a Great Dane. She had apparently been secretly licking the delicious dome! But who doesn’t like a salty treat😉. The Himalayan Salt dome was removed, her obsession with water disappeared and she went back to having her normal interest in water. A recheck of her bloodwork showed normal sodium and chloride levels, and no signs of dehydration. We were quite relieved for the easy fix. Himalayan Salt lamps and domes are becoming increasingly popular. Please be cautious if you have pets; keep them out of reach! Feel free to share so we can get the word out!

As many of us know, dogs can find themselves in precarious situations. Sage found herself in one such situation Saturday evening. She managed to get a marrow bone lodged on her lower jaw. Unfortunately, this is a fairly common occurrence. Once the bone finds it’s way over the lower canines, it is difficult to get the bone off without sedation and without cutting it off. Please be very careful when feeding bones to your dogs. This turned into a Saturday night trip to the emergency room that could have been easily prevented. Fortunately, Sage was just fine after the bone was removed.

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus has now been confirmed in Connecticut. On September 6th, it was reported that 13 of 14 rabbits, at a private residence in Hartford County, suddenly died. The 14th rabbit died on September 8th. We have long feared this horrific virus was going to be in Connecticut. It is now here in full force. This virus is extremely contagious and extremely deadly to both wild and pet rabbits. Many times, the only signs of the disease are sudden death and blood stained noses caused by internal bleeding. Infected rabbits may also develop a fever, be hesitant to eat, or show respiratory or nervous system signs. The only good news is that there is now a vaccine to prevent this disease and it has been approved for use in Connecticut. We strongly encourage vaccinating both indoor and outdoor pet rabbits. We have the vaccine and our clinic is making vaccinating rabbits a priority. The process involves an initial vaccination with concurrent microchip placement and a second booster 3 weeks later. Please call the clinic to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, here are the recommended steps to protect your pets:

1) Do not allow wild rabbits or pet rabbits from other locations to have contact with your rabbits or to gain entry to your facility or home.
2) Do not allow visitors in rabbitries or let them handle pet rabbits without protective clothing (including coveralls, shoe covers, hair covering, and gloves).
3) Always wash hands with warm soapy water before entering your rabbit area, after removing protective clothing and when leaving the rabbit area.
4) Do not introduce new rabbits from unknown or untrusted sources.
5) If you bring outside rabbits into your facility or home, keep them separated from your existing rabbits for at least 30 days. Use separate equipment for newly acquired or sick rabbits to avoid spreading disease.
6) Sanitize all equipment and cages moved on or off premises before they are returned to the rabbitry.
