You may remember from our Lucky Dog series the story of Sunnie (first photo, left), anOur Pal's Placee alum. Sunnie and her little sister, Cocoa, spent 28 nights with us at DB&T while their parents traveled to Australia and New Zealand! Because Cocoa has serious health issues, protocols were put into place to ensure Cocoa remained healthy while in our care and both girls had a great time!! Sunnie and Cocoa were thrilled to see their mom just now when she arrived and happy to be heading home to see dad! Thanks Sharon and Brian for trusting us with the care of our beloved “Sunshine” and Cocoa! 💙☀️

In August 2020, Palmer started attending playtime at DB&T. We discovered Palmer to be the most loving girl who made friends with everyone she met! Eventually, we asked her mom if Palmer could be one of our neutral dogs who help us determine if a new dog is playful, wants to just hang around or even likes other dogs. Periodically, we text Palmer's mom asking, "Can Palmer come to work?" when her expert assistance is needed. Needless to say, most dogs who come to DB&T have met Palmer! At one point we debated changing our name to "Palmer's Pals Place" 😊

Here is Palmer's "You Lucky Dog" story as told by her mom, Madison:

“2 days before the world shut down in 2020 I was scrolling Facebook and saw a post from a friend with a picture of a box of 5 malnourished puppies. They were left with nothing but a small towel in front of a dentist office over the weekend. I grew up around dogs and my mom has always fostered, so I kept tabs on the pups. I debated offering to pick one up, but initially thought I wasn’t ready for a puppy. Especially one who looked like she may require extensive medical attention. 2 days later I got a DM letting me know that each dog was spoken for and off to a good home, but one specific dog’s committed family was a no call, no show. The girl keeping her was running out of time, and if she wasn’t picked up by the end of the day, she would have to take her to the griffin animal shelter (kill shelter). I immediately got in the car, drove 2 hours, and picked up the remaining dog with the intention of getting her to a foster. It was love at first sight! I knew in an instant that Palmer wasn’t going anywhere and that she would be my new baby. The little 4 week old, 2 lbs puppy, is now the happiest and most friendly 60 pound girl who smiles all day long. I can’t imagine my life without her!!

For her birthday, I got her a cheeseburger to celebrate (which I do every year ) and she tried to save it in her bed. Can’t help but think she wanted to bring it with her to daycare to share with her friends 😂"

Palmer, thanks for being our "Lucky Dog" on St. Patrick's Day!!

Presenting our next Lucky Dog, Sunnie! 🍀🌈💙

During a late afternoon torrential downpour, a man took cover at a local Wal-Mart. As he stood waiting for the storm to pass, he witnessed a black SUV throw a puppy out of the moving car into the parking lot of the store. The man immediately went to help the puppy and was able to get the license plate of the car. He took the puppy home and found her to be a loving, sweet girl.

Unfortunately, he was leaving town the next day on business and asked a volunteer of Our Pal’s Place for assistance. Even though our rescue’s mission is to save animals from death in county shelters, we also want to help people who are doing the right thing for the animals. Because we had just completed an adoption and had a space open, O.P.P. agreed to take Sunnie. We were amazed at how smart and loving this little girl was given all that she had just experienced.

We were able to quickly place Sunnie in a home where she thrived for over 2 years but was returned to O.P.P. due to her overly protective behavior. Understandably, Sunnie was heartbroken and confused why she had returned. She was only doing her “job” of protecting the ones she loved. With dedicated care from volunteers, Sunnie slowly began to overcome her depression. Eventually two of our volunteers, Brian and Sharon Wood adopted Sunnie into their home after sadly losing one of their dogs. From Sharon: “…Sunnie settled into our home quickly and has brought joy to our home. She and her adopted sister Cocoa love their daily walks, sitting in the sunshine together, and watching us cook dinner (they love when scraps accidentally fall on the floor!). Sunnie loves finding new places to settle herself – big fluffy blankets, pillows, and feet are her favorite spots, and she loves to share the recliners with anyone who invites her ...”

We are grateful Brian and Sharon let Sunnie and Cocoa sleepover with us at DB&T when they travel! It’s so nice to keep Sunnie in our “O.P.P. family” and we adore her senior sister Cocoa!

Sunnie, you truly are one Lucky Dog!

"Duke is being stubborn and not wanting to get up this morning” ... weren’t we all! You Lucky Dog, Duke!

Duke came to us as a pup in 2020 looking for playtime. He loves hanging out with his best play-friends, Connor and Brandy, and getting a nap in whenever, and wherever, he can!

Happy Monday and one-less-hour of sleep!

Introducing our next Lucky Dog, Paislee!

Paislee has been coming to playtime for 2 years! Now that she knows the routine, Paislee lets us know what she wants to do… which we love! If Paislee arrives and is ready to play, she heads straight for the door to her favorite play area! If she has not woken up for the morning, Paislee will go to the gate that enters the sleepover area for a nap until she’s ready to play. Paislee is a super smart, spunky girl who we adore. Here is Paislee’s story as told by her mom:

"Paislee was a Cobb County shelter dog I rescued she was 1yr old (Top right photo was the first time Paislee and her mom met at Cobb County Animal Services!). As soon as we met she picked me.. lol

She came w some challenges. Ear infection, upper respiratory, infested with fleas. And she was not spayed when I wanted to adopt her so she had to stay and get spayed.

Apparently they spayed her while she was in heat, she had problems urinating. She had to take antibiotics and pain medicine to help. We lived at the vet the first 2 weeks. She started out this broken, sad dog... sick. Then her personality was coming out ♥️

Paislee has come a long way since I’ve saved her. She was a street dog that had no idea how to shut her brain down to sleep or relax. She was on guard constantly. She’s also a worker. She thrives with balance, structure and work. It’s taken about 3 years, me reassuring her she’s here to stay in her forever home. She’s really the most amazing girl I’ve rescued. Paislee is full of life, the happiest girl that wants to please me. It’s so rewarding to watch her grow into the most loving girl. She loves kisses, belly rubs, loves to be challenged, hide and seek is her favorite game... with plenty of treats.

OPP Daycare has been the most AMAZING place for her! She loves her doggie friends.. I can’t say enough about the staff they are all wonderful! She absolutely loves coming weekly! For her, structure & routine is what she needs most.

She’s my partner in crime we are meant to be together FOREVER AND ALWAYS 🫶🏻
Deena Wesley & my girl Paislee 🐾"

You Lucky Dog!🍀🌈⭐️

Pumpkin and her sister, Lizzy, grace our doors each week! While Pumpkin is a senior and enjoys her quiet time, Lizzy is young and loves to engage in play with others. As opposite as they are, Pumpkin and Lizzy are truly a bonded pair who only tolerate being apart from each other in their respective playgroups for short periods of time. Here is Pumpkin’s “You Lucky Dog” story as told by her mom…

"Pumpkin was found wandering in a neighborhood in Conyers and living off trash. A woman accidentally hit her with a car and took her to Georgia Jack Russell Rescue. She weighed 7 lbs. and was barely alive. Once she made it through her first week, she was fostered to the Roose family as a trial run for adoption. Her first week home she sat in my horse-drawn carriage seat like she had been there her whole life. A call was placed to the rescue to let them know she found a home. She competed in Carriage Dog trials, worked in Advanced Agility, was a spokes-dog for Georgia Jack Russell rescue, and completed Advanced Obedience. Pumpkin was also the feature of a national campaign to have a national registry for animal abusers. She is now retired and living large with her best friend, Lizzy the Whippet."

Pumpkin, you truly are one Lucky Dog!

Introducing our first “Lucky Dog”, Julie!🍀🌈

The Intake Team of our rescue was about to leave Clayton County with a transport van full of rescued dogs. In walked an animal control officer (ACO) with a very scared, malnourished girl. The ACO stated she was found tied to a pole abandoned on the side of the road. Our Pal's Place was asked to consider her as the county shelter was full and she would have to stay in an outside run. Intake team member, Eduardo, was immediately drawn to her so the team decided that she would be rescued as well.

Our problem was the transport van was completely full. The only space would be on Eduardo's lap for the hour and half drive back to our rescue... and so it was! Eduardo named her, Julie, and months later adopted her.

When Our Pal's Place - Daycare, Boarding & Training opened, Julie was named Playtime Director. Julie takes her role very seriously and deems herself "Fun Police" if fellow pups need to take a break. All of us here at DB&T adore our "lucky dog", Julie!

Is your companion, one “Lucky Dog”?

Throughout the month of March, we will be posting "Lucky Dog" stories and photos. Share the story of how your dog made his/her way to being your faithful companion or send your favorite "spoiled dog" photo to [email protected]!
