Meet Blue! 👋

Blue came to see Dr. Higginbotham at our Richmond location after losing the ability to use his back legs. He was in pain, unable to walk, and had a blunted pain sensation when he arrived.

We performed an MRI and found that Blue had significant spinal cord compression causing his symptoms. Dr. Higginbotham performed surgery on Blue and he received a lot of TLC from the BVNS Richmond team. He spent the night with us and went home with his dad the next day.

Blue came back to see us a couple of weeks later for his post-op recheck and he was walking! We couldn't be happier with how this sweet boy is doing!

We love getting updates on our patients! 👏

Bryer came to see Dr. Young over the summer for discomfort, knuckling on the left rear leg that progressed to weakness in both hind limbs and difficulty standing. An MRI of his spine and CSF spinal tap were performed and revealed Bryer had Meningomyelitis.

Bryer was treated with an immunomodulator and steroid and is doing really well. He is now comfortably able to get up and get around and get back to doing what he loves, spending time with his dad at the racetrack! 🏎️

Daylight saving time ends this weekend! ⏰

At 2:00am on Sunday, clocks will ""fall back"" an hour, giving us an extra hour of sleep (and snuggle time with our pets!).

As a result of the time change, pets may need extra time to adjust -- something to keep in mind when it comes to their meal times and bathroom breaks.

Did you know last week was National Veterinary Technician Week? This week is set aside to recognize LVTs' tremendous contributions at BVNS and in the veterinary community. Here is some of our team at BVNS Woodstock celebrating !

Here are a few facts you may not know about the veterinary technician role (it would be impossible to list them all!):

💙 Veterinary technicians handle many of the same responsibilities that nurses and other professionals perform for physicians in human medicine. Like veterinarians, veterinary technicians are trained to work with several species of animals.
💙 Veterinary technicians are trained to: take and record vital signs, obtain and record patient case histories, perform laboratory tests, take and develop radiographs (x-rays), draw blood, collect stool samples, sterilize equipment and exam rooms, administer medications, injections, IV fluids and anesthesia, assist in dental cleanings, remove sutures, clean wounds, and change dressings.
💙 In addition to direct contact with patients, veterinary technicians also work closely with our clients to communicate patient history, vital signs, test results, at-home care instructions, and much more!

Reunited and it feels so good! 💙

Shiro is such a handsome boy and a previous patient of our Leesburg location. Shiro went down to Richmond where he saw Dr. Trub and the Richmond crew for dragging his hind legs on 9/28/23.

His MRI revealed a ruptured disk, causing compression of his spinal cord and causing him to be unable to use his hind legs. Dr. Trub performed surgery, a hemilaminectomy, to decompress his spinal cord.

Following surgery, Shiro was happier, more comfortable, and most of all, excited to go home!

Meet Bandit! 🐾

Bandit is a 2-year-old Border Collie who came to see Dr. Trub in Richmond for seizures. He was having multiple seizures per month, sometimes multiple per day, despite being treated with an anti-seizure medicine. He was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy as the cause of his seizures.

Several dose adjustments were made to his medication to attempt to better control his seizures, all with limited success. We decided to implement some holistic strategies in addition to his traditional anti-seizure medicine to see if he would improve. We started acupuncture, herbal therapy, and diet therapy and he has responded amazingly well. For Bandit at least, these treatments were the magic bullet. He has been seizure-free for the last 6 months!!

Bandit’s family stated, “Many, many thanks for helping us help Bandit. He's a joy and living a very good life thanks to your wisdom and guidance. Bandit is the sweetest boy and is happy. Getting his seizures under control has made a real difference in his life and personality.” 💙

Ziva came to visit our Richmond team for her 18-month recheck and we couldn't be happier with how she's doing! 👏

Dr. Young and his team first met Ziva in December of 2021, when she presented for seizures. An MRI of Ziva's brain was recommended and revealed a left forebrain meningioma.

After carefully reviewing treatment options, Ziva came back in January of 2022, where Dr. Young and his team successfully performed a craniectomy. Today her MRI shows her to be tumor-free for 18 months!

Ziva is such a sweet girl, and we are so happy she continues to do well! ❤️

Remember Willie, the paraplegic cat that had a hemilaminectomy with us on August 8th? 🐱

He came back for his surgery post-op exam where his owner reports that he continues to be pain-free and able to walk again!

Nugget, a 10-year-old male, American Eskimo, presented to BVNS Woodstock for vestibular & balance issues in late July.

On Dr. Akin's exam, she noticed mild ataxia of pelvic limbs and a right head tilt, indicating an issue with his right vestibular system. With a brain MRI, Dr. Akin found and diagnosed a mass along the right side of the brainstem, consistent with neoplasia.

Nugget's owners did not hesitate to pursue radiation treatment with the help of our close referral friends at Upstate Vet Emergency & Specialty Care. Nugget graduated from radiation therapy and looked and felt absolutely fantastic at our follow-up exam.

We are so proud of you, Nugget!

Not only is Lindsey highly skilled in her technical and anesthesia skills, she is the epitome of patience and kindness, and she does not hesitate to go above and beyond for all her patients.

Let us introduce you to Sadie!👋

An eight-year-old, FS, Papillon Mix, Sadie came to BVNS Woodstock for being completely down in her rear and having a painful back. Dr. Neary diagnosed an acute, Type 1 disc extrusion at L1-L2, causing severe spinal cord compression.

He performed a hemilaminectomy the same day to decompress her spinal cord. At the time of her surgery discharge, Sadie had regained the ability to walk. Now, with a little help from the team, she is regaining her balance to bear weight on her own.

Help us find Bear! 🐻

Bear is a two-year-old male, tan pitbull who has gone missing in our area. Super sweet and approachable. Bear has epilepsy and has not received his seizure medication since going missing last Friday, the 28th.

We are sharing to spread awareness in hopes Bear can make it home safely.

Gizmo, a seven-year-old male Dachshund, presented to BVNS Woodstock for acute onset of pelvic limb paraplegia. He had pain along his thoracolumbar spine and had some incontinence issues. After an MRI of his thoracolumbar spine, we discovered that Gizmo had several areas of multifocal IVDD. However, the disc at T11-T12 was causing moderate to severe spinal cord compression. Surgery was his best chance at neurologic recovery.

Dr. Akin performed a hemilaminectomy. Post-surgery, Gizmo was still a non-ambulatory paraplegic, but deep pain had returned to his feet.

After two weeks, strong motor function has returned to his rear limbs and he is ambulatory (although wobbly). Dr. Akin is very optimistic about continued improvement.

Gizmo loved seeing his exam room assistant, Kendra, his surgical technician, Shelby, and Dr. Akin again for his recheck!

This sweet pup is "Joey", a four-year-old male Boxer Mix. Joey presented to BVNS Woodstock in March to see Dr. Neary for suspected vestibular signs. He was lethargic, ataxic, and had a left-sided head tilt.

After a brain MRI and CSF tap, Joey was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE). Since then, Joey has been maintained on steroid therapy for his immune-mediated inflammatory disease, and all his neurologic signs have decreased and/or resolved.

We’re happy to hear that Joey is doing well, and his family will continue to stay in touch with Dr. Neary and our team to ensure that he is tolerating his steroids well and maintaining an excellent quality of life. Way to go, Joey! 👏

Say hi to Oliver 🖐️

This handsome eight-year-old Dachsund mix got all dressed up in his best tie for his medical management follow-up with the team at BVNS.

Dr. Akin diagnosed him with cervical spine IVDD via an MRI in April. Together, the BVNS team and the owners collaborated to develop the best treatment plan.

After weeks of pain management and strict rest, Oliver has significantly improved and continues to be pain-free. Way to go, Oliver! 🐶

Meet Phife 👋

Phife, a nine-year-old mixed breed, presented to BVNS for being acutely down in rear, also known as pelvic limb paraplegia.

However, his case is extremely interesting because Phife has only three limbs. So, in his case, he was monoplegic. Phife's thoracolumbar MRI revealed a disc herniation at L1-L2, causing marked spinal cord compression/hemorrhage.

Even with the surgery, there was the possibility of myelomalacia, a non-reversible softening of the spinal cord secondary to a severe injury, which was discussed at length with the owner. The owners agreed to pursue surgery with the understanding that it was the best chance for full neurologic recovery.

Dr. Akin performed a hemilaminectomy on May 31st. Phife has returned intermittently for rechecks, and on June 15th, Phife had strong motor function in his back leg and was even walking on his own! Phife's road to recovery is still in progress, but he has greatly improved! 🐕
