Meet "Bob." Bob is a 1 year old domestic short haired cat. He presented to our ER services for vomiting up hair ties. Dr. Dutton examined him and performed radiographs. She was able to see a bundle of what suspiciously looked like hair ties in his stomach. We took him to surgery and found 31 of them! He recovered with us overnight and is now home with his siblings, living his best cat life!

Congratulations on deciding to brush your pet’s teeth! Here are some are step-by-step instructions to assist you.

Gather Your Supplies
Soft-bristled toothbrush for pets or finger toothbrush.
Veterinary toothpaste for pets. (Please note that human toothpaste can be toxic to dogs and cats!)
Soft gauze sponge or cloth.
If you are unsure where to find these supplies, please ask your veterinarian for recommendations.
Remember, patience is a virtue – don’t force the issue. Keep this positive, and you will be surprised how successful you can be!
Begin by Gently Handling and Manipulating Your Pet’s Mouth
Cats teeth
If your pet is calm, start with affectionate touches and give her treats.
Begin to gently touch or manipulate your pet’s mouth. As long as your dog or cat is quiet, responds to requests, and allows you to manipulate her mouth, give her IMMEDIATE rewards.
Slowly advance from moving her lips with your fingers to running your fingers along her teeth and gums. Once your pet is comfortable with your fingers in her mouth, try to put a moist, soft gauze sponge around your finger and move it along her teeth.
It will likely take several sessions to work up to this point. Give rewards throughout and end the session if your pet resists.
Add in Toothpaste
Once your dog or cat is comfortable with the sponge or cloth along her teeth, add a veterinary toothpaste or gel to the gauze sponge.
Keep up the praise and rewards! Make it fun!
Introduce the Toothbrush
Bring out the toothbrush. Touch it to your pet’s face, put it under her lips, and gently work it around. Pick a toothbrush that is easy for you to use.
If your pet likes the toothpaste, have her lick it off the toothbrush. Don’t forget to praise and reward with treats!
Start Brushing
Use a circular motion and focus on your pet's gum line.
Initially concentrate on the outside surfaces of her teeth, under her lips. Eventually work your way up to all of your dog or cat’s teeth. Spend about 2-3 minutes brushing her entire morning.

Happy Brushing!

SPRING is in the air! Although this weather is likely just a little tease, it’s making most of us think about Spring!
Here are a few things to remember about your pets, as Spring time approaches.

🌷 Lilies and other seasonal plants can be toxic to pets. Be mindful when choosing your garden or house plants.

🧹 Cleaning products are potential poison threats to pets. Keep cleaners out of
reach and secured at all times.

🦟 Feel free to consult with one of our staff members about parasite protection and prevention against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.

🐾 Collar ID tags should be worn during outdoor time. Make sure microchip information is up to date.

🛁 Keeping your pet clean and groomed prevents skin irritations from allergies, fleas and ticks. It also keeps their temperature regulated.

Today we celebrate a huge milestone within our hospital. We opened our doors 25 years ago with Dr. Sherry Weaver & just 4 staff members. We have grown over the years to now be able to have 15 doctors and 100 support staff. We increased our boarding and grooming capabilities as well as our medical offerings by going 24/7 a few years ago. Our most favorite patients are yours! If you are in the area today, stop by and wish our team "Happy Birthday!"

As winter approaches and temperatures fall, you may think that you can give your pet a break from their flea, tick & heartworm medications. But not so fast — many dogs are at risk for heartworm disease as well as ticks and fleas year-round. Not only can fleas find their way into your home during the cooler and colder months, but many tick species can survive – and even be active and thrive – throughout the winter, too. Heartworm disease has been reported in all 50 states. All it takes is a few days of temperatures above 57 degrees Fahrenheit and the heartworm larvae can develop to the infective stage within the mosquito, ready to be transferred to pets with a single mosquito bite. With increasingly warm winters, this is no time to let your guard down.

Did you know that Cuddling, snuggling and scratching is good for people and animals together. Cuddling with a dog or cat leads to the release of the 'happiness' hormone, oxytocin in both animals and us. The hormone relates to feelings of trust and empathy and can contribute to a strong human-animal bond.

Meet Prairie! She is an 11 week old Scottish Terrier. She came to our hospital as a referral from a neighboring clinic to have an endoscope procedure. She had been chewing on her toys at home and had ingested several small pieces of them. After a physical exam with Dr. Weaver and radiographs to confirm that the pieces of the toy were still in her stomach, she was sedated and scoped. Luckily, we were able to remove the pieces with the scope which is less traumatic than her having to have surgery. Her pet insurance, Trupanion, covered 2/3 of the cost of the procedure on Friday! Prairie recovered quickly and was home with her owners in a few hours!

Meet Ozzy! He is a 2 & 1/2 year old Boston Terrier Mix. Ozzy was recently in our hospital due to eating some things he should not have. He had an exam by Dr. Folkerts and diagnostics that led us to confirm that he had a linear foreign body (basically, his intestines looked like a scrunchy). This is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to your pet. Our medical team jumped into action and took Ozzy to surgery to help remove the material he ate (hair and plastic pieces) and repair his intestines to make them feel better! Ozzy was hospitalized under the watchful eyes of our doctors and technicians for several days. Initially, things were touch and go for him. He stayed with us until he was eating well and able to be discharged. His mom sent a heartfelt thank you note and a sweet treat to thank the team!

PROTECT THEIR PAWS!

Like our chapped lips, cracked paws can be annoying and painful. Plus, built up snow and ice can irritate the sensitive skin between their toes. Salt can also irritate paw pads.

Some helpful ways to keep cute paws protected:

🐾 Clear away any debris that tracks indoors.

🐾 Wipe their paws, after going outside.

🐾 Use rubber booties.

🐾 Limit the amount of outdoor playtime or walks.

🐾 As always, call us if you have any questions.
