Another great session with our brilliant trainer Palmer. Today we rode in the outdoor and Sanzon proved himself to be the same horse regardless of the view.

Here are 15 interesting facts about a horse's brain:.
1. A horse’s brain is relatively small compared to the size of its body, and accounts for only about 0.1% of its total weight.
2. Despite their small size, horses have very complex brains, with a highly developed cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for conscious thought, decision-making and memory.
3. Horses can learn and remember complex tasks, such as navigating a jump course or performing a dressage routine, through a process called associate learning.
4. Like humans, horses have a left hemisphere and a right hemisphere in the brain, each with specialized functions. The left hemisphere is responsible for the processing of logical and analytical information, while the right hemisphere is more involved in emotional processing and creative thinking.
5. Horses have a great memory and can remember specific people, places and experiences for many years.
6. Horses can learn by observation, and often they can acquire new behaviors and skills simply by observing other horses or humans.
7. Horses have a very sensitive sense of touch and can detect even the slightest pressure or movement on their skin. This helps them respond to subtle cues from your rider or guide.
8. Horses can process visual information very quickly and accurately, allowing them to avoid potential hazards and navigate their environment with ease.
9. Horses are social animals and rely on nonverbal communication to interact with other horses in their herd. This communication is facilitated by the horse’s brain, which can interpret subtle changes in body language, facial expressions and vocalizations.
10. Ultimately, like all animals, horses have a unique personality and individual traits that are shaped by their experiences, genetics and environment—all of which is reflected in their brain function and behavior.
11. Horses have a very strong sense of smell and their odor bulb, which processes smells, is relatively large compared to other parts of their brain.
12. The brain, which is responsible for coordinating movement and balance, is also relatively large in horses. This is because horses must be able to move quickly and efficiently to escape predators or navigate through difficult terrain.
13. Horses have a very high pain threshold, which is believed to be related to how their brains process pain signals. While this can be beneficial in some situations, it can also mean that horses may not show obvious signs of pain, making it harder for their caregivers to detect and treat underlying health issues.
14. The hippocampus, a part of the brain involved in learning and memory, is particularly well developed in horses.. This allows them to remember not only specific experiences, but also general concepts and patterns that they can apply to new situations.
15. Finally, studies have shown that horses, like other animals, are capable of experiencing emotions such as fear, happiness, and anger. These emotions are believed to be mediated by the limbic system, a group of interconnected brain structures that play a key role in regulating mood and behavior.

Managing a public high traffic social media page does come with an elevated level of challenge.

HAWS has a mission and a passion that is not shared by all who visit our page. Considering that 357,000 people have elected to hit the "follow" button, we know that many of them are from followers that do not like what we do. On a daily basis, we block idiots and as****es that try to stir the pot, knowing that they coud simply leave or scroll on. Of course, we get the usual annoying Trolls, that want you ladies to send them a friend request. NEVER respond to those.

The other quick way to get yourself blocked from this page is to;
refer to the Wild Horses as feral, invasive species, or non-native.

We don't care what you believe or if it does not fall in line with our research and knowledge. I promise that HAWS will not visit your website or page to disqualify your position. I also promise that if you try to do that on our page, you will be permanently blocked.

Furthermore, if you cause an argument that gets our HAWS base riled up, your comment will be deleted.

Our mission at HAWS, is to promote awareness of the natural plight of the Wild Horses in Alberta, including natural predation and human interference. Our aim is to preserve these horses in their natural state and environment.

SALT stations as previously mentioned, are placed by HAWS, in natural areas that the Wildies frequent. Areas that they always have frequented. Although the horses love the salt and actually benefit from it, it is not necessary for us to provide it. They have natural salt licks out there. We place the blocks in popular areas to film and research the band dynamics and population trends. In doing so, we have debunked the majority of the previous propaganda regarding these horses. Unlike any other source, "If we say it ..... We can Prove it".

After 10 years of full time, boots on the ground, year round all weather research, we have a pretty good handle on the truth and reality of the Alberta Wild Horse story.

We are well aware that there are plenty of idiots and as****es still out there monitoring our page. As long as you remain silent and off of the page, then we won't have to add to the blocked list.

For those of you new to our page, here's a brief background to the Alberta Wild Horse.

Near the end of the 1600's, Spanish horses brought to the Americas in the 1550's began to migrate into Alberta. This of course was long before colonization of the west in Canada. Eventually the domestic horse (Drafts and Quarterhorse) would become a major contributor to development in Alberta, and horses were brought in large numbers for farming and industry. With the introduction of modernized machinery, many of the Draft horses were no longer needed, and in many cases released to the wilderness. Also, many Outfitters, would free graze their stock in the hills and they would also add to the boodlines of the Spanish migrants. In the mid 1600's King Louis, from France, sent numerous horses to our country, specifically the Canadian Horse breed.

In 2014-2015, HAWS set out to research the makeup of the Alberta Wild Horse. We collected numerous hair samples (over 100) from the wild areas. A parrallel study was being conducted by Dr. Poissant, at the University of Calgary. Our samples went to Dr. Gus Cothran, at Texas A&M University.

The results were amazing. The DNA markers were overwhelmingly as follows;

* Mixed breeds of Darft
* Canadian Horse
* Indian Pony
* Strong connection to the Spanish horses, particulary the Andalusian

At one time, a couple hundred thousand Wild Horses roamed the western plains of Canada. During both World Wars, tens of thousands of these horses were rounded up and sent overseas for transport and food. Constant persecution and cruel activites nearly wiped them out until HAWS began looking into the truth and helped to stop the culls in 2015. The current aerial count within the six EMZ (Equine Management Zones) (2.2 million acres) is just north of 1200. HAWS has proven a decline of the Wild Horse population over the past six years.

The Alberta Wildie, has evolved into a breed of it's own. Surviving over 400 years of adversity gives them the full right to be called WILD.

Good reminder.
If this is how you trailer your horse on the drivers side, please stop it immediately! Yesterday made the 3rd time in recent years that I’ve had to put a semi in the ditch (maintained control, not wrecked) to keep from decapitating your equestrian friend with his head 3 1/2 ft over the center line on a narrow Missouri road Thank you!
