Pond Store History

According to local records, the Pond, from which the store derived its name, was built by the county as a watering place for oxen, horses, and mules which were used in hauling cotton and other produce to Fort Adams by wagon for transshipment via riverboat.

The first store and post office was destroyed by fire. In 1881 the present structure was built.

Although the store is currently closed, it still retains its original charm with hardwood floors, long rows of wooden shelves, display cases and wooden bench on the front porch.

Present proprietor is Liz Chaffin. Tours of the house and store are available by appointment ($5.00 per person). The store is not a working store at this time.

Pond Store Cabins

Each Pond Store cabin is a quaint one-room cabin furnished with two queen-sized beds and a sleeping loft. The spacious cabin also has a kitchenette with sink, stovetop, and mini-refrigerator.

This is an ideal getaway cabin for families or couples. There is no WIFI, no TV service, and limited cell service so you can enjoy country living at its finest. The store is currently not open so bring your necessary supplies.

Nightly charge is $125 with a onetime charge of $60 for cleaning, administration fees and taxes. Small pets are welcome for an additional $40.

Reservations can be made by calling Liz Chaffin at 601-888-4426. Arrangements will be made at that time for payment and to procure the cabin key.

Clark Creek State Park

The Clark Creek Nature Trail is 300 yards from Pond Store. It is a state park with 700 acres in the steep Loess Bluffs, featuring some 50 waterfalls, ranging from 10 to 30 feet in height.

This area is a paradise for bird watchers, photographers, hikers, and botanists. Come see the area depicted in many John James Audubon paintings.

Visitors should be medically fit before hiking the trails because the terrain at Clark Creek is physically demanding.

Motorized vehicles and overnight camping are not allowed. Only foot traffic is permitted.

Clark Creek is beautiful and enjoyable year-round. The park is currently closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
