Just finished up this monster buck a client brought me for restoration. The deer had died in full velvet, most likely from EHD. Because of this, the rack was super porous and not fully hardened. In addition, 18 of the antler tips were broken or chewed off. For those curious, I rough scored it at 186.25 gross.
First steps were a thorough cleaning and peroxide bath. I then had to shape new antler tips by hand then sand them down to match. Next, I had to seal the antlers with a compound to cover the pores followed by another sanding.
Next up was the painting process beginning with a base coat of off white followed by a sealer. Next up was the first coat of brown, again followed by a sealer. This process continued through 6 colors, most subtle but adding depth and character. Last was lightly sanding the antlers to pull out the light under coatings like a buck rubbing. Then, a final seal.
