There is a puppy in my Monday night HyBar class that reminds me SO much of my FIRST obedience training dog, Abby.

Abby was Border Collie and spaniel mix we guessed, there was no DNA testing available at that time.

Abby was my first dog in my working adult single life, and she also accompanied me on a few road trips to Inyokern California from my home in Martinez, California.

Abby also flew on an airplane from SF to Duluth MN for a vacation. That was super scary to me, flying my beloved dog in a crate, that was put into cargo. She handled everything like a champ.

Her sit-stay was so solid, that when I walked to my local Safeway grocery store, I put her on a sit-stay and went inside to grab a few items, came back, and she was in exact same spot.

I stopped doing that when Judie Howard told me someone could steal her. (gasp!) Judie Howard with Arydith Obedience School is where I got my start in dog training.

Judie hired me and for 2 years, I learned a lot being an Apprentice. Judie Howard was a pioneer in the positive dog training movement, she was not as well known as Dr Ian Dunbar, who was doing some pioneering dog training in Berkeley around the same time that I was with Judie Howard.

=so grateful to Abby. That was a long time ago, and I carry all that valuable foundation obedience knowledge sharing it with all who hire me.

Veterinarian Ignored Paralyzed Puppy

Original post was from August 22nd. On August 22nd afternoon, Trudy somehow injured herself and to this day I don't know how.. *** since posting this two Veterinarians from our visit called and we shared insight and they listened to suggestions I feel would improve future Veterinarian-Client relationships. *** I gave constructive feedback. I felt validated and feel that things will change for the better. . I have been writing about that experience and call it: The story of Trudy Otter, my puppy, and how ACTIVE LISTENING might have saved her life. Briefly, a well known ER Veterinarian office handled the aftermath, with grace and showed great character. what can be done for future accidents like Trudy’s accident and how we can all learn from our experience and add a few things into the check in process to get a better snapshot of client. The accident was on August 22nd, and she passed away August 25th. Sleepless and restless with Trudy’s life and abrupt death prominently occupying almost every waking hour, last week Trudy’s doctor called me from her personal cell phone, we talked for 45 minutes and closure came about for Trudy Otter’s unfortunate situation. I received a second phone call from one of the medical directors. True, we agree that despite best efforts, Trudy's case went wrong on a few levels. She received my constructive feedback with grace and I feel that future clients can look forward to implementing Active Listening skills. August 22nd... afternoon approximately 2pm. there was a LOUD SCREAM from the backyard (after the fact I now know that it was Trudy). Horrific accident. AFTER the fact, sifting through the information and from the looks of Sheyna after the SCREAMING of a puppy ........ guessing at my best... Sheyna runs at upwards of 30 mph. Guessing that somehow Sheyna's speed and muscular mass of 40 lbs slammed into Trudy's back. That impact, is what paralyzed Trudy. ON August 22nd, I did not know what happene

Goodbye Trudy Otter

Trudy is in pain. Last night checked into MedVet in Akron, where they claimed to take x-rays of her spine. The Veterinarian decided that Trudy did not have any broken bones, and we were sent home with pain meds. * Warning: this video is hard to watch. The puppy is trembling and shows signs of being in pain.

Trudy and I are at MedVet tonight. Trudy somehow injured herself. I heard a loud awful yelping in pain, I ran outside and called the dogs. Sheyna limped in from the woods , her front shoulder….Trudy went indoors asap and went in her crate . Around 5 pm I tried to coax Trudy to please come out and she wouldn’t move. I got her outside and she sat. Like this. Forever I couldn’t figure out why and it was unclear “where” she was hurting. I’m 4 hours at ER. It was a busy night for them and we are finally getting x rays done. Poor little puppy girl. 7 months old today.
