"Tiny continues to do really well. He has now mastered sit, lay down, shake, and this week we worked on “wait”. I will lay a treat down in front of him and tell him “wait” he will wait until I say go for it. I was not sure how he would do with it, but he is learning by leaps and bounds! He also loves the enrichment puzzle. He figured out all 3 levels easily. He gets excited in the evenings when I pull it out. He just knows what it’s for! He also LoVeS the snow! Loves to get a huge face full of it!"

Neither of them are microchipped or wearing any ID. They are both small in size, and seem to have been outside on their own for a while now.

Meet Max! Max is a very lovable boy who wants nothing but attention and treats. Max knows how to sit, shake, and give his other paw, though his food enthusiasm might cause him to get a bit too excited. He catches about 50% of the time, but his strong food motivation makes him a great candidate for training. Max doesn’t show much interest in toys, but his love for treats makes him easy to engage with and train. Max seems to be friendly with other dogs, we recommend a meet and greet to ensure a good fit.

UPDATE ON LILLY'S CUSHING'S TEST!

We wanted to share that Lilly’s test results came back positive for Cushing’s disease, and she also has low thyroid levels. Unfortunately, this means that Lilly will need to be on medication for the rest of her life to manage her conditions.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to help us get the test done.

"Hello from Pilots foster home. Pilot continues to be a delight. He’s such a fun, silly boy. We have now went one week with no accidents in the house. He’s getting along well with his foster sisters. He likes to get a little rambunctious at times and get in their face, but the girls do not like that. with a little redirection They all settle back into place and play. He is very curious of my two cats, And he thinks their BFFs , when my cats want nothing to do with him and run for their lives. He enjoys being outside and is walking fairly well on a lead. He loves to be wherever his person is, And has to be snuggled up against you Or on your lap. Sometimes that means
sitting on your foster sister when she gets to sit by the human. Lol"

Got this sweet guy a plain burger and then took him back to the shelter. Words can’t even begin to explain how incredibly thankful we are to have experienced the Dogs Playing For Life Program. It’s truly been a game changer for our shelter dogs and has impacted our team and the dogs in our care beyond anything we could have imagined. This program has changed the way we approach care, enrichment, and behavior. We plan to see shorter lengths of stay, this will help our dogs grow more confident, and most importantly give the dogs a chance to thrive with other dogs in homes. One of the most beautiful transformations we’ve seen is with Louise, a dog who has spent much time as the shelter struggling to get along with other dogs. Now, she’s playing in groups, confidently engaging with other dogs, and showing a side of her we’ve never seen before. We are forever grateful for this life changing experience and excited for all of the beautiful changes to occur since implementing this program to the shelter. Thank you to Dogs Playing For Life for giving staff and the dogs a life changing experience.

Apollo has a different way of enjoying the fair! He convinced volunteer Roger to let him roll down the hill before jumping up and playing in the creek. Then they climb back up and do it all again. TBH we're not certain who is having more fun! #wehavethebestvolunteers

UPDATE: Schmoo will be going into foster to adopt today! Schmoo will be at the Wayne County Fair searching for his forever family today until 3pm! Schmoo is just under 2 years old, dog friendly, likes children and rides great in the car!

We Love Dogs!

The Wayne County Dog Shelter was founded in September 2015. We are a county shelter meaning we are operated by Wayne County and funded by the sale of Dog Licenses as well as private donations. Our shelter takes in approximately 650 dogs per year. These dogs are primarily found running loose throughout Wayne County but we also take in Owner Released dogs on a case by case basis.

Our goal is to be the primary resource in Wayne County for all things dogs. We love our dogs and are capable of providing the utmost care for those that come through our doors. We work tirelessly with each and every dog to return it to it’s owner or rehome it into a new loving furever home.

Please check out our photo albums to view our adoptable dogs and be sure to check out our events page as well. All of our adoptable dogs are currently $75. This includes a 5way vaccine, bordetella, dewormer, rabies vaccine, flea treatment, heartworm test, microchip, and dog license.
