Thinking about adopting a dog/puppy this Holiday season? Please read the following before doing so.
Hey everyone! 🐶💕 As dog lovers, we all know that our furry friends bring so much joy and companionship into our lives. But to truly enjoy a harmonious relationship with them, it's essential to invest time in training and understanding their unique behaviors, especially those influenced by their breed.
✨ Why Training is Crucial:
1. Improves Behavior: Training helps curb unwanted behaviors—like barking, jumping, or chewing—leading to a well-mannered companion.
2. Enhances Safety: A well-trained dog is less likely to run into dangerous situations or react unpredictably. This is especially important in public spaces!
3. Strengthens Bond: Training creates a deeper connection between you and your dog, built on trust and communication.
4. Boosts Confidence: Dogs thrive on routine and structure. Training can help them feel more secure and confident in their environment.
🐕 Understanding Breed Behavior:
Each dog breed has its own set of instincts, traits, and energy levels. For example:
- Herding breeds (like Border Collies, Old English Sheepdogs, Cattle dogs…etc) may require more physical activity and mental stimulation.
- Toy breeds (like a Yorkshire Terrier, Brussels Griffons, Chihuahua…etc) might be more social and require different handling.
- Working breeds (like the Cane Corso, Anatolian Shepherd, Irish Wolfhound..etc) often need tasks to keep them engaged.
-ALL BREEDS- need proper energy release and mental stimulation. It’s harder for the human to train and the dog to retain knowledge if they have pent up energy.
…ETC.
By understanding specific breeds behaviors, temperaments and instincts you can tailor your training approach to meet your dog’s needs, leading to a happier, safer and healthier life for them!
📚 Tips for Effective Training:
- Start early: The sooner you begin training, the better!
- Use positive reinforcement: Reward good behavior with treats, praise, or playtime. Or find the proper technique required for your dog’s breed/mix by discussing it with reputable trainers.
- Be consistent: Set clear rules and stick to them.
*If you send your dog to a “board and train” facility, please be sure to do your research on how reputable they are but, also, STICK TO THE TRAINING once your dog is returned home.*
- Educate yourself: Read up on your dog’s breed to understand their specific needs and quirks.
Remember, every dog is unique, and patience is key! Let’s work together to create a loving and well-behaved fur family. Before searching for your new family member, please think about the time and attention that is required to start their new life off safely and efficiently. Your new found knowledge on certain breeds will help guide you to the proper training techniques required to assure that your new family member lives the best and safest life they possibly can . Training and understanding body language/ cognitive behavior and breed traits is an absolute MUST, especially with puppies. It isn’t just to make the humans life easier it’s primarily to make the dogs life the best and safest it can be! So before you go out and purchase a new living and breathing “holiday gift” just to potentially decide “ this is too much we need to return them”….please make sure you understand the significance and importance of understanding the time, patience, effort love and attention that is needed.
This is the time of year that so many shelter animals receive false hope by getting adopted, learning a new families personal routines just for them to end up back in a lonely and cold kennel, which also holds a major part and reason as to why shelter dogs aren’t as trusting of humans and have a harder time being able to get adopted out.
Let’s make this year the year that the percentage of shelter returns and shelter capacities are lower than they’ve ever been! If you’ve read all of this, thank you and please share this message🐶🐾♥️
