Today's Project
Hosing the walls of the indoor.
It takes so many hours a day just to care for the horses. Then, us barn owners , have these lists. Mine floats around in the sky and is everywhere I look.....as I check things off, more is added. Never ending rolodex ( I guess that dates me š¤£š¤£š¤£) of things that need to be done.
There is always more to do.
Lemynade 5 months
Are You Still Dreaming ?
I am.
I still dream about what I want in my life . In fact I bred a horse to hopefully realize my dreams on. So....gotta wait and watch what shapes from that, and yet the dream is in motion.
Did you stop dreaming ?!? Why ?
I think dreams are what keeps us young, motivated, excited about life and adventure. Dreams sure do change over time. 17 yr old Jenn wanted to go to the Olympics in Dressage. 18 yr old Jenn wanted to be a successful horse trainer, ride horses all day, win the Congress reining and go to the Olympics in Dressage. Dreams change. They modify with life and experiences and path changes. It never makes me feel like a failure, more like finding the next path. On the next adventure.
48 yr old Jenn Dreams of LESS. Less business. Less hectic. Less responsibility. Less stress.
And also MORE . More time for relationships with family, friends and that special someone. More time to BUILD relationships with my horses . Remember 17 yr old Jenn ?! She spent so much TIME with her horses. More freedom to enjoy life. More time for peace at my farm.
And yes....I do dream of riding my reiner , and my dressage horses for a good pattern . Their names are Lemynade, Qrush On Me and Royalty In Me . And maybe a blue or two too.
Dreams are in motion. I'm placing the foundations for them now. How about you ?
Breeder Update #2
Lieutenant by Louisville HTF ( Lord Leatherdale x Negro x Fruhling) out of Ravi Sutra ( Rousseau x Riverman x Davignon x Garibaldi) . Lt Dan is 3 yrs old and this is his 10th ride under saddle.
He is owned and trained by Sarah Fulton Smith
Can you say " Born On The Bit " ?!?!
Lt Dan has 2 full Siblings - Liberated ( Shrimpin) , who is 2 , and Legitimate ( Jenneigh) , is a yearling and just went to her new home in Ohio !
Breeder Update
Here are some FUN videos of horses I have bred. Nothing gets a breeder more excited than new video of horses we poured our heart and soul into !
Both of these horses are out of my Broodmare Ravi Sutra ( Rousseau x Riverman x Davignon x Garibaldi) . She has been a stellar producer for me over the years. This year she foaled her last one and is now retired.
Finiver is by Finery ( Furstenball) and is ridden/ trained by Diana Snyder and owned by Diana and Deirdre Reilly
So share some of my excitement and joy in checking out these beautiful "kids ". Im so proud of them ! ( it will only let me post 1 video at a time so....I'll post the next one ..)
I Love Good Lunging
All training is a work in progress. When you see a horse that lunges well ( balanced in all 3 gaits, responsive to aids, connected to bit, relaxed not forced ) you know that someone spent time training thay horse.
Lunging is an excellent and essential skill. How does a vet evaluate lameness ? On the straight and on the lunge
It is where I introduce contact to the bit.
It is an excellent way to learn to see the rhythm and tempo of the horse. Try to match your steps with the rhythm of the horse ( i call this the walk song, trot some and canter song . They play in my mind the entire time I work a horse ). Your aids should be applied and removed in this same rhythm !
For instance....trot is 1, 2 , 1 , 2. Aids are on, off, on , off or on, on, off , off, on , on, off , off. Or on/ off, on/ off , on / off . Most people hold aids on too long and don't ever release. The release is where the horse changes.
I'll repeat that.
The release is where the horse changes.
Here Katie is asking her horse to connect to the outside sidereal by yielding his ribcage and engaging inside hind leg. This is her first time doing this specific exercise. Listen along .
Warning : always have a professional start your horse in side reins, even extremely loose ones. Never attempt it on your own.
And yes, holding the line is a skill. Katie fixed her loops to a safer size .
Not Bad for a Butt High Yearling
Yearlings are so awkward. As breeders we say "hide them behind the barn " because they are often sorta skinny, all leg, no body, the neck disappears, their head looks big and so forth.
Here is last year's foal Legitimate...and she is awkward....but she can still move ! And is as pretty as ever. She will look so different in a year !
Introducing Lemynade
Lemynade is a April 1st 2024 colt by QH stallion Volturi out of QH pedigree Jynjer ( Open For Suggestion x My Town) . He is a red roan and very strong and opinionated.
They came home today. Jyn is a first time mom and she is doing well....except she is very protective. Charges and bites. So no visitors at this time.
Both are doing great. Lemynade will be a personal horse for Jenn.
Broodmare Check In #2
Ravi Sutra is 19 yrs old this year. Time flies. I believe I got her when she was 5 yrs old. I did ride her a bit. She is sensative and extremely light.
She has had many foals for me and this 2024 foal will be her last. You can see the big scar on her left side neck . We had to give her hormone shots last year twice a month to keep the pregnancy . She had reactions to them. Each month was a bit different. The last shot she had barely any swelling. The next to last shot her neck was swollen into her crest and a chunk of her neck actually sloughed off. That was with banamine and surpass !
She has earned retirement. So this is the final foal. You can see she is in great shape. Her legs are still strong and correct . She gets very very large when pregnant. She is due May 29th 2024 and usually foals within a few days of that date. I will be foaling her at home.
Ravi is by the great Rousseau . She is out of Revien, who lived here for 10 years. Revien was by Riverman and out of Daniella ( Davignon x Garibaldi) .
Ravi is in foal to the young Hilltop Farm stallion Denmark ( Desperado x Negro x Fruhling) . Foal is available. In utero pricing at a great discount.
Broodmare Check In
This is my maiden mare Jynjer ( Open For Suggestion x My Town ) , an appendix Quarter Horse mare. She is due April 16th 2024 and is in foal to the reining bred stallion Volturi.
Jynjer is an exceptionally good minded mare, standing 15.2 hands. She is a lovely all around athletic type. I'm looking forward to this cross as a personal horse.
Equine Thumb Wrestling with Rooster ( he loves to play )
Long Lining, Lessons, Mules with Floppy Ears
Here is a bad video of Maggie Mule. I went 1 handed and she wasn't happy about it. Ha ha. I wanted to try to capture her ears flopping. She is such a wonderful creature.
I have been very busy. I have missed posting about a bunch of clinics. Friday I spent in Schuylkill Haven at Dandelion Farm with the most delightful people. I did some lessons, some half and half and some Long Lining. All were fun. I enjoyed every minute.. even with the loudest cat ever who talks over all the people... making comments. š¤£š¤£
The Thoroughbred mare. I cannot pick up my whip with her....I was able to leg yield using my body position and wow....what relief for her ! Big breakthrough.
I love teaching the seat and watching the horse get relief, clarity and understanding when the rider is inside the motion of the horse. The lightest seat is integrated into the horse.
Sunday I was at Aviva's in Bowie Md. Lovely horses. All good improvements. Good questions . And my favorite Mule.
Fancy Boy !
He is just so special. Liberated ( aka Shrimpin ) is at the end of his yearling year. He is 15.1 and a half at withers and nearly 15.3 at his rump. He is just the cutest sweetest boy. " Shrimpin" is by Louisville HTF ( who he looks just like ) and out of my super mare Ravi Sutra ( Rousseau x Riverman x Davignon) . He is a German Oldenburg.
And just like all of Ravi's kids....he loves to flag his tail. ā¤
Long Lining Clips
Some fun horses I have worked with yesterday and today. All ages and breeds
Of course in these videos I am LL one handed....so not keeping the octagon or diamond shape I usually do...but the result of doing straight, turn, straight , turn is here.
You can see that the horses are connected to the outside rein. The inside rein is PASSIVE. It is not used to force roundness or produce a frame. It is just the weight of the lines, letting the horse seek the contact over an elastic topline. * edited to say....it won't let me add more than 1 video... so I will post several on Instagram)
Grey horse is Zack at the lovely Daisy Lane Farm in Woodbine Md. I have LL Zack for several years and today he was just plain outstanding. I even turned him some in the canter ( like quarter working canter pirouette) . He has a history of being a very emotional horse and not very consistent. To see him this relaxed was so delightful.
Grab Strap
Last Thursday I went to Dressage at Devon and very much enjoyed the positive and encouraging teaching of C. Dufour in the Masterclass. She has such simple, clear exercises . When she taught Boyd M. , she ran out and put a grab strap on his saddle and had him use it to sit the trot. Now Mr. Martin was not bouncing, but the horsewasnt really letting him sit into the stride...so using the grab strap to pull the rider deep into the seat for a fully connected, adhesive seat . It was super effective and the horse got calm and on the aids in a whole different way.
So I combined this with a little jumping exercise last night for Toyah and Legs. Legs often tightens her back and doesn't allow the rider to sit in. She has done this forever. It especially happens after the jump...so we used the grab strap so Toyah could sit even when the horse doesn't let her. It worked of course. Legs got calmer, more focused and more relaxed through the back.
Here Is Your Reminder !
All of us, horse people, are out in the sun a lot. Some of us wear hats, use sun block etc. Some don't. Either way....we can't block it all ( but thank goodness we have sun shirts available now ) .
Do yourself a favor. Get your skin checked. Yes. Just do it. It isnt that big of a deal to have them freeze some spots.it is a big deal when they have to do surgery on your face.
Yup. I just had spots on my face frozen again. I think this is my 6th round.
Just do it. Keep preventing as much as you can and still....get checked.
( Batwing can soak up all the sun he wants ! Fur coats make great sun protection. )
Devon Musical š¶
Beautiful night for the Musical Freestyle at Dressage at Devon. Loved hanging out with my Besties, Jen , and Derik and his significant other. Friends + horses +creativity = inspiration.
Michael's partnership with Qredit Hilltop.was so tangible. I have been working with Hilltop farm in my breeding program for a decade now ! I have had 2 offspring of Qredit : Qrush On Me and Qredentials.
Topline and What is Normal
I have heard this story over and over throughout my career. "My trainer / barn manager says my horses topline looks bad because I don't ride enough"
Complete baloney.
Horses who are healthy and fed well have good toplines. If your horse doesn't have a good topline or you see some change happening that isn't for the good....call your vet .
Simple as that.
Call your vet.
Ask about : Kissing Spine, Metabolic Change, Vitamin E deficiency, cushings, lyme amongst other things. Pain can also be a cause. Have you ever seen a horse that looks normal in the front half of its body and emaciated in the back half ? Pain !
You can dump tons of feed into these guys. Nothing changes.
Call your vet today !
Sound on for a little description of one of my horses. Be diligent. Know your horse and call your vet.
Parents / Connections/ Spirit
Yesterday I came up the driveway to my mom feeding grass to Ravi and Jenneigh.ā¤
My parents help me a lot around the farm.
A lot.
My dad grew up on a dairy farm and my mom grew up loving cats. Both from Rural Adams County PA ( hint....near Gettysburg) . They arent horse people. My mom loves plants , gardening, sunshine. My dad was a carpenter and can fix most things....I am sure he is beyond sick of it (" Hans broke a brand new board. Brand new !" ) but they still come help me.
My mom has always been timid around big animals....dogs on up. But last year and this year I see her petting the foals " Shrimpin " and "Jenneigh ".
It got me thinking about connections. What draws us to that particular animal / horse? I'm sure you know....sometimes you just meet it and feel like, yes, that belongs with me. Some I have grown to love , like my heart horse Autumn Charm ....and others there was an immediate connection, like Coromino. Is it the way we look that binds us ? Or maybe our Spirit ( Mind, Body, Spirit ) ? We have to feed our Spirit, and I do think horses do that for us. And then the horse, it has it's own Spirit. Life force. Identity. Individualism. Character.
So fascinating....the feeding of your Spirit. I have a friend who loved the beach. She always said she felt calm there. She finally moved there and I can feel the Spiritual happiness in her posts.
I also find it magical, spirit feeding if you will, when an animal chooses you. What makes that feral kitten , 1 in the group, friendly ?
Feeding the Spirit...it helps the Mind and the Body to stay united. How do you feed yours?
The Farm, Young Horses, Summer
Seems like a long hot summer to me. South central Pennsylvania is humid...so you sweat a lot. Spending 10 to 15 hrs out in it a day takes it's toll. I'm ready for sweatshirts !
We could use some rain once again. The fields are getting dry and the weeds are thriving.
My young horses are growing up. They get lots of outside time. My broodmare Ravi and her foal Jenneigh spend 99% of their time outside. It is the best way to grow healthy legs, joints, tendons etc. New pics of Jenneigh coming soon. Her movement caught up with her looks right at the 3 month mark. She is spectacular.
My yearling Liberated ( Shrimpin) might be bigger than my 2 yr old Royalty In Me ( Sploot). They are both lovely and resemble their sires.
I will be taking Sploot and my client Stacey's Coromino son Cantankerous 336 to Dressage at Devon in a month. My favorite show. Can not wait.
Busy Weekend
Saturday I went to Aviva Nebesky's Horse Pen Hill Farm in Bowie Md. It was a hot hot and very humid day with good horses. I really challenged some of the horses I have worked with longer . I asked them for a bit more difficult work and they rose to meet it. I saw improvement in several thoroughbreds
Today Kelly M. attended IEO dressage show and had 2 successful training level rides scoring 63%. Great job.
Today I hauled Toyah and Calamari ( Coromino x Amari x Silver Buck ) to Tranquility Manor Farm in Manor Md. They did the 2 ft 6 jumpers. We have been working hard on improving Legs canter both in suspension and ground cover. I could really see a difference today. Legs was more adjustable, made the distances easier and was more drawn to the jumps. Legs can be quite sticky , so Toyah concentrated less on leads and the stuckness and more on riding each stride, maintaining a consistent stride and so forth.
Toyah is working on being more patient, using ALL of her aids and trusting the horse , the training. It is all coming together.
