Honey had her first ride in our program today 🙌

We always walk, trot and lope on the first ride and then adjust what is needed for each and every c**t.

A hot c**t? We will end on lots of walking and loving.

A cold/lazy c**t? We will end on moving forward in a trot happily without resistance.

Honey handled today great and it’s all progress from here 💪

Well……. SURPRISE 🫏🥳

Look who has made their arrival at Topwind Ranch 💕

Absolutely adorable and we got to watch the whole birth, it was so special to be apart of it!

No one guessed Evette would foal today, but I’m still going to give a Topwind Shirt to the closest guess.

Congrats Rosi Schofield on being the winner!! 🎉 👕

Our Program, and what makes it unique 🌟

Topwind Ranch has started many c**ts over the years(I wish this number was tracked sometimes), worked with a wide variety of breeds/ages/disciplines and we have developed a program that we believe will benefit your horse for life.

Here are some of the things we offer in our program, and we feel are unique to our program ⬇️

🌟Multiple Riders: When you send your horse to training, when you pick it up you hope to be able to ride it. We get a jump start on the adjustment by having multiple capable riders on it during training. Especially for a young horse, having different saddles, and different riders help them get used to different feels right away.

🌟 Variety: We focus our training program based on your goals but we also always provide variety for your horse. All our horses see the roping sled, the cutting flag, trail rides, obstacle courses, dirt roads, arena work, flags, they ride with others, they ride out alone, and we continue to add to our program all the time.

🌟 Hauling: We haul off site to show our horses new trails, new arenas, and new environments. When available we haul to ranch shows, practices, clinics and roping jackpots.

🌟 Chaos: May seem silly, but when it comes to training horses and making solid citizens - providing chaos, and teaching your horse how to handle it is SO beneficial. We teach them how to think, stay calm, and handle an environment that isn’t quiet, or boxed in.

🌟 Care: We truly care about every horse that enters our program. We aim to have every horse that leaves our property looking and feeling better than when they arrived. Clean barns, quality equipment, and a solid feed program.

🌟 Visibility: We are very active on social media and post photos / videos daily. I post lots of day by day clips on our stories and I try to show every horse at least every few days. I never want anyone to worry about their horse while it’s at training and if the social media glimpses aren’t enough - call me. I’ll give you a private update & grab more photos/videos for you.

We love what we do - wouldn’t have it any other way♥️

No doubt Mario can make a rope horse if you wanted him too 🔥👌

He’s been started lightly on the roping sled and is happy to do the job. No fear of a rope, and plenty of work ethic.

He currently stands 14.2/14.3H and measures to finish at a solid 15h 📏 He’s a 2022 AQHA Red Roan Gelding located in Wynnewood OK.

We hauled out to an indoor arena, we did a dirt road riding day, we hauled out to the trails, we roped the sled, we brought Sassy to her new owner 🫶🏻, we got in 4 new c**ts to start AND we are completely restocked on Southern Star Feeds alfalfa cubes 👏

What a week 😅 Happy Friday Yall!!

Soaked up a beautiful day out on the trails ☀️

It was a pretty combination of snowy woods and dry open spaces. Water was running and it just had such a pretty, crisp feel ❄️🍂

We took a group of 3 year olds and they all got saddled up cold and rode right out like broke horses - so proud of them! 👏 🐎

TIP TUESDAY; Bringing out the BEST in your horse 💁🏼‍♀️

Every horse that has come through my program I can find something I like about them. Even horses that don’t match my style, or are not strong in the disciplines I prefer to ride & compete in.

It’s because I meet them where they are at, and bring out THEIR best. Which doesn’t always mean exactly what I want.

If you try to cram a square peg through a round hole not only will you end up frustrated but if you keep trying you’ll end up with a really damaged unusable square peg.

So bring out the best in your horse by capitalizing on their strengths, growing their weaknesses and allowing them to be successful at their strongsuits.

🟪 When shopping for a horse blanket: 🟪

❄️ Learn how to properly measure your horse for a correct size. Here is a video example on how to get your horses blanket measurement.

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8be6tGV/

❄️ Pay attention to the style of clips on the blanket, when it’s cold and your fingers aren’t fully functional you’ll thank me for having good clips! I prefer the claw style clips. They are so much easier, and don’t break as easily like the “swivel snap” style.

❄️ This is a personal choice but I love blankets with belly bands! I think they get a nicer fit on the horse, keep them warmer & keep their belly’s clean!

❄️ Turnout Vs Stable Blankets

Make sure to read the description of the blanket. Turnout blankets should be waterproof and able to keep your horse warm and dry in rain or snowy conditions. Stable blankets will not be waterproof and are more suited for horses inside the stable for warmth.

Tip Tuesday: it’s NOT about the obstacle 👌

When working with your horse and going on, over, around or through new obstacles I want you to remember it’s not just about the obstacle.

It’s about the state of mind, the thinking process and the leadership you’re providing that your horse needs to be following. THAT is what I want you to focus on in your next obstacle session.

Often I see people fighting with their horses and then the horse runs over the obstacle, almost taking out the handler in the process and their quit the session there saying “good job” you went on the obstacle! 🙈

When you end here your horses mind isn’t in the right place and they won’t be any better next time you approach the obstacle they may even be worse!

When I am working with a horse who wants to refuse an obstacle I focus my whole session on getting them to follow my leadership, approach the obstacle with their thinking brain, and TRY. I reward every try - a step towards the obstacle, dropping the nose to investigate the obstacle, even looking at me for reassurance. I do not reward trying to run off, pulling, ignoring me or any other silliness.

Once we slowly step on, one foot at a time if needed, are calm and wait - they get to stand on it and rest, then we are done 👏

It can be a longer process but when you get success with this in mind, the next time you approach it - they will know exactly what to do 💪

Here is some Monday Motivation for you 😱🤩

Annie Oakley as a 2yr old first entering our program to NOW.
Granted she is pregnant and her belly is alittle larger for that reason 😉

Look at this GLOW UP! Getting your young horse on a good feed program, correct exercise and regular grooming makes the biggest difference.

Remember those babies are growing and maturing and won’t even look like a mature horse until about 5 years old.

So get out there and work with your horse so they can be the best they can be 👏

Thanks Southern Star Feeds for the alfalfa needed to make this transformation happen 🌱

As soon as Annie isn’t pregnant she will also start Smart Earth Camelina - USA Camelina Oil ✨
