This 3yr old Filly is absolutely stunning, built, quiet, broke & ready for her human 🙌

Tip Tuesday: it’s NOT about the obstacle 👌

When working with your horse and going on, over, around or through new obstacles I want you to remember it’s not just about the obstacle.

It’s about the state of mind, the thinking process and the leadership you’re providing that your horse needs to be following. THAT is what I want you to focus on in your next obstacle session.

Often I see people fighting with their horses and then the horse runs over the obstacle, almost taking out the handler in the process and their quit the session there saying “good job” you went on the obstacle! 🙈

When you end here your horses mind isn’t in the right place and they won’t be any better next time you approach the obstacle they may even be worse!

When I am working with a horse who wants to refuse an obstacle I focus my whole session on getting them to follow my leadership, approach the obstacle with their thinking brain, and TRY. I reward every try - a step towards the obstacle, dropping the nose to investigate the obstacle, even looking at me for reassurance. I do not reward trying to run off, pulling, ignoring me or any other silliness.

Once we slowly step on, one foot at a time if needed, are calm and wait - they get to stand on it and rest, then we are done 👏

It can be a longer process but when you get success with this in mind, the next time you approach it - they will know exactly what to do 💪

Here is some Monday Motivation for you 😱🤩

Annie Oakley as a 2yr old first entering our program to NOW.
Granted she is pregnant and her belly is alittle larger for that reason 😉

Look at this GLOW UP! Getting your young horse on a good feed program, correct exercise and regular grooming makes the biggest difference.

Remember those babies are growing and maturing and won’t even look like a mature horse until about 5 years old.

So get out there and work with your horse so they can be the best they can be 👏

We started this filly right here at Topwind Ranch spring 2024 - life changes happen and she’s available to a great home.🏡

She has all the basics in the arena, she rides outside confidently, loves trails, and is currently working on getting started on the roping sled. Shes gotten so THICK, and she is one that will catch eyes wherever you go.

Tip Tuesday: Introduce your horse to Hobbles! 🙌

Hobbles are such a great tool and knowing what they are is definitely an asset in your horses toolbox of life skills 👌

Here are a few tips to make sure hobbling goes smoothly the first time (and if you’ve never done it before ask a pro for some help!)

1️⃣ Make sure your horse knows how to pick up and give his feet to you when you ask before hobbling

2️⃣ Do the first hobbling in a nice sandy arena (NOT in the barn, a tight space or on a slick surface)

3️⃣ Use a lunge line so you can give your horse space but still help and provide guidance as they figure them out

4️⃣ Don’t panic! If you are calm your horse will usually stay calm too. Talk to them but make sure to keep a safe distance.

Hobbling is such a great life skill, and I always enjoy watching horses process them on.

Tip Tuesday - Haul Your Horse! 🎄

Even though sometimes it’s extra work, sometimes it’s embarrassing, and sometimes you’d rather just take the broke one and leave the greenie at home - haul your horse!

They don’t see the world and become well behaved in public unless you show it to them MANY times.

Take them with and just tie them up to watch - no expectations just experience. I always try to do this a few times before I even ride them out and an about.
Sets us up for alittle more success 🙌

So as we head into the new year, make it a goal.
Get those horses out and about as much as possible ✅

10 SIMPLE Horse Care Tips all Horses Need to be their BEST

1. Forage First - your horses main diet should consist of forage. Pasture Grass, Round Bales, Grass Hay, Alfalfa Hay, Hay Pellets, Alfalfa Cubes are all some options to meet this requirement.

2. Water - horses need access to water 100% of the time. A pond is not adequate for a horse. Provide them clean water.

3. Salt / Mineral - horses especially ones in work need access to salt and mineral. Salt Blocks are usually not enough for horses in work as they cannot consume enough by licking to meet their needs. I love blocks and licks for activity but also provide loose salt.

4. Grooming - If you want your horses coat and body condition to be beautiful you need to groom them. Grooming puts hand on them to check for skin issues or injuries and helps shine the coat. Detangling manes & tails will reduce breakage.

5. Shelter - Every horse needs adequate shelter provided to get out of the elements. This can look different depending on location and needs but trees to block wind, lean to 2/3 sided, stalls, shade sails for hot sun are all options to consider.

6. Turnout - Your horse needs to be able to play, run and move about. Turnout can look different depending on what’s available but pastures, paddocks, turnout pens are all options.

7. Exercise - having your horse on a regular exercise schedule will keep them fit, healthy, and looking & feeling their very best!

8. Quality Tack - your horses can’t feel their best if they are not being ridden or worked with quality tack. This doesn’t mean you need to buy the most expensive items! It just means you provide quality items that won’t pinch, rub, poke, or cause discomfort in any way to your horse.

9. Company - horses are social animals and do best with company. Having your horses with other equines will keep them happy! If you only have one horse - you could get a donkey or pony for adequate company at a smaller cost.

10. Happy Humans - your horses needs and happiness can’t be met if their humans aren’t taken care of first.
So take care of yourself and provide what you can to keep your horses feeling their BEST!

Spotlighting Luigi today in our lineup of sale horses 👏🔥

It was a big day for our 14h bay gelding, he got his first dental float done! 🦷

I’m happy he did - he had so many caps needing help coming off and his mouth was not balanced and probably uncomfortable. I bet we feel a difference after a few days and he continues to progress exponentially in his training now 👍🏼

2022 AQHA bay gelding, currently 14h and measures to finish at 14.2h - he will be a stout guy, and he’s got plenty of go to get a job done ✔️
