Almost time to celebrate the New Year! Here are some tips for keeping your pets safe during your celebration!

1. Secure a Safe Space: Provide a quiet, escape-proof area in your home where your pet can feel safe and relaxed.
Use familiar bedding, toys, or items with your scent to comfort them.
2. Minimize Noise Exposure: Keep pets indoors to reduce exposure to fireworks and loud noises. Play calming music or turn on the TV to drown out external noise. Consider white noise machines for added sound masking.
3. ID and Microchip Information: Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with updated ID tags. Verify that their microchip information is current in case they escape.
4. Calming Products: Use anxiety-reducing aids like pheromone diffusers, calming collars, or vet-recommended supplements. For highly anxious pets, consult your vet about temporary anti-anxiety medications.
5. Avoid Party Hazards: Keep alcohol, chocolate, and party foods out of reach, as these can be toxic to pets. Watch for decorations or party favors that could be swallowed, like confetti or balloons.
6. Secure Doors and Gates: With guests coming and going, ensure doors and gates remain closed to prevent accidental escapes. Consider using baby gates to block off certain areas.
7. Exercise Beforehand: Take your pet for a walk or engage in playtime earlier in the day to tire them out and reduce anxiety.
8. Monitor Fireworks Safety: Keep pets away from areas where fireworks are being set off. Ensure all windows and curtains are closed to block out flashes of light.
9. Avoid Crowds: If attending outdoor celebrations, leave your pet at home. Crowds, loud noises, and unfamiliar environments can be overwhelming and dangerous.
10. Stay Calm Yourself: Pets often mirror your emotions. Stay calm and reassuring to help them feel secure.

As the temperature drops, it’s important to keep our furry friends safe and warm, so Dogtor Draco is here to share some tips!

❄️ Bundle Up for Walks: Short-haired breeds and senior pets may need a cozy sweater or jacket to stay warm. Limit outdoor time during extreme cold.
❄️ Check Those Paws: Salt, ice, and snow can harm paw pads. Rinse and dry paws after walks, and consider pet-safe booties.
❄️ Keep your cats cozy: Cats can quickly succumb to hypothermia if left outside. Provide a warm, safe space for your feline friends.
❄️ Watch for Signs of Cold Stress: Shivering, whining, or slowing down are signs your pet may be too cold. Bring them inside immediately.
❄️ Check Under the Hood: Cats and small animals often seek warmth near car engines. Tap the hood before starting your vehicle.
❄️ Avoid Toxic Chemicals: Antifreeze is dangerous to pets. Clean up spills promptly and store it out of reach.
❄️ Keep Them Hydrated: Cold air can dehydrate pets. Ensure fresh, unfrozen water is always available.

Stay cozy and safe this winter! Share your favorite winter pet pics with us in the comments.

🐾 Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips 🦃

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and delicious food—but don’t forget about your furry companions! 🐶🐱 While you enjoy the holiday festivities, here are some tips to keep your pets safe and happy:

1. Watch the Food Table
No table scraps! Rich or fatty foods like turkey skin, gravy, or stuffing can upset your pet’s stomach or cause pancreatitis.
Avoid bones. Cooked turkey bones can splinter and cause choking or digestive blockages.

2. Keep Toxic Foods Out of Reach
Dangerous for pets: Onions, garlic, raisins, grapes, chocolate, and anything sweetened with xylitol.
Safe treats: Plain turkey (no seasoning), small pieces of steamed vegetables like carrots or green beans.

3. Be Cautious with Decorations
Curious pets might chew on candles, plants, or table decor. Keep an eye out for small objects that could be choking hazards.

4. Guests and Door Safety
If you’re hosting, ensure your pets have a quiet, secure space away from the crowd. This helps reduce stress and prevents escape attempts when doors open.

5. Watch for Trash Diving
Dispose of food scraps and bones securely. Curious pets might dig through the trash for leftovers, which can lead to serious health issues.

6. Emergency Vet Info
We are closed on Thanksgiving, but will continue normal business hours on Friday! We recommend Animal Emergency Hospital that has a location in both Byron Center and Grand Rapids.

Remember, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your pets have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

11/15/2024

Rabies is a deadly disease that can affect animals and humans alike, and we’re already seeing it close to home! Michigan has reported 46 positive rabies cases in bats in 2024 alone. This is a crucial reminder of the importance of rabies vaccinations—not just for outdoor pets, but also for pets who live strictly indoors. Here’s why rabies protection matters for everyone:

1. Indoor Pets Are Still at Risk.
Many people think that indoor pets are safe from rabies, but wildlife like bats (the primary rabies carrier in Michigan) can sometimes make their way inside through tiny openings. If a bat were to come in and make contact with an unvaccinated pet, the consequences could be life-threatening.

2. Outdoor & Indoor/Outdoor Pets Face Greater Exposure.
Outdoor pets and those with an indoor/outdoor lifestyle are especially vulnerable, as they’re more likely to encounter potentially rabid animals like bats, raccoons, and skunks. Vaccinating your pets helps build a protective barrier that reduces their risk—and by extension, protects you and your family from exposure as well.

3. Rabies Is Fatal, But It’s Preventable.
There is no cure for rabies once symptoms appear, which is why prevention through vaccination is critical. In Michigan, keeping pets up to date on rabies vaccinations is not just a recommendation, it’s also a legal requirement to ensure public health.

By vaccinating your pets, you’re helping keep our community safe and protecting everyone from a fatal virus. Don’t wait until it’s too late—call us today to schedule your pet’s rabies vaccination and keep them safe for years to come.

Meet Chloe! Chloe has been an essential part of our Client Care team for the past 7 years! Her journey began with internships and jobs at local nature centers and the zoo, working within their educational departments. There, she discovered her passion for sharing knowledge and connecting with both children and adults. When Chloe moved to Grand Rapids, she found Animal Medical Center and fell in love with the level of care, our mission, and Dr. Cavanagh’s passion for her work—and she’s been with us ever since!

When asked why she continues to work in this field, Chloe shared several reasons, with her top being the supportive and knowledgeable team she considers family. Another reason is her bond with clients and their beloved pets. Some of her most meaningful memories are helping clients through the difficult moments of saying goodbye to their pets. After losing both of her own dogs in a short time, Chloe understands the weight of grief and feels honored to guide and support clients during those times.

Chloe strives to keep learning every day and wants to show her twin daughters what it means to be passionate and hardworking. She is also a devoted pet mom to Wally (who loves lounging on his cheese slice) and Cedar, with her striking green eyes.

Thank you, Chloe, for your kindness, dedication, and for being a comforting presence to our clients and their pets! 🐾💙
