UPDATE: Adopted!
How are these guys still available?!
Four year old Quinn arrived at the shelter as a stray with his brother, and sadly, he was never reclaimed. But this sweet Bernedoodle is ready to start a new chapter with a loving family! He’s full of energy and loves to explore, whether it's going for walks or sniffing around the yard. Though he's an adventurous spirit, Quinn also thinks he's a lap dog and loves to curl up for snuggles after a day of fun. He's smart, already knows "sit," and is gentle when taking treats. If you're looking for a sweet, playful companion who's ready to be your new best friend, Quinn could be the perfect match!
Good With Cats: unknown
Good With Dogs: Unknown (he did come in with his brother they don't seem to get along now at the shelter)
Good With Kids: likely, he really loved the few that he's met here at the shelter

How are these guys still available?!
Four year old Dex is a gentle and affectionate Bernedoodle who was found as a stray with his brother, and sadly, never reclaimed. He is a gentle boy, who is not too boysterous unless you are taking him for a walk, then he gets really excited. Dex knows lots of stuff like sit, and how to take treats gently. There's nothing he loves more than getting to snuggle up with people. He'd be a lapdog in a home and a big cuddler in bed we think. (Dex is used as the training dog when new volunteers are getting orientated because of his great demeanor.)

Meet this 2 year old sweetheart - Smokey:
How I Arrived At NHS: I lived in a loving home, but the dog in the home really didn't like me so, I was brought to NHS to find my forever home.
I am a very friendly boy that loves getting lots of attention and pets. I also love getting belly rubs. I am a very snuggly boy and love to sleep on the bed with you.
Note from NHS staff: Smokey just got moved to the adoption floor yesterday and all day long, the volunteers and staff would come to visit him and give him hugs. He's a great cat and whoever adopts him is going to be very lucky!
Good With Kids: Likely. I have been around kids and did well. We do recommend a slow introduction
Good With Cats: Possibly. I have been around other cats and did well. We do recommend a slow introduction.
Good With Dogs: Possibly. I don't seem to mind the dogs I have been around. We do recommend a slow introduction.

UPDATE: We have quite a few applications so we are good now - thank you!
PLEASE SHARE: Northwoods is looking for a foster for 8 year old Bowzer!
Bowzer has been at the shelter for a month now and is scheduled for a specialized ear surgery which will be sometime in early February. We would love for him to be able to be comfortable in a home while he waits for surgery and then recovery afterwards. The commitment would be approximately 3-4 weeks, possibly?
His past owner describes him as very friendly, good with kids aged 5 to teens. He will chew on things if not getting enough attention. He loves to be cuddled at sleep time (or really anytime). We don't know how he does with other dogs but is afraid of cats, will run from them.
We will supply the food or anything else that he needs. You will just need to be able to transport him to/from the vets office plus Northwoods when he needs rechecks.
If you can offer Bowzer a temporary home, please send in an application at www.northwoodshs.org/how-to-adopt-foster/
Thank you for considering!
If you are interested and can help.
UPDATE: Adopted!
Meet 1 1/2 year old Leonardo DiCatrio:
Leonardo was a transfer from animal control. He is a very sweet and smart boy who is patiently waiting for his new home. He's got a great personality and loves to hang out with you in the cat colony room. He's chatty at times when he wants to tell you something, like his dislike at being in a carrier. He is inquisitive and loves toys, can usually figure them out pretty quickly. He's also a big fan of catnip! He will be a wonderful companion!
Good With Kids: likely with a proper introduction
Good With Cats: yes but we do recommend a slow introduction
Good With Dogs: Unknown but likely with a slow introduction

UPDATE: Adopted!
One of our wonderful volunteers took 1 year old Iggy on an outing to Petco where she got to pick out her new toy!
Iggy originally came in as a stray 2 months ago and has been adopted and returned twice.
The first time was due to her getting into a fight with the resident dog over food when she entered his kennel. (She also chased the chickens and guinea fowl, so she shouldn't go to a farm.) She was adopted a second time but was returned because the adopter had allergies.
Notes from NHS volunteer who recently took her on an outing: Today we got to take Iggy on an outing and she is a little ray of sunshine! She's a stray and I would love to know her story because she's fearless, on the extreme end of affection, seems to love everyone and especially children, and knows how to ride in crates and cars very well.
Her three favorite activities were getting kisses on the face, giving kisses with lots of snorting, and being carried around by our 9 year old! She's really into the full body contact because it gives her easier access for hugs and kisses! She did great with showing off her sitting skills and at the park, she wanted to spend the whole time on everyone's laps getting affection - so cute because she's a bit too large for laps but she's determined to make it work. She's 100% trusting of everyone and is so fun to be around because she's so happy and affectionate! If you love snuggly affectionate dogs that love to kiss so much that they snort in anticipation, Iggy is your dream come true! I love the little sweetheart and her kissable jowls!
Good With Kids: Yes.
Good With Cats: We recommend a home with no cats.
Good With Dogs: Possibly. We recommend a slow introduction. There was an incident with a resident dog when Iggy was adopted and brought back, because something happened over food in a kennel and they ended up getting in a fight. When tested with other dogs and food here at the shelter she was just fine with the other dog, but we recom
Meet 3 month old Bert and Ernie - a bonded pair that need to get adopted together!
Notes from my foster mom: Bert and Ernie are sweet orange brothers who are best friends. They are very affectionate and loving and want all the attention they can get. They aren’t scared of people, but are nervous in new places, so they will need a few days to adjust to their new home. The first day they came to stay with me they hid out in their kennel but would still purr and rub their faces against my hand when I would pet them. After a few days they were no longer hiding and would run up to see me as soon as they heard my voice and would flop over onto their backs with their bellies up at my feet to get me to stop and pet them. Now they literally can’t get enough attention and want nothing more than to be near me. They are fine with me picking them up and like to lay in my lap. Ernie is a bit braver in new situations and Bert will look to his brother to give him confidence. Once Bert is comfortable, though, he is the sweetest, calmest, most cuddly kitten and will lay in my lap for hours. They love to play with each other and love when I bring out their wand toy to chase. Their relationship is so sweet to watch- they do everything together. They sleep curled up together, groom each other, and when one goes to eat the other will follow and eat too.
I started out for the first few days keeping them confined to one quiet room with all hiding spots blocked off except for their kennel where they could hide out in to feel safe but still be accessible for me to pet them, and this worked out well. I would recommend this type of introduction at their new home as well until they get used to their new environment and the sounds and people there. Once they are comfortable in their new home these two will be the most loving companions!
Good With Kids: likely with a slow introduction, might be more nervous around smaller children
Good With Cats: yes
Good With Dogs: likely with a slow i
Update: Henry has been adopted!
Meet 10 year old Henry (currently in foster):
How I Arrived At NHS: I was found tied to a stop sign, and thankfully a nice man untied me and brought me to the shelter. I had some health issues so I went into a loving foster home.
Notes from my foster mom: Allow me to introduce you to Henry, a nine-year-young Chihuahua/Papillon mix with a personality that far exceeds his size. With red and cream markings, Henry is a cross between a red panda and a desert fox.
Despite his age, Henry still enjoys life's finer things. For a small dog, he can leap into my truck (with the help of running boards) and defy gravity with his jumps into our laps. He loves zoomies and teases you to chase him. In the truck, he prefers to be in the driver's seat, perched on your lap, and gazing out the window with wonder in his eyes.
Henry might not be toy-obsessed, but he adores his plush dog bed and fuzzy blankets. He's house-trained and gets right to business when we go outside.
As his foster, I can vouch for Henry’s friendliness to my three NHS Adopted Alumni Canines. My grandson's pets—a cat named Ripples and a Pitbull named Bailey—visit often for the weekends, and Henry can't contain his excitement over the cat (finally someone his size!) Ripples tolerates his curiosity before retreating to her sanctuary.
Henry has undergone dental work and is fully recovered. He's a champ at taking his medicine twice daily, thanks to love and treats. His tongue often sticks out due to tooth loss, adding to his charm. He eats hard and soft food. Despite almost total deafness, Henry doesn't miss a thing. He relies on floor vibrations, moving air, door noises, and changes in lighting or shadows. But be warned, I think he can read lips! Henry tries to keep up with my hounds zooming around the yard, and he thinks he could, with longer legs.
Henry, on occasion, comes to work with me, greeting customers and soaking up employee affection. He's very curious about children and
UPDATE: Adopted - thank you everyone for sharing!!
Four month old Nutmeg has been waiting a month now to find her new home and that's a long time for any dog, especially a puppy. One of our great volunteer dog walkers was giving her some extra attention and playing "hide the treat" to keep her mentally happy. Please share with anyone you know who might be a good fit, let's get her adopted!
Notes from NHS volunteer: How is sweet little Nutmeg still at the shelter? She is an almost 4 month old shepherd mix that came to us with her brother, who got adopted. During our puppy caregiver sessions, Nutmeg really enjoys food puzzles, I put my hand all around the puzzle and she doesn’t show any signs of resource guarding, which is good. I can also take toys away when we are playing as well. I am able to touch her all over and pick her up without any problems. Nutmeg is very curious and attentive during puppy enrichment activities and is learning to “sit” and “shake” with a bit of treat motivation.
She is a very excited when you first take her out of her kennel, so she needs a couple of minutes to calm down. Once she gets past this initial burst of energy and excitement, she does much better. We have also been working on getting her comfortable with a collar, harness and leash, she is too young to go for walks here so we just walk around the lobby and she is doing good. Nutmeg is treat motivated and ready to learn, she is learning sit and touch, as well as off when she jumps on you. I carry her into cat adoption where she can see the cats, she is very interested in them but doesn’t bark or growl. Nutmeg makes good eye contact and is looking to you to lead the way. She is very much a puppy and will need training and patience on your part, but I think that we are off to a good start. If you are looking for a lively and loving companion who will give you endless entertainment, Nutmeg is the pup for you. Come in and meet her so she can show you just what a
