It may be a new year, but we still have many dogs that came to us in 2025 that are waiting for their forever homes.

Elvira is one of those dogs. She is a one and a half year old Pit mix who has been waiting for around 100 days. Elvira was briefly adopted but returned due to her adopters having personal problems (not Elvira’s fault). She has been great with all people and dogs and is just an all-around good girl!

Check out Elvira on our website for more information and apply to adopt her today. Not ready to adopt? Ask about our day trip and sleepover programs.

💔 Over 150 Days in the Shelter… Dustin Is Still Waiting 💔

(And his adoption fee is already covered!)

It may be a new year, but we still have plenty of dogs that came to us in 2025. Meet Dustin, a 3-year-old Pitbull/Husky mix (70 lbs) with big ears and an even bigger heart. After being found injured and alone, he’s healed up and ready for his forever home — but he’s now spent over 150 days in the shelter waiting for someone to choose him.

Dustin is goofy, loving, treat-motivated, knows “sit,” and did great meeting another dog (even tried to play!). He’d be happy as an only pup or with a dog friend.

After everything he’s been through, this sweet boy deserves a family of his own. Please come meet Dustin and help end his long shelter stay.

Check out Dustin on our website for more information or contact our adoption center today. Aren't 100% sure he is right for you? Ask about our sleepover program!

🐾 **Adoption Update Success Stories!** 🐾

We are so happy to share two amazing adoption updates from one of our wonderful return adopters! The adopter shared:

**Hello! I have an update on two dogs that we’ve adopted from you! After seeing your posts, we wanted to send our success stories in to encourage everyone to adopt and not shop! ❤️

This was the original post for our girl, Mabel (more affectionately called ‘Moobs’ 😂). She had been returned once to YHS before we got her, and we are so fortunate to have had the opportunity to adopt her!

Mabel, now over two years old, loves sleeping on her people, running around her 2+ acres, playing in her kiddy pool, and snuggling with her sister, a rescue kitty!

Our other dog we adopted is Gladys—our COVID baby. Now almost 6 years old, she loves snuggling with her Chihuahua brother Bud (also a YHS alum!), chasing her sister Mabel around the yard, and is deeply committed to her weekly chicken nugget runs, sniffing all the things in the car, and chasing chickens around the yard!

We’re so grateful for all the work you do at YHS and for gifting us so many wonderful years with 3 of our perfect pups ❤️”*

Thank you so much to this incredible adopter and family for opening their home and hearts to animals in need. Stories like these remind us why adoption matters and how life-changing second chances can be. We truly appreciate your continued support and for giving our animals such loving, forever homes. 🐶❤️

Do you have a pet with an unwanted litter, or know someone who does?

The **My Last Litter Program** is designed to help curb unwanted litters of owned pets in our community.

Through this program, we provide FREE spay surgery, vaccinations, and microchipping for the mother. In return, the Yakima Humane Society will take in the **entire litter** of healthy, socialized kittens or puppies, based on available kennel space, when they are 8–10 weeks old and weigh at least 2.2 pounds.

✅ A **minimum of 3 babies** is required to qualify
✅ **The full litter must be surrendered**

All babies will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to adoption.

✨ **Pregnant pets also qualify** — please contact YHS as soon as possible
🚫 **Feral animals do not qualify** for this program

If you live in Yakima County and are interested or have questions, please contact our Adoption Center at 509-457-6854 or email [email protected].

Thank you for helping us reduce unwanted litters and support pets in our community! 🐾

📊 Weekly Numbers with Marla 🐾

Marla is sharing last week’s intake and outcome numbers — take a look to see how your support is making a difference!

While she’s helping us with the stats, Marla is also hoping to find her forever home. 💕 Marla is a 1.5-year-old Labrador/Catahoula mix who is smart, athletic, and full of potential. She and her sister Abigail were sadly dumped as puppies and didn’t get much early guidance, so they’ll need patient, committed homes that can help a large-breed pup grow into a well-mannered family dog.

Think Marla might be the one for you? Come meet her and fall in love! 🐶

💙 **Thank You, Brenley!** 💙

The Yakima Humane Society is so thankful for the incredible support of our donors and community. We recently had a very special visit from a young donor named Brenley, who saved up her own allowance to purchase toys, treats, and other much-needed supplies for our animals.

We were so happy to meet Brenley and her mom, Tamara, when they delivered these wonderful donations to YHS. Tamara also shared that she reached out to several people to encourage them to visit pet stores after the holidays to pick up items to donate to shelter animals—what a thoughtful idea!

Thank you so much, Brenley and Tamara, for your kindness, generosity, and support. Our animals are already enjoying their new toys and supplies! 🐾💙

We are always so excited to receive updates from adoptions that happened years ago. 💙 Recently, we received a wonderful update on Skeeter, who was adopted from Yakima Humane Society in 2017.

Skeeter’s adopter shared that they drove two hours from Seattle to meet him and returned a week later to bring him home after his neuter surgery. Since then, Skeeter has lived a full and adventurous life. He recovered from back surgery for a ruptured disc in 2019 and went right back to walking—and doing zoomies! He has traveled across the United States, visited several states, experienced a true snowy winter in Ottawa, Canada, and later settled in Vancouver, Washington to continue living his best life.

Now 15 years old, Skeeter has recently been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and GI disease. Through every challenge, he continues to embrace life, doing zoomies even if he’s lost a step or two. His family hopes to have him for many more years, as he brings so much joy to their home.

Below are photos of when Skeeter was at our facility in 2017, and current photos from the adopter. Thank you so much to Skeeter’s adopter for sharing this incredible update. We are beyond happy that Skeeter has such an amazing family who loves and cares for him so deeply through every stage of his life. 🐾💙 We hope Skeeter enjoys many more wonderful years with his family.

💙 Meet Mark — a gentle soul looking for safety and calm 💙

Mark is an 8-year-old Heeler mix who’s had a rough start and is finding the busy shelter world a little overwhelming. He’s a quiet boy who keeps to himself, watching and waiting, unsure of what’s being asked of him in all the noise and activity.

Mark feels safest with slow movements, soft voices, and patient people. When things are calm, you can see his sweet nature shine through. What he truly needs is a peaceful home with a fenced yard — a place where he can finally relax, feel secure, and learn that he’s safe and loved.

Mature dogs like Mark are often overlooked, but they have so much love to give. With time, understanding, and kindness, Mark will become a deeply loyal companion for someone willing to offer him the calm he’s been missing.

If you have room in your heart and home for a dog who just needs to feel safe, Mark is waiting for you. 🐾

Did you know that kittens are born blind and deaf? Their eyes open around 7–10 days old, and their ears start working shortly after. That means those tiny, wobbly explorers you see? They’re learning the world from scratch—one playful pounce at a time! 🐾
