Santos Family Farm is a diversified, organic, and sustainable family farm located in the beautiful hills of Yamhill County, Oregon. We grow over 100 different varieties of high-quality fruits, vegetables, and herbs. In addition, we integrate goats and chickens into our system and will offer eggs in the coming season. We are fortunate to have three working greenhouses on the farm that we utilize to

extend our season and provide our community nearly year-round produce. We sell at the Forest Grove Farmers Market, though our Community Supported Agriculture Program, and to local restaurants, grocery stores, and co-ops. We offer paid internships and academic credit. Check out our listings on www.localharvest.com and www.food-hub.org

Customers are always asking what we feed our chickens. Today, they’re getting spinach and arugula from rows that are finished and have been pulled out. As usual, Sampson is not interested in the offering except when he realizes it’s nice and soft to lie on.

This year’s crop of fava beans has got to be the most biggest, healthiest, and lushest ice ever seen. All thanks to the power of composted, organic chicken manure. The cool and wet weather helps too. Too bad so few people really like fava beans 😟. (No Hannibal Lector jokes - we’ve heard them all!)

Last kids for the year. Wilma is a great mama, though her kids (triplets!) are really small. She’s cleaning up the last one, as he’s still trying to figure out how to stand. A very wet and blustery day to be born!

This picture doesn’t look like much, other than that it’s a beautiful crisp early spring day at the farm. However, if you look carefully you can just make out four rows of little green nubs which are 520 newly planted strawberry plants. Organically grown strawberries are tough to pull off in Oregon, but we prepped it well with a ton of Santos Farm’s best chicken manure and we’re keeping our fingers crossed. We planted Albion here, which is one of the most popular day-neutral varieties for the PNW.

Lots of goat pics today for some reason. You’re looking at a feeder for the goats filled with nice fresh alfalfa. The goats love it, but Felecia here is just rude. Every day, she eats her full, then jumps on top and takes a nap. The rest of her friends have to wait until she gets off to resume eating.

The aftermath of taking out all those tomato plants made this greenhouse feel a whole lot less claustrophobic. We now have the opportunity to open up this space to the meat birds to make sure they are extra cozy for this upcoming winter.

As sad as it is to see the tomato plants disappear, we are fortunate to be able to grow some other fresh veggies during this time of year. With Thanksgiving approaching, come stop by this Saturday to check out some of our amazing fresh greens (arugula, lettuce mix, mesclun mix), radishes, cabbage, pac choy, definitely some of our poppin potatoes, and delicious winter squash! Plus, the scenery is beyond peaceful. Hope to see you there!

You can also catch us at the last 2021 Beaverton Market this Saturday where we will also have eggs and meat birds.

We recently transformed the largest greenhouse at the farm. With approximately 400 plants to take out, we observed some tremendous root structures and miraculous mold colonies. This is the before video transformation.

These are trays of sweet potatoes! Many people (including some at our organic certified!) said we’d never be able to grow sweet potatoes in the Pacific Northwest, but they turned out great. All those hot summer days probably helped.

There was a time before farming that I had a really cool car. I washed and waxed it regularly so it would look nice. I parked it carefully to avoid parking lot dings. Now, I have a (literally) beat to s**t farm truck. With our utility vehicle out of service, I’m using the truck to collect eggs. With the recent rains, it’s a muddy mess. I accidentally gouged the rear quarter panel coming through the gate. I stupidly left the door open while collecting eggs. Chickens being the curios creatures they are, made themselves at home inside, including crapping in my cup holder.

The beautiful thing is that none of this actually affects me anymore. I think I may have finally reached nirvana.
