The South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory has observed an increased number of farm cat deaths associated with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Please note that pet cats who are indoor/outdoor or outdoor and have contact with domestic poultry or wild birds are at risk. Cats affected with the disease appear to pass away quickly. No effective treatment for cats is currently known. At this time, there is no known transmission from cats to people or from people to cats.

Veterinarians and laboratory diagnosticians are fielding reports of death losses in cat populations linked to avian influenza infections.
