February is National Dog Dental Health Month!
Piper the and our friends at The Puppy Parlor in Yarmouth would like you to know that:
🐾 It's just as important to take care of a dog's teeth as it is to take care of human teeth!
🐾 Dogs can develop bad breath from bacteria and the food and treats they eat. Ahem...just like YOU!
🐾 Bacteria (plaque) 🦠 can accumulate on their teeth, increasing their risk of cavities and gum disease
🐾 Dog teeth age as they get older, causing the teeth to become more brittle and prone to breakage and infection, which can result in them needing to be extracted. This can be costly and traumatic for your dog, and make it harder for them to properly chew.
So, what can you do to help keep your fur baby's smile healthy and happy for life? 👇
✅ Owners should brush their dog's teeth at least 1x/day. There are dog-specific toothbrushes and toothpastes (chicken-flavored, anyone?) that make this both easy and fun for your furry friend(s)!
✅ Regular brushing is low-cost and, as with any preventative practice (like routine dental checkups and cleanings for humans), can save owners a lot of money over time compared to incurring unexpected expenses due to problems that may arise that could have been prevented.
✅ Give them a spa day! The average dog usually visits the dog grooming salon every 4-6 weeks, but usually only sees their vet once or twice a year if they're healthy. A great groomer, like you'll find at The Puppy Parlor, can look at your dog's mouth and make a visual assessment, as well as a referral to the vet if there appear to be any concerns that warrant further investigation.
Visit www.puppyparlormaine.com or give them a call at (207)846-9800 for more information or to schedule a doggy spa day!
And don't forget to set an example by visiting YOUR dentist for routine checkups and cleanings! 🦷
