For all dahlia lovers: here is a way to purchase tubers for next year and support survivors of domestic violence at the same time.
Did you know our first ever online dahlia tuber sale kicks off at 10am PST this Saturday? Did you also know that on a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide?
What do these two things have in common? Well, we woke up to yet another story of a local woman being killed by an abusive partner. She requested a protective order in 2020 and it was declined. She feared for her life and the life of her young son. This happens far too often. So, we've decided to donate 10% of our online tuber sales AND flower subscriptions to our local YWCA Clark County and its SafeChoice Program. It's an organization Barn Dog has donated to in the past and we couldn't be more grateful for the work they do in our community. Here is a bit from their website.
"The SafeChoice Program advocates for, educates, and supports those affected by domestic violence. SafeChoice has been a leader in providing domestic violence services to Clark County since 1974. In addition to operating the only domestic violence shelter serving Clark County, SafeChoice offers a wide array of services to respond to the immediate needs of victim-survivors in our community.
Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, educational background, income level, religion, ethnicity, and sexual and gender identity. Domestic violence is abusive behavior used to gain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse takes many forms; it can be physical, emotional, sexual, or financial. It is a learned behavior, and is not caused by anger, drugs or alcohol, or stress.
The SafeChoice Program empowers survivors by providing information, resources, and support to increase safety and foster healing. We collaborate with community partners to offer resources that are survivor-centered, providing participants tools to change their lives and heal. SafeChoice services are free and confidential. We strive to offer inclusive and accessible programs for survivors of diverse cultures, backgrounds, experiences, and lifestyles."
