Sangria
2.5/3yrs old
14.1hh currently
Salt Wells Creek, WY HMA
NO BLM OBLIGATIONS, Sale Authority

Sangria is such a smart mare!! She is friendly, likes attention, and will come up to the gate to be petted or for treats!
She was going to stay with me as one of my own, but we decided to part with her!
My loss is your gain! Don't hesitate on this beautiful stout young mare!!
She has the brains AND the looks to get you noticed!!!
Sangria has completed most of her gentling requirements with me already. We will be working on picking up all 4 feet and loading.
She has worn a saddle one time so far and is catching on to lunging on a line and what the word "whoa" means. She retains everything that I've done with her!

Long read. But worth it.

A little something that's been bothering me lately coming back into spring and people are wanting new mustang projects...

You found the perfect Mustang, can't live without him/her! Great! Glad you think you found your perfect horse... "Snickers" (Your new Mustang) might have a different opinion. Yes, they have their own opinion on you and your relationship with them. And ARE NOT afraid to tell you otherwise and call your bluff. 🀯 THESE HORSES ARE NOT DOMESTIC HORSES!!!

Your Mustang trainer is taking ALOT of time to evaluate and train your horse the way that works for him/her. We are very resilient and HAVE to be. "Snickers" may have a COMPLETELY different way of learning and trusting and the time it takes to do each of those with just your trainer than it did for "Lucy" the next Mustang that trainer is going to be working with that day.

And get this... The Training Does Not Always Transfer!!! πŸ€” hmmm what??? Why?? Because these aren't domestic horses!! This is not a Flicka movie. YOU have to actually put the work into YOUR horse.
Yes, your Mustang trainer will teach them that humans aren't THAT scary or going to eat them. Some get over that quicker than others. Some prefer one person to be their person and trust hard with and would rather no one else handle them for quite some time. Some love everyone right off the bat and you can't get them to leave anyone alone! They have their own personal needs and each are completely different!

Your Mustang trainer will teach them what is expected of them. They will be gentled BY YOUR TRAINER. They learned to trust your trainer to be handled by them for an INTRO into domestic life. AN INTRODUCTION... read that again... AN INTRODUCTION....... they can and will revert if you don't continue their training, continue handling and building their trust with YOU. They can and will call your bluff.

If you are close enough to your trainer to atleast make it to them once a week, that's wayy better odds of success than to come up with an excuse to not go work with your new mustang to help the Transfer. Wouldn't you rather have an issue with your mustang trainer standing there to help and teach you how to work through the problems with your mustang??

You told your trainer you'll be out weekly or multiple times a week etc to help with training. GREAT.. DO IT! WE ENCOURAGE IT!! PLEASE DO!! It helps that horse and you succeed in the long run!!

Your trainer is telling you, you need to come learn him/her and learn how he/she is taught. If you don't, and just decide to take him/her home.. well sorry that's on you.
We tell you these things for a reason. We try to set you up for success and if you'd rather not? Well I guess your about to find out the hard way that these mustangs aren't all white unicorns at the end of a rainbow with a pot of good.
Not all of them are in your pocket, like a domestic horse, right out of holding at the end of their INTRO to domestic life.

You assured the trainer you have help from another trainer in your area, can handle a horse that needs the extra build in trust, has a big ego, the lack of trust, and or the slim confidence in humans/handlers. GREAT! START USING THEM FROM DAY ONE!! Atleast with their supervision!! From the first day home!! Get your mustang trainer and your local trainer talking so your local trainer knows what to expect!! Don't want to spend the extra money for help? Ok, again, your about to find out the hard way. Especially if you don't come learn with your horse and just take it home expecting everyone and their dog to just walk right up, love on it all over, and put daisies in it's mane and tail and your told your horse needs the one on one trust building with one person, is a nervous nelly, or tense and needs the bond to learn to relax.

Your horse LITERALLY just got out of holding a month or two ago and you expect "Snickers" to be this puppy and do everything a domestic horse is going to do as soon as you get him home. That may be the case for some... but not likely.

That horse was on the range. No human told it what to do. That horse was rounded up, born in facility, whatever. Sat in a corral with basically zero human interaction for 2, 3, 4, 5? Years except for when it was ran through chutes, squeezed and/or turned to it's side, for hoof and vet care... AS NEEDED. They were NOT haltered and led and expected to behave and be ok with human handling. And guess what, "Snickers" is about to have a BIG life change. A HUMAN is about to teach them the ways of domestic life. They are about to be told to do something and expected to listen and respect a human with a piece of rope connected to their face. 🀯

"Snickers" gained enough trust to allow your trainer to gentle them. An INTRO to domestic life. Made handlable. Some have their quirks. Your trainer can sit there and explain over the phone or in a message on how to do something but it's not the same as witnessing and dealing with it in person. PERIOD.

Your trainer can catch that mustang, knowing what way is most comfortable for that horse from learning them from day one. Your trainer can lead that mustang, your trainer can brush that mustang, your trainer can pick up your mustangs feet, your trainer can load and unload your mustang from a trailer. Your trainer knows what makes your mustang uncomfortable. Your trainer knows your mustangs quirks, their edge before they are overstimulated and shut down.

If you do not take the time to have a lesson or two or three or five with your trainer and your mustang.. if you're close enough distance to do so multiple times, you better prepare yourself accordingly. You are about to bring a JUST BARELY GENTLED horse home. It is not your neighbors QH that just needs better ground manners cause it's pushy and gets away with bad habits cause the lesson kids are beginners and never rode or even handled a horsein their life. Most of these mustangs are a whole other level of intelligence. They will out smart you in a heartbeat.

Your mustang trainer has likely been doing this awhile and had seen some pretty nutball horses... they have been so resilient to continue to train these magnificent horses and try to match them with their right person. But if your dead set on "Snickers" and you assure your trainer you can handle that mustang and have help etc. And don't want to listen to your trainers recommendations by coming to learn with your Mustang. More power to you. Your gonna learn today!

Don't show up after the sun has gone down, sent someone else, who wasn't comfortable in the first place, with the trailer and expect "snickers" to go like a domestic horse would... that's not the case either. Your mustang trainer does NOT train in the dark for reasons. They act 10x more reactive! 🀯 what why?!?! Well because they are prey animals!! It's dark! Your a predator!! Even "Lucy" the dog gentle in your pocket mustang is going to act a fool to be caught, to a point, after being just barely gentled and expected to be caught, lead, and follow you into a pitch black box they are not familiar with. If they do follow your trainer into said black box without a fight or much hesitation, A great win! That means "Snickers" knew what was expected and trusted your trainer enough to load into that black box in the dark.

It is not your trainers fault, your trainer didn't lie about the mustang being gentled. Your trainer showed you videos of doing said gentling skills if you didn't want to come learn for yourself. There's your proof. Your mustang knows what's expected. But you, yourself, have not put the time into that mustang for them to trust YOU to do it.

Also when you take "Snickers" home and didn't learn how to catch that specific horse or how to handle it AT ALL while with the trainer, decide to take the drag off that was purposely left on that would have helped you, and then decide to rope/cowboy the horse... and "Snickers" PANICS from being roped or trying to be roped and goes through/over/under your corral. That my friend is now YOUR problem. Don't try to point fingers at your trainer for your lack of time to learn your new mustang with your trainer.

Believe us when we tell you things. Take our recommendations to heart. We are trying to set you up for success. Make yours, "Snickers'", and your trainers lives easier.
