If you frequently take your pet outside, be wary of places where your pet may encounter a snake bite. Snakes can catch people (and pets) by surprise. Snakes seek out warm places to go and can often be found in places like forests, swamps, grasslands, or in your yard.

Most snakes are harmless to people and pets. If you see a snake cross your path, it’s best to leave it alone and let it pass. Nonvenomous snakes will likely continue on their own, never to be seen again.

Venomous snakes, on the other hand, can be dangerous. An encounter with them should be handled carefully.

Dogs are naturally curious creatures, and if they come across a snake their natural instinct will be to sniff around and investigate. If a snake feels threatened by the dog, it will likely bite. If your dog is bitten by a snake, here are a few important steps to follow:

Stay Calm:

Try to identify if it’s a venomous or nonvenomous snake. (Perhaps take a picture with your phone to help identify it.)

Inspect your dog. If the snake bite was venomous, you’ll see significant swelling in the area where the dog was bitten.

Determine whether emergency care is needed. If your dog is having difficulty breathing or has collapsed, get them to an emergency pet clinic right away.

On Wednesday, May 29th, we will be joining forces with Animal Allies Clinic to host a NO COST Spay and Neuter event for the York County Community.

This event is open to YORK COUNTY RESIDENTS ONLY (valid ID showing York County address required). Spots are limited and are avaliable on a first call, first serve basis. There is a limit of up to 2 pets or community cats per resident/family.
*All pet cats must be in a hard sided carrier.
*Community/feral cats must arrive and transport in trap.
**All dogs must be leashed and all cats must arrive in a carrier or trap.

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY CALLING ANIMAL ALLIES AT 864-572-5851. MUST MENTION YORK COUNTY TRANSPORT WHEN CALLING TO SCHEDULE. The shelter cannot schedule appointments as the clinic must gather info from pet owner.

Drop off will be 7 AM and pick up same day at 4 PM at the York County Animal Shelter. Pet owner MUST be present at time of drop off and pick up and must have pre-registered their pet.

*Microchips or other additional services in addition to Spay/Neuter may be available at an additional cost to resident through Animal Allies. Please request when registering.
