I've never been a big fan of January...

We have two family members with birthdays in November followed by Thanksgiving, and then the big Christmas holiday in December. January seems to be a forgotten month. A month to recuperate from the joys and stresses of the holidays. A placeholder month that is only there to get the new year started.

I ran across something yesterday that said January is National supper month and the Second Sunday of the month (today!) is National supper day. National Sunday Supper Day encourages families to make a point to gather around the table to enjoy a meal and a conversation together each year as the new year begins. Who knew?

Our family has been so busy the last several weeks and honestly, I needed the reminder to slow down and take a moment to just take a deep breath and enjoy being with the ones I cherish the most. If any of my farm friends are feeling the same, here's your own reminder.

It might be bitterly cold outside at the moment, but barn life goes on. We put some of our Nigerian Dwarf does in breeding pens this week and we're in the beginning stages of planning for chick days! BBS Copper Marans and Olive egger chicks will continue to be offered this year. We saw great egg color from our 2024 marans pullets and have some nice cockerels in our breeding pens for this season. Information about Ancona ducklings, EmbdenX goslings, BBS Ameraucana is on the way - so stay tuned.

With every new year, we like to take time to reflect on the memories from the year that has just ended. Life with livestock is rarely easy, but the animals and the people we meet along the way make the struggles worth the effort. As we set new goals for our goat herd and our poultry flocks for the year we've just begun, we'd like to thank our farm friends for being part of our journey. Here's to a new year filled with good health and happiness for us all.

Did my nightly camera checks before bed last night and on two of the cameras I could hear chirping coming from the buck barn. Ran down to see what was going on an apparently one of our Swedish flower hen mamas had hidden a nest in the back of the barn under my hoof trimming stand and hatched some chicks!
