South Carolina summer is upon us and it's only getting hotter out there this week! 🥵

Here are a few things to keep in mind for your furry family members:

☀️ Asphalt and pavement temperatures are *much* hotter than the temperature of the air. Test the ground by placing your hand the surface and leaving it for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws!

☀️ Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle. Temperatures in a parked car can become more than 40 degrees hotter than the outside temperature in minutes. Cracking windows does not help!

☀️ Watch for signs of heatstroke which include heavy panting, rapid heartbeat, lethargy, and excessive thirst. Learn more about heatstroke in dogs: https://i.mtr.cool/ghqvwzsmdv

Have a safe and fun summer!

🎆 It's time to prep your pets for the Fourth of July! While this holiday is fun for us, fireworks can be very stressful for our pets. More pets run away and go missing during the Fourth of July than any other time of the year. Be sure to take these steps to prepare:

🐾 Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags

🐾 Get your pet microchipped or update your pet's microchip info if needed

🐾 Contact your vet to discuss calming medications if your pet is sensitive to loud noises

🐾 Check your fences to make sure there is no way for a pet to get out.

🐾 Make sure your pet has a safe place to go to in your environment.

🐾 Follow Lost and Found Pet pages on Facebook and save https://24petconnect.com/ to your favorites where you can see pets that come into the shelter under Lost My Pet.

The crisis in animal sheltering has now gone global. 😨
Our plea to our community is to CHOOSE to be part of the solution.

How?
1. Spay and Neuter your pets. There is FREE spay neuter resources in our community. The overpopulation crisis is real and this is the #1 way you can make a difference.

2. Adopt! Find your next pet at a shelter or rescue. Some of your healthiest pets are mixed breeds and if you are looking for a specialty breed, there are so many rescues out there that specialize in specific breeds. And because most are foster based, they can actually tell you what they are like in a home.

3. Foster! Not ready for a full- time commitment but want to help? Fostering is where it is at. Check out your local rescues and become a short term foster for a pet until it finds it furever family. This is a very rewarding experience.

We can all make a difference. One 🐾 at a time!

The animal sheltering crisis is not limited to North America. Shelters across the globe are overcrowded, with euthanasia for space increasing for the first time in decades.

The RSPCA, one of the oldest and largest animal sheltering systems in the world, announced it is "at the breaking point." The organization has thousands of animals in care and is spending more than $500,000 a month in private boarding facilities because its shelters are full. The RSPCA attributes the number of animals languishing in its shelters to the rising cost of living that is forcing families to give up their pets and to avoid adopting new animal companions.

This crisis in animal sheltering is world-wide. In the US, shelter overcrowding and euthanasia for space is increasing for the first time in decades. It is urgent to scale up pet-inclusive housing, pet adoptions, spay/neuter, and access to affordable vet care.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT
🌼 MAY 🏵

We often get asked what area do all the pets that come into the shelter come from? And to be honest, most times it was a best guess. Not anymore!
Recently our system updated and allowed us to generate stats so that we can analyze where animals are coming from.

Why is this important?
This allows us to focus our community outreach, intervention, and enforcement programs in certain areas based on need.

Our graphic below will show information monthly on where stray and surrendered pets are coming from. It will also have key information on what percentage of these pets came in unsterilized. Don't forget the number one way to prevent overpopulation is to SPAY AND NEUTER!
