BRRRRRRR! 🥶 Happy National Alaskan Malamute Day!

Even those snow-loving fluff-balls of energy require extra care and consideration during winter events. Here are some tips to keep your pups happy and healthy in these frigid temperatures. As for the kitties .... they don't even want to think about being outside in this! Keep them inside. Oh .... and the kitties are requesting that you build a nice fire in the fireplace and give them something soft to lay on near it! 😽

P.S. Be aware that sidewalk de-icers / road salt can be irritating to your pup's paws. Please wash and dry their feet when they come inside after walking on treated surfaces.

That is how the song goes, isn't it? 😉

Here's some last-minute suggestions for the pets still on your holiday shopping list. And please remember the pets who will spend the holidays waiting for their "furever" homes by making a holiday donation to your local shelter or pet rescue.

P.S. And please do not buy (or gift) holiday rawhide treats! That "candy cane for dogs" may look festive, but the trip to the veterinarian that often follows these "treats" will leave you (and Fido) feeling less than "merry and bright."

Wishing all a happy holiday season! 🥰

“All creatures great and small ….”

Today is World Wildlife Conservation Day!

Though we don’t (typically) wake up to find big cats prowling our yards, a wolf curled up snoozing under our ornamental trees, or a whale breaching in our swimming pools, our world is made richer (and more balanced) by the presence of wildlife.

Please take this day to remember how important it is to protect the wildlife we are blessed with, and to act respectfully and responsibly when encountering wildlife. Wildlife can be harmed by people with the best intentions. If you find an injured wild animal in our area, please reach out to Tidewater Wildlife Rescue at 757-255-8710.

If the animal is in a relatively safe location, avoid handling or moving the animal until you speak with a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. If you must move the animal, make note of where he/she was found. Do not feed or attempt to give the animal water unless instructed to do so by a rehabilitator. Oral fluids given incorrectly can go into the animal’s lungs and cause death, and improper diets can be harmful.

Thank you for cherishing "all creatures great and small."

Let's just call it like it is. Dogs lie. 😂

They will tell you it is OK for them to join in on our Thanksgiving meal and eat anything (and EVERYTHING) offered up at our feasts. Don't be fooled by that (incredibly) cute face and those pleading eyes.

See our tips in the comments below for pet-safe Thanksgiving treats. And remember, even "safe" foods in anything more than a small sample can cause problems in our pets.

P.S. Cats don't lie. They just don't even bother to ask. 😂😍

Photo: "Ro" who is the manager of our practice manager, Lisa, tries to con us into inviting him for dinner. We are on to him. Never mind that his nickname is already "Groceries." 😍🤣

October 24th is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. Helping your pet maintain a healthy weight is an important part of being a pet parent. Today is World Rabies Awareness Day!

Rabies is the deadliest infectious disease in the world, with approximately 60,000 people worldwide dying from the disease each year. Once symptoms develop, there is no cure, and the disease is nearly 100% fatal in both humans and animals.

Rabies infections in humans in the United States are rare due to vaccination of many domestic cats and dogs but the disease can be contracted from wildlife (in particular bats, racoons, skunks and foxes). All domestic cats and dogs should be vaccinated against rabies … even “indoor only” cats, since bats (who may roost in attics and chimneys) finding their way into homes is not unheard of.

Many cases of rabies in humans in the United States have been related to people who were bitten by stray cats or dogs while visiting countries that do not have rigorous rabies vaccination programs. Please remember to keep your pets’ rabies vaccine current!

Photo: Team member Cindy's grey-faced Belgian Malinois, Shenzi, lives up to the nickname for the breed...."Fur Missle." True story on the sign! She was current on her rabies vaccine and received an extra booster vaccination! Dog and family doing well. Bat ... not-so-much.

September 21st is National Cat and Dog Gut Health Awareness Day!

In addition to following guidelines for basic cat and dog nutrition, monitoring for (and preventing) internal parasites is vital to pets' health. Heartworm preventives offer some protection against intestinal parasites, and a yearly f***l test for both cats and dogs is recommended to help pets stay healthy.

If your pet has a sensitive stomach, talk with your veterinarian about prescription diets and probiotics. Be conscientious in choosing treats for your pets and avoid feeding table scraps.

"Garbage In - Garbage Out" doesn't always apply to pets! Sometimes pets ingest things they cannot digest or pass through the GI tract (fabric, string, toys, corn cobs, etc). Gastrointestinal obstruction is a life-threatening emergency. If you know your pet has ingested a foreign body, or your pet is vomiting, refusing food, drinking extra water, panting excessively and appears anxious, is unable to pass f***l material or having diarrhea, is restless, and/or appears bloated then contact your veterinarian (or an emergency clinic) right away.

A healthy pet starts with a happy tummy!

Hurricane season reminds us that we need to be prepared, but disaster can strike at any time. Having a pet "go bag" prepared helps ensure pets' safety in times of crises.

Talk with your veterinarian in advance about having medications or calming treats to help your pet deal with the anxiety that may result from a crises situation.

Feel-good story alert!
"What Walmart would you shop at?" isn't a our traditional question when a citizen asks requests assistance, but in this case it paid off, literally!
Chad originally reached out to us for assistance in April. At that time, PAWS IN NEED and York Veterinary Hospital were able to provide some assistance, and we submitted a grant application to the local Wal-mart where Chad gets his grocery deliveries! Walmart Norfolk - Tidewater Dr came through last month with funding to support several months of vet care.
Bastian is Chad's service dog, and in one of his original social media posts searching for assistance, some commenters raised concerns about Bastian's ability to serve if he were in need of treatment for arthritis. These comments were really distressing to Chad and he addresses those concerns in his thank-you below. Upon meeting Bastian, we had no concerns about his overall health and no concerns at all about him continuing to perform his medical alert duties.
Please read Chad's thank you message below.

"I wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you that has helped Bastian and I with financial assistance for Bastian’s monthly Librela injections. They have made his joint pain nearly non-existent. Without your kindness and generosity I would not be able to afford these injections and I never want to see Bastian in any pain. Bastian is my service dog and the services he has been trained to perform are medical alerts where he will detect a scent that my body will produce at the oncoming of a seizure. He will immediately alert me and also will bring my medication that will prevent the seizures from happening. No human and no computer is capable of providing that amazing service. He is also for PTSD and without him I would never leave my home. Think of it as my best friend, my guardian, my life line.
For those of you that believe a service dog is mistreated I would invite you to educate yourself on the benefits that these amazing creatures are capable of doing. If I had arthritis I would do whatever I could to suppress the pain, so why would you think the same for an animal is a form of cruelty? I would say the opposite would be animal cruelty by not helping the animal suppress their pain.
I have attached a few pictures of me and Bastian which most were taken in my backyard, the one place that he does not wear his Service Dog vest and where he is allowed to be a dog and run, play, chase the ball, etc. He is the happiest boy you would ever meet and I can promise you that. Thank you again for also reassuring me that there still are great humans out there. "

Summer fun includes swimming for our puppers, but ....

Beware of toxic blooms on the water’s surface that may
look like spilled green paint or pea soup. Steer clear of
lakes, ponds, and streams with visible algae blooms and
check local advisories for warnings. If you suspect your pet
was exposed to blue green algae, seek immediate care.
