Independence Day is coming up! Now is the time to reach out to your veterinarian to discuss supplements and medications that can help calm your pet during the festivities.

The fireworks festivities often begin early (sometimes weeks in advance) with random "surprises" that can startle pets into running off or injuring themselves. Please be considerate of nearby pet parents, and properties with livestock, when celebrating.

On March 13, 1942 the United States Army launched the War Dog program and began training K-9s for military service. Since that time, highly trained working dogs have become an integral part of our military and police departments. They have saved countless soldiers, police officers and private citizens ... at times paying the ultimate price themselves. Today we honor K-9 Veterans and pay our respects to the ones who "gave all."

More information on the sudden closing of Save This Life microchip company. There is a link in the article to BuddyID, who is providing free registration to clients affected by the sudden shutdown.

The closure of a pet microchip company sparks confusion, but AAHA's microchip registry lookup tool can help.

If your pet's microchip was registered with the Save This Life microchip registry, you will need to re-register the chip with another company. The Save This Life company has apparently shut down without warning and without transferring their data to any other registry. Your pet should not have to have another chip implanted, but please have your pet's chip scanned to be sure it still registers.

York Veterinary Hospital uses the HomeAgain Pet Recovery system to register the chips we have implanted.

‼️ATTENTION! URGENT!!! ‼️

EDIT: We are being told the promo code VEDCO is still working to register for $9.99 with Petlink!

If you have had your pet microchipped at FAM at any time in the past, or used this site to register your pet, YOU MUST ACT ON THIS! Save This Life Microchips has SHUT DOWN and removed your contact info from the national database. PLEASE immediately use one of these sites to register your pet with the national registry.

We are working diligently to communicate to all pet owners, and to find any other potential solutions, but in the meantime, this is the best way to make sure your info is available if your pet becomes lost and is scanned at a vet clinic or shelter.

In 1927, an article written by Dorothy Harrison Eustis (an American dog breeder) was published in the Saturday Evening Post. In her essay, Ms. Eustis described a guide-dog exhibition she had witnessed in Germany. After reading her article, Morris Frank reached out to her and asked her to train a dog for him.

Ms. Eustis trained a German Shepherd Dog named Buddy who was then partnered with Mr. Frank, enabling him to live independently. Mr. Frank is considered to be the first person to have been paired with a “seeing-eye dog.” On January 29, 1929, Morris Frank and Dorothy Harrison Eustis went on to found Partnering with The Seeing Eye, with the intent of training dogs to assist World War I veterans who had lost their vision in battle. Since that time, countless dogs have gone on to provide guidance and companionship to the visually impaired.

The most common breeds used today in guide-dog work are Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. They undergo extensive training, and in addition to assisting their owners move safely through their environments, these dogs can assess other dangers and move their partners to safety. They are even sensitive to changes in the weather and will alert their partners to impending storms.

Today we recognize the anniversary of the founding of Partnering with The Seeing Eye, we express our gratitude for those who train these extraordinary dogs, and we celebrate the lives that have been restored through the devotion and willing nature of “man’s best friend.”
