After a very rough 2 months in which we almost lose at him and had to work hard to get a diagnosis, Quill is finally able to play again. I’m working on sharing his story in my blog.

I haven't given an update on Quill, my 16 month Labrador puppy, since Dec. 26.

Quill started getting sick on December 22, he went from a little bit of vomiting, to throwing up MASSIVE amounts of bile, with a steady stream of foam and mucus. At one point it was like it was STRINGS of thick mucusy stuff, like ropes of it that were nearly choking him.

We went to one ER vet, and by that point he had fluid coming from his nose. They diagnosed him as a megaesophogus dog and sent me home.

As soon as we got home, he started having a weird little tilt to his head, and I promptly took him to a DIFFERENT ER vet on Christmas Eve morning. They admitted him with aspiration pnemonia, and he was there until Dec 27. His symptoms indicated myasthenia gravis, so they put him on a medicine to treat that, and he started to improve. That test has since come back negative, but apparently it's not 100% accurate, so he could still have it.

We've had some reoccuring vomit and bile, and his head tilt comes and goes. My husband built him a Bailey Chair the day he came home, we fed him from that for a week, and the most recent xrays show that his esophogus is back to normal. I'm still feeding him little meatballs by hand so that his head and neck are extended up but he's not in the official chair, just to be on the safe side.

We've been back at the ER multiple times and back to our primary vet several times.

I've slept on the "dog sofa" next to his crate, I've lived off of zero sleep, coffee, and the last of the Christmas cookies and holiday cheeses. I've cried, I've lost my s**t on the phone to the ER vet and subsequently apologized all over myself. If my insurance covers this, I want to send them the most epic snack basket or something to say thank you.

I have a team of people working on helping us figure this out. My own vet is incredible and truly loves my dogs. We are looking into all sorts of things.

Right now he's home napping and seems to be improving. We are accepting all of the prayers, good vibes, manifestations for answers and good results, and whatever well-wishes your faith offers.

I have been a HUGE proponent of pet insurance, especially after having it for Jax and Tink, then deciding it wasn't a good value, and wishing I still had it with their costly health issues. So I was adamant that Quill get it before he had any pre-existing issues.

In one week we have amassed vet bills in the 5-figure range and have had a nerve wracking few weeks not only worried about our dog, but waiting and waiting and waiting to see if our pet insurance will cover this.

But as my favorite quote says, "You don't throw away a whole life just because it's banged up a little."

Some friends with a beautiful heart have mentioned a public campaign to help us, but instead I'm going to offer some workshops for dog owners that can help us pay for his bills while also providing you some very important knowledge as dog owners!

Quilly has been in a veterinary ICU for the last 3 days. He started vomiting, then regurgitating, and then rivers of drool coming from him, and then holding his head funny. He’s in good hands, is making progress, and probably about to be diagnosed with something called myasthenia gravis. We are hoping he will be home in a few days. Good vibes and thoughts only, prayers are welcome. This boy has taken over my heart in the last year. He’s the heart dog my heart dog sent.
