"I don't want to disappoint you, but there is a good chance I'm going to!"

Just because you own a fleshing/shaving machine also known as a round knife it does not mean that you know how to properly use it.

It's not your fault, it's these companies that pump em out and sell them to anyone with zero info on operating it the correct way. Mostly because they don't have anyone that can tell you how to run it. It's all about moving product and the bottom line.

I'm sorry, but I can't teach you what you need to know in a text or phone call. I have provided information in my blog on my website as well as countless social media post. It's there for free with a click of a button.

I've also put forth the time and effort to offer a professionally produced online instructional video that is available on my website fleshingmachines.com at a very reasonable price.

Using these machines correctly and efficiently is truly something that must be mastered. It takes time and experience to conquer the learning curve.

It's up to you to click and purchase the videos that can show you what I learned in 18+ years in a commercial tannery.

A little different perspective of regrinds on fleshing machine blades. Here is a used blade I was recently in the process of grinding, you can see here that I have the new bevel well started and the old lip or cutting wire has been ground off. But there is also a perfect view of the wear(groove) that was created by the bottom tuning steel as the previous grind on this blade lived it's life and served it's purpose. A little more grinding and this imperfection will be removed and I can roll a new lip. I just thought I would share something that very few have ever seen. (Pic is a touch blurred due to the blade spinning as it was taken.)

I wanted to try and clear up a little information that I guess I have taken for granted and assumed it was common sense to everyone, but I guess if you don't know how it works it's tough to understand.

A new blade blank has a square edge on it and measures 12" in diameter across the center. Once it is ground and a cutting lip is turned for the first time by me on my grinder (others may vary) you lose approx 1/8"-3/16" ( for those that can't read a tape measure that is 2-3 of the little lines within the 1/4" mark).

Every time I regrind a blade it loses a little more because you have to remove the old lip, grind new bevels on both sides and turn a new cutting lip. As you can see in the series of photos starting with a blank, then a new ground blade and finally a used blade with 3-4 grinds on it.

My grinder can grind a blade down to around 10 3/4" and some machines can may go farther. Personally I trash a blade once it gets down to 11"-11 1/4" because you have lost so much cutting surface (or circumference) that it just isn't time efficient for me.

So I said all of that to say this....I call a new blade 12" some call them 11 3/4", and this is the reason you can run across a used 12" machine with a smaller blade or used blades that are anywhere from 10 1/2"-11 7/8". They all started as a 12" blank, that's why when I refer to blades I say 12" Fleshing Machine Blades or 12" Round Knives.

Hope this helps to clear up a little of the lingo and explanation of how these blades become different diameters.

Do you ever have those arbor bolts that refuse to come out due to corrosion and they end up stripping? Just a touch of thread lubricant each time you change out the blade will cure this issue.

There is some more free information with video tutorial just in case someone is following along.
