Microfilaria
Let's talk Heartworms ❤️🩹
Those little, wiggly, white swirls in the microscope video are called Microfilaria. This is one of two heartworm tests we run when we pull blood for your dog's annual wellness visit. This is a sample taken from a dog who missed prevention and is now heartworm positive.
Heartworms are transmitted by 🦟mosquitoes and both 🐶dogs and 🐱cats can have heartworms but, unfortunately, there is no treatment option for cats. The best thing you can do for your furry companions is keep them on consistent heartworm prevention🛡.
📅It takes up to 6 months from the time of an infected mosquito bite to test positive for heartworms so if you know your pet has missed a dose, it is important to contact our office to resume prevention and schedule a heartworm test.
There may be no signs at all in the early stages, but you can watch for the following symptoms if you know your pet has missed a dose:
😷Coughing
🥴Lethargy
🤢Decreased Appetite
😮💨Shortness of Breath
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved clinic cat Calypso. In the short time we had her, this sweet girl made herself at home in the clinic and in our hearts. She will be missed terribly by the staff.
