With the recent rains, you’ve probably noticed that ‘wet dog’ smell creeping in a little more often!

While it's a natural part of the season, regular baths and wiping down your dog’s coat after walks can help manage the odor. If the smell lingers even after cleaning, it could be a sign of a skin issue like infection or allergies.

At Davies, we’re here to help with advice on keeping your pet fresh and healthy all fall.

We believe caring for pets goes beyond routine checkups and vaccinations. Our dedicated RVT Supervisor, Ashley, reminds us that understanding pets’ unique needs is essential for their health and happiness. With over 12 years of experience in the field, Ashley has seen firsthand what a difference compassionate, knowledgeable care can make in a pet’s life.

“Every pet is different,” Ashley said. “Some come in feeling anxious, while others are eager and curious. It’s all about reading their body language and understanding what they need to feel comfortable.”

If you have a question or need help to care for your pet, come by to Davies, where we aim to treat every patient with tenderness and care.

Carolina, a veterinary assistant at Davies Animal Hospital, brings with her the unique perspective of a seasoned veterinarian from Mexico City.

For nearly 10 years, she practiced independently in Mexico, managing a full caseload of nearly 30 pets a day without the assistance of veterinary technicians — a role less common in Mexico.

“We don’t usually have techs in Mexico,” Carolina said. “You do everything a tech does and what a doctor does, too.”

At Davies, Carolina noted the structure and efficiency that come from having a team of specialists and veterinary technicians.

“With techs and other assistants, each person has a specific role, which makes the workload more organized,” she said.

As a veterinary assistant, Carolina has found support and camaraderie at Davies, where the team works together to create a welcoming environment.

“Everyone is nice with each other,” she said. “They’ve all been very kind to me, and that makes a difference.”

She hopes to attend UC Davis and eventually obtain her U.S. veterinary license.

While it’s still Vet Tech Week, it is also Pharmacy Tech Week, and we're excited to highlight Miguel, our first pharmacy tech, who has been with us since 2020.

Coming from a background in human pharmacies, Miguel has brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise, helping to transform the way we handle medications for our patients.

“When I first started, the pharmacy space was still evolving, and we’ve worked hard to shape it into what it is today,” Miguel shared.

One of Miguel’s biggest contributions has been organizing a dedicated pharmacy area, unique to pet hospitals of our size.

“We started from the hallway with drugs on the shelf, to actually having a space for us to do something,” he said.

Thanks to his efforts, the pharmacy is a well-structured and efficient space, ensuring that prescriptions are prepared and labeled with care, making it easier for clients to receive clear, organized information about their pets’ medications.

Miguel has also added a personal touch helping clients understand their pets’ medications and exploring cost-saving options, and his approach is one of constant improvement.

“Every day is an opportunity to progress, and we’ve come so far,” he said.

Thank you, Miguel, for being an integral part of our team and for helping to make our pharmacy a vital part of Davies.

Britteny is one of our dedicated RVTs at Davies whose influence extends well beyond her technical skills. She has been instrumental in creating a fun, welcoming atmosphere for both staff and clients.

As one of the organizers behind the hospital’s Spirit Days and Halloween Week, she brings her team together with a healthy dose of humor and camaraderie.

“I love coming up with ideas that get everyone involved,” she says, recalling one of her favorite costumes as a “Prego” tomato when she was pregnant. “It’s those little moments that make work feel like a second family.”

Beyond her leadership in shaping the hospital culture, Britteny plays a vital role in the clinic’s day-to-day operations, handling everything from initial appointments to post-surgical care.

“People don’t realize how much we do,” Britteny explains. “I can start an appointment, handle anesthesia during surgery, and manage post-op care. We’re with animals from start to finish.”

Her passion for veterinary medicine is especially strong when it comes to dental care.

“I love getting in the zone with dental work,” she says. “When an animal is cranky because of dental pain, and you get to relieve that—they come out a different animal. It’s amazing to be a part of that transformation.”

Brittany said that the best part of this job is knowing she’s made a difference in an animal’s well-being.

“Whether it’s helping a pet through a tough surgery or just giving them relief from pain, it feels good to know we’re really helping them live happier lives,” she said.

For Alexa, working at Davies as a veterinary assistant is an important step toward her future goal of specializing in equine veterinary care.

Since joining the team in February, Alexa has embraced her role with enthusiasm, seeing each day as an opportunity to grow her hands-on experience and build her skills with the support of her colleagues.

As a recent graduate from Yuba College’s vet tech program, Alexa is working toward passing her licensing exam to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. In the meantime, she’s learning valuable practical skills at Davies.

“It’s one thing to study for an exam, but another to work directly with animals every day,” she said. “Here, I’m getting real-world experience that I couldn’t get in the classroom, which is going to be so helpful as I move forward.”

Alexa’s passion for animals started early. Growing up surrounded by chickens, rabbits and even a couple of horses, she always knew she wanted to work with animals.
She dreams of specializing in equine care, a path that would allow her to work closely with the horses she’s always loved.

“Horses are honestly my passion,” Alexa said. “I’ve loved them since I was little, and working here is helping me gain the skills I need to eventually work in equine veterinary care.”

Davies has proven to be an ideal environment for her early career. From assisting with routine checkups to being involved in animals’ recovery, she feels supported by both the staff and the learning opportunities.

“It’s incredible to be part of a team where you’re not only helping animals, but you’re also learning every day,” she said. “The doctors and techs here are great about sharing their knowledge, and I feel like I’m building a strong foundation for my future.”

In honor of Vet Tech Week, we’re celebrating Ashley, our dedicated RVT Supervisor at Davies Animal Hospital. Ashley plays a vital role not only in animal care but also in training the next generation of veterinary technicians.

With over 12 years of experience, she brings both skill and compassion to the job, guiding new techs as they begin their careers.

“Much of my job is about training and helping others grow in this field,” Ashley says. “It’s a privilege to watch new techs develop their skills and become confident in what they do.”

Ashley’s passion for teaching is evident in every aspect of her role. From mastering techniques in anesthesia to perfecting radiograph positioning, she ensures each technician is fully prepared to care for animals in need.

“Some of our team members come straight out of school, and I get to be the one who helps them with their first venipuncture or guides them through their first surgical case,” she says. “Watching their growth is incredibly rewarding.”

Beyond technical skills, Ashley is dedicated to instilling a sense of purpose and compassion in her team.

“The best part is seeing someone become more than just a tech—they become someone an animal can trust in their most vulnerable moments,” she says. “That’s what this job is all about.”

At Davies, we know Halloween can be a fun and festive time, but it can also be risky for your pets. Chocolate treats are everywhere this season, and while they’re a delicious indulgence for us, they’re highly toxic for dogs.

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which can cause serious health issues in dogs, including vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, and seizures. Dark and baking chocolates are particularly dangerous due to their high theobromine content. As you celebrate, keep your candy bowls out of reach and remind trick-or-treaters to keep chocolate treats away from your furry friends.

If you suspect your dog may have accidentally eaten chocolate this Halloween, don’t hesitate— contact us at (530) 671-3014 or call a pet poison control center right away.

Quick action is essential, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is available 24/7 at (888) 426-4435. Let’s keep this spooky season safe for everyone, pets included!
