Tips From The Training Yard:

Arguments/Fights Between Housemates

Tension between housemates should be addressed prior to arguments/fights! A fight does not just happen "out of the blue"!

Check your relationship! Are you the leader? Do you have boundaries and rules and do you apply them? Dogs will behave like dogs if they do not have your leadership!

Spay and neuter your dogs. This can reduce aggression especially when combined with training.

Physically and mentally fulfill your dogs. Regular structured play/ exercise and mental stimulation through training can reduce aggression by alleviating boredom, frustration and excess energy.

Control the resources including food, toys, real estate (beds, where the dogs sleep, etc.), fun and affection. This makes you the source of all good things and very valuable!

Seek professional help if you need it.

Tips From The Training Yard:

Neutering/Spaying Your Puppy

Neutering/spaying are surgical procedures that sterilize dogs and prevent pet over population.

The health benefits include reduced risk of certain types of cancers, hormone related tumors and infection. Puppies recover quicker from surgical procedures.

There are behavioral benefits including reduced marking, mounting, reduced types of aggressive behavior and more interest in their humans. Surgical sterilization benefits dogs socially as well.

The timing of neutering/spaying should be discussed with your veterinarian. Some studies have indicated an increased risk of cruciate ligament rupture, these studies were small, limited, and did not include mixed breed dogs. Waiting too long can result in life long behavior problems.

Consider your individual puppy/dog. If you are experiencing fear and/or aggression, surgically altering your dog should be considered sooner rather than later!

Tips From The Training Yard:

Things Good Dog People Do!

"Wait till eight"! Puppies that remain with their mother and littermates until at least 8 weeks of age benefit nutritionally and socially. Puppies removed prior to eight weeks often suffer from anxiety, aggression, fear and reactivity as adult dogs.

Condition their puppy/dog to a crate! This will provide a safe space and protect your dog. A crate will assist with house training too.

Physically and mentally engage their dog daily! This strengthens your relationship and prevents unwanted behaviors.

Introduce a collar and leash! Clear communication is achieved using these tools.

Provide regular immunization and medical care! Developing a relationship with your veterinarian promotes a long and healthy life.

Train basic obedience! A dog that has training enjoys a safer, more included life.

Our dogs deserve the best!

Tips From The Training Yard:

Find Your Calm And Stay In It!

Consider your mood prior to training:

Firm, not angry.
Confident, not fearful.

Don't take your dog's behavior personally:

Set goals, divide tasks finely.
Develop your skill, be open to change.

Have discipline:

Take a break, but don't quit.
Seek professional help. Practice in safe, controlled environments will boost your confidence. That will help you find your calm and allow you to stay in it!
