Tips From The Training Yard:

Things Good Dog People Don't Do!

They don't use the "rescue pass"! Don't leave a dog in a fearful, anxious, unable to function state. Move them forward with kind and patient handling so that they feel better and do better.

They don't ignore their dog's daily physical and mental requirements! Depending on your dog's age, health and predominant breed they require 30 minutes to 3 hours of exercise per day. Mentally and physically stimulating your dog fulfills them and prevents problem behaviors.

They don't allow too much freedom! A puppy/dog off leash prior to training a reliable recall can become lost, can get hit by a car or can be subject to predation. Having rules and boundaries in place teaches your dog what is and what isn't safe and acceptable.

They don't accidentally reinforce unwanted behavior by offering affection at the wrong time! What feels good often doesn't do good. Put the needs of the puppy/dog first, understand "you get what you pet"!

They don't over stimulate/excite their dog! A dog's requirements for sleep are higher than a human's. Train an "off switch" so the dog knows how to relax. Teach the dog that you will relaibly return and that being alone certain times of the day is safe and desirable.

They don't ignore the small things that eventually become BIG things! Delay in addressing behaviors such as reactivity, nipping and resource guarding often leads to serious consequences. Clear communication will strengthen your relationship and avoid unwanted behavior.

They don't take advice from a non professional regarding training and medical care! Your veterinarian is your best source of medical advice. A certified dog trainer is your best source of behavior modification and training.

Be the dog person that your puppy/dog deserves! You can do it!

Tips From The Training Yard:

What You Think Your Dog Dislikes Versus What They Actually Dislike!

What humans think their dogs dislike is often more about what the human dislikes:

-Exercise and Training! Dogs enjoy moving their bodies in age and health appropriate ways. Let your dog inspire YOU to become more active.

- Equipment! Properly conditioned to equipment such as training collars, muzzles and crates, dogs enjoy clear communication, positive time with their people and having their own space.

- Structure and Rules! Dogs thrive on routine. Having structure and rules creates security, builds trust and increases calm behavior.

What your dog actually dislikes:

- Hugging! While some dogs tolerate hugs, this gesture immobilizes them, causes anxiety and is often perceived as threatening.

- Forced Interactions! Forcing your dog to greet especially on leash can lead to misunderstandings and anxiety due to restricted movement!

- Unclear Body Language! Dogs rely on body language to interpret human intention. Looming over a dog, petting roughly and staring intently may be meant affectionately, but can be perceived as a challenge or threatening to a dog.

Take a minute! Consider canine behavior when interacting with dogs! We can live happily and safely with our best friends!

Tips From The Training Yard:

Frequently Repeated False Information

False information repeated often becomes perceived as true by people due to repeated exposure. It happens even when people initially know that the misinformation is false! This is know as the illusory truth effect.

Common untruths regarding dog training:

- One size fits all training! Dogs and the humans that love them vary a great deal. A fearful, shut down dog will have different requirements than a pushy, self directed dog. There is both science and art to dog training and a skilled professional will tailor training to best help each individual handler and their dog.

- Purely positive or force free training! These terms are used to manipulate emotion. Humans place dogs on leash and compel them to live in human society. All four quadrants of operant conditioning must be used for effective training. A dog with obedience training that understands rules and boundaries enjoys a bigger, more included life.

- Training tools are weapons! The skillful use of training tools will benefit both you and your dog. Dogs that are conditioned to a crate will understand house training and relaxing. Muzzles can protect your vet and groomer who often have to touch frightened or injured dogs. Training collars and leashes are communication tools. They must be appropriate, correctly fitted and skillfully used.

- Rehoming is an easy solution! Rehoming is the solution occasionally if you are not able to provide for the dog financially or physically. Please consider who will have more time or provide a better home than YOU especially if you have raised the dog! Prioritize exercise and training. Get professional help when you need it. You CAN do it!

Tips From The Training Yard:

Three Essential Fundamentals!

Teach these three fundamental principles to your puppy or newly adopted dog:

Crate train! A crate is their modern day den. It is security, safety and a place to relax.

Teach a loose-leash heel! This skill makes daily life pleasant. It ultimately allows your dog to be more included in your life.

Be Your Dog's Leader! Set rules and boundaries. Teach and reward desired behavior. Care for them with patience, kindness and love.

You will experience shared joy and live happily and safely together!
