Title: Animal Medical Technician
Type: Full-Time
Reports to: Shelter Manager
An Animal Medical Technician must have hands on experience in animal husbandry. This includes skills necessary to identify the potential of health related issues regarding the shelter animals. Possess the medical knowledge to evaluate and treat health related conditions as prescribed by the Staff Veterinarian. Must be able to successfully and humanely restrain animals and administer medications. Also, must be comfortable with performing euthanasia, as necessary. Responsible for creating, reporting, monitoring, and updating medical and other pertinent information for each animal housed at the shelter.
Essential Functions of the Position:
• Administer morning and mid-day medications, as prescribed
• Observe shelter animals for any unusual symptom(s) that may be indicative of a medical or behavioral problem and report to the Clinic Manager and/or the Staff Veterinarian. May make recommendation for euthanasia based on medical condition, injury or animal’s disposition.
• Perform a daily walk through with the Staff Veterinarian to identify and/or monitor any health issues
• Report, monitor, and update medical information for each animal being treated
• Perform X-rays, SNAP tests and nebulize, when necessary
• Performs humane euthanasia, when required
• Maintain the confidentiality of all information regarding the animals in care
• Follow established procedures governing safe work practices; to perform duties in a manner which assures the safety of oneself and others
• Function calmly in situations that require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy
Knowledge, skill, and abilities needed to perform the Essential functions of this position:
• Minimum of 1 year hands on experience in animal husbandry, preferably in a veterinary environment
• Exceptional knowledge of Veterinary medicine
• Ability to quickly identify potential health issues
• Capability to educate the community on health issues that may affect animals within our care
• Excellent organization skills
• Ability to analyze processes for continuous rapid improvement
• Ability to work daily under stress and pressure
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Excellent interpersonal skills and flexibility in dealing with people
• Function calmly in situations that require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy

Qualification Requirements:
• Veterinary clinical experience required
• High School diploma or equivalent
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must have a clean driving record
• Able and willing to work weekends and holidays
Physical Demands:
• Frequently required to stand, sit, walk, run, jump, bend, twist, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to work in varying temperatures and climate change
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to noxious odors, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. Exposure to animal diseases and in the presence of injured, vicious, or frightened animals and potentially volatile situations which can present risk of violence or injury. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
