The Animal Shelter Society is an adoptable no-kill 100% non-profit brick and mortar organization. We average over 100 animals in our care daily. We have very strict cleaning practices & protocols along with strigent policies & procedures. We average 30-32 loads of laundry during the winter season each & every day. We have used washers/dryers donated throughout the year. This year, we have replaced 9 used washers & 5 dryers. This is what we do to save money. Two of our washers went down this weekend. We have a total of 8 sets running 7 days a week. On Friday morning, our large commercial hot water tank that supplies our entire shelter blew. It is being replaced Monday(not in budget). We need your help so we can continue to help the animals when others couldn’t or wouldn’t. We will accept your gently used washer/dryers or funding for them and/or the tankless hot water system. Please keep in mind - we are not funded by the city/county. Every expense is covered by donations & grants if applicable. We appreciate everyone who helps/supports us & believes in our mission. 🐾♥️

The Animal Shelter Society asks for a great deal of support from our community so we can continue to operate our 100% non-profit organization. Participating in community events is our way of saying “thank you”. Our Executive Director, staff members & volunteers braved the cold & participated in the Storybook Christmas Parade in downtown Zanesville this evening. It is great seeing the local businesses & non-profits come together for the lights & celebration. We do not hand out candy - it is dog biscuits from us. 🐾♥️

Note from Executive Director of ASSI

🐾♥️Animals are not adopted out as gifts🐾♥️

It is important to remind our supporters & community on our adoption process. The Animal Shelter Society, Inc., does not adopt out any animals as “gifts”. This includes birthdays, surprise’s and/or Christmas. Adopting an animal is a whole family decision and commitment for everyone involved. All family members must come in for the meet & greet. (No exceptions). Unfortunately - recently we had an adult mother misrepresent and bring another individual posing as her “teen” child as the animal was going to be a gift. It is very unfortunate that this happened and her application is now tagged with an attribute.

It is important that there is comfort for both the family members & especially our animal while being considered for adoption. The animal you think would be a good fit may not work out for either you or our animal. We encourage walk throughs and to speak with one of our kennel technicians Monday thru Friday 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm & Saturdays 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm (Closed. Tuesdays & for lunch noon-12:30 pm). You do not need to complete an application to come through our floors.

To adopt from us - The application must be completed thoroughly which includes court backgrounds, auditors check (must have copy of lease agreement if you rent) and have a veterinarian in place to accept the animal you are wanting to adopt. We contact the veterinarian to check that the animal you adopted is being kept up on vet care. (Part of contract). All of your animals you currently have must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines. If not, an appointment must be set to get things up to date. We make sure an older owned animal is not being discarded to adopt another.

You also must name someone who would be willing to take on the animal in case of your demise (this is goes for anyone 18 to 99 years of age). The same background checks will apply to them as well. If you have a dog(s) - they must be brought in for a meet and greet that is set up for appointment by our customer service team after the application is approved. Please note: this is not a same day process. Nor is the meet and greet just a few minutes. It is normally a 2-4 business day process to complete the application and the meetings/adoptions you want to allow at least an hour. The contract states that we can check on the animal after the adoption.

If any of this causes you any stress, discomfort and/or unsatisfaction - The Animal Shelter Society is not the “rescue” for you. There are plenty of animals in need throughout our community. We are not trying to find you the best animal - We are trying to find the best family for our animal. We take great pride in the care and treatment of our animals. We take it all very seriously. We have a strong commitment to these animals. We have stringent protocols, policies and procedures for all of their care. We do our best to make sure that the care will be kept up by the adopter.

Education is a big piece of our mission. This post is to remind everyone of what we do and how we do it.
The reason is simple - We care 🐾♥️

Much respect

🐾♥️ UPDATE 🐾♥️ Two (2) of our pups had great applications submitted with wonderful meet & greets completed with the future adopted family(s). They are now in their fur-ever homes & settling in for a long winter’s nap. We are forging through the applications for little Pecan & Nutmeg to find just the purr-fect family. We appreciate everyone stopping by, inquiring & having interest in these little pups that we worked diligently to raise until available for adoptions. They did not just show up this cute, cuddly & healthy. They are amazing & very appreciative 🐾♥️

When you think you’re the coolest at the news station … & then this cat shows up. Mr. Freddie loves visiting & educating on what The Animal Shelter Society does. Being a 100% non-profit organization is a true business & it takes a great deal of patience & hard work. Having Mr. Freddie, as an ambassador to the A. Shelter helps get the message out & lets us get through the day. We appreciate WHIZ & all that they do for us. We could not do what we do without their support & for them believing in our mission. Thank you !!! 🐾♥️

The Animal Shelter Society operates 7 days a week with staff averaging 6 hours a day or more. Today we had a total of 8 staff working & caring for our animals. We do this as a 100% non-profit organization which is a tremendous feat. The over 100 animals in our care do not understand that it is a holiday. They think everyday is a holiday because we have very strong protocols for their care which includes mental/physical activity. Our staff come in at minimum wage and gives excellent care & compassion to them.

We are thankful for our staff & our community. Always keep in mind - even if we have no customer service hours - we are caring for our animals everyday. They are our top priority. Happy Thanksgiving 🐾♥️

The Animal Shelter Society gives thanks for each of you who supports & believes in our mission.
