We absolutely love seeing Genesis Endoscopy staff. They have donation campaigns a couple times a year in memory of beautiful Jillian Chernick for our 100% non-profit. We are so very thankful that they keep her memory alive. Miss Jillian was a wonderful volunteer for our organization. Her love for “pitties” was so very appreciated. 🐾♥️

We are taking this time to educate. It is a long read but the 5 minutes it will take you to read - it will have a lasting impact. ♥️🐾

We would like to share with our community & supporters what The Animal Shelter Society experiences besides the day to day operation of the over 100 animals in our care. The sick, the scared, the confused, the homeless, the hungry, the injured and the surrendered just to name a few.

We received several animals on Friday of which several had injuries/sickness, aged & will require severe medical procedures. The animals were anywhere from babies to elderly.

We don’t pick & choose the young & cute or the ones who we would believe will easily be adopted. We take in what we can to assist & aide them. We take in the animals that need our help.

We took in a 5+ year old dog that the owner has had since a pup. The dog was confused horrifically & the owner sobbed as her living arrangements changed due to no fault of her own. We stepped up & took the dog in. It will take a great deal of care for this dog to adjust. When folks surrender - our long, tasking & exhausting care kicks in. It is much harder than anyone can even imagine.

One of the surrenders occured Friday at 3:55 pm with a mother and her young child who came in to surrender their feline due to not having a means to keep her because of living arrangements. The child was carrying the feline. The mother made the tough decision to live in their car and give the feline a great chance at life. Both of these family members were sobbing with tears running down their faces. My staff including my Administrative Assistant & Animal Care Manager did their very best to maintain what we were dealing with but it was too much. We are all humans & we have strong emotions for the animals we care for but are also sympathetic to many of the humans we have to interact with & assist.

Please remember that the Board of Directors & our staff does the very best that we can do as a 100% non-profit organization. We are extremely transparent in our day to day operations. We care deeply for the animals of our community & for the humans who care for them.

The decision has been made that we will care for this feline & hold for the family who had to surrender her to give them a bit of time to get their housing in order. I gave the mother many resources that are available in our caring & generous community.

Keep in mind that there are folks who are genuine & have to make tough decisions. There are also those individuals who could do better.

The emotional impact of an individual/family having to surrender their beloved pet due to not having a place to live or having to make the decision to move is profound & heartbreaking. It can be a very painful decision made out of desperation, & most often not out of lack of love or care for the animal. The individual /family often experiences a range of difficult emotions, including:

Grief & Loss: The animal is often considered a member of the family, & losing them feels like losing a loved one. This grief can be compounded by the circumstances surrounding the surrender.

Guilt & Shame: The family may feel guilty for not being able to provide for their pet & may blame themselves for the situation. They may also feel ashamed of their circumstances & the need to surrender their pet.

Helplessness & Despair: The family may feel hopeless & overwhelmed by their situation, unable to change their circumstances & keep their pet.

Anxiety & Stress: The uncertainty of the future & the fear of the unknown can add to the family's emotional burden.

Relief & Gratitude: While the decision to surrender their pet is difficult, it can also bring a sense of relief knowing that the animal will be safe & cared for. The two families that The Animal Shelter Society assisted yesterday stated they were very grateful for our help and support they received.

It's important to remember that the decision to surrender a pet is never easy, & the emotional impact can be long-lasting. It's crucial to offer compassion & understanding to families in this situation, & to support them in any way possible.

The family both kissed & told the feline that they loved her.

We are thankful you took the time to read this small education piece.

Thank you for your support & for believing in our mission. We truly appreciate each of you ♥️🐾

When you think you’re the coolest cat in the building & this guy shows up. Mr. Freddie Sr. had a great day visiting WHIZ AM1240 Radio with Brenda & shooting his commercial with Tom. Freddie was representing The Animal Shelter Society for the up coming holiday campaign for the Chamber of Commerce. He rocked being out seeing everyone. We are more than an adoption facility - we are a 100% non-profit who gets out into the community amongst those who supports us. Thank you all. 🐾♥️

Today, October 29th is National Cat Day. The Animal Shelter Society has three (3) amazing Feline Ambassadors as you enter into our 100% non-profit brick & mortar organization to greet you. Our Sr. Feline Ambassador, Mr. Onyx has greeted our guest/supporters going on 15 years. He relaxes a bit more in his gentler age. Freddie Sr. is the cool cat of the Feline Ambassadors. He does our commercials with Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce & visits schools/assisted living facilities. Freddie Jr. is new to the lobby but is doing a great job meeting everyone & getting acclimated. You could make your home a National Cat Day with an adoption from our organization. Visit our website: animalsheltersociety.org. or stop by Monday through Friday 12:30p-3:15pm to visit our felines available for adoption. Saturday 12:30p-2:15p. The Animal Shelter Society began a recognition program named “PAW-sitive Partners” back in 2021. This was put in place to recognize businesses & individuals who go above & beyond for our 100% non-profit organization. We have a large amount of PAW-sitive Partners already in place & several more to be recognized. Today we recognize local Artist, Mr. Jeff Shackelford. Each year, Jeff donates a piece from his collection & donations come into our organization from it. We are so very thankful for his support & for believing in our mission.🐾♥️

Today is a busy day here at The Animal Shelter Society. They adopted several of my “Man’s Best Friends” However, the intake department is taking in just as many. The boss lady is not happy with all of us just walking the streets. The staff is doing all they can. I’m a little scared but these folks are so very kind. The other dog who just got brought in just before me pooped in their kennel & the staff were on that like magic. Super clean here. Anyway —- send my hoomans to pick me up. Thank you 🐾♥️

Well - I decided I would go out trick or treating this morning without my hoomans. I wanted to get ahead of everyone else so I could get the best dog biscuits. I got lost in the mean time. If you could let my hoomans know I’m here at The Animal Shelter Society chillin - I’d appreciate it. It’s warm here and a really comfy bed but I’d like to go home. Have them call & ask for the Executive Director. Be nice when you call her at (740) 452-1077 because she gives me nice dog treats 🐾♥️

Having Specilized Volunteers be a part of The Animal Shelter Society is extremely important for the growth of our animals. They have specific duties which include socialization & handling of our dogs & felines. The volunteers go through an extensive orientation & guidance from our vet room staff & Executuve Director. We are very appreciative of these volunteers as they give a great amount of time, patience & understanding to our animals. Thank you for all you do to assist with our animals mental health, development & wellbeing. 🐾♥️
