Sierra Woods Farm

Sierra Woods Farm Sierra Woods Farm is a Hunter/Jumper facility that provides Boarding, Lessons, Training and Sales services to beginner through advanced riders in the Midwest.

We regularly compete in both the rated and local member Hunter/Jumper shows. Sierra Woods Farm was established in 2005 when Amy Tilson, owner and trainer, struck out on her own after years of working for top trainers Wendy Newby and Tammy Provost. A veteran of the Hunter Jumper world, Amy and her assistant trainers sought to build a business and farm environment that was as enjoyable as it was com

petitive. Sierra Woods has accomplished that goal with stabling for over 40 horses and a very active lesson and showing program. Our horses enjoy outstanding care, regular turnout and a heated facility in the winter. Our riders enjoy a facility that accommodates beginners as young as 5 years old to advanced riders with showing goals. Our showing schedule includes rated and unrated shows throughout the Midwest and the Florida circuit in the winter. Our structured programs include everything from clinics with top visiting professionals to beginner and adult camps. Our facility was designed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for our friends and their horses. We hope that you enjoy the photos below and stop by next time you are in the area.

Maureen McIlhany and Borasco were reserve champion in the 0.90 jumpers! Maureen and Newcastle also had great trips in the 0.65 jumpers.

Sarah Gould and Nickelback had great trips in the USHJA 3’ and Adult hunters!

Amy Ochoa and Corallo J had lovely rounds and ribbons in the 3’3” performance!

Charlotte Mould and Rush Hour were reserve champion in the children’s equitation, and won multiple over fences and the flat of the limit equitation!

Great job everyone!

We are lucky to have several incredible farriers come and work in our barn. One of which, Ann Meier Griffin, was recently in an accident that will have her out of work. Please consider sharing or supporting Ann as her family tries to cover everything during her recovery!

Unlike many professions, an equine professional’s physical health is imperative to paying the bills. We are grateful social media gives us a chance to support our fellow horse people!

Never too late to celebrate all of our horses and riders and all of their success at Kentucky Spring! Our first outdoor show of the year was a great time. Some highlights include: Grace Schubert & Boris de Bruz hitting it off and finishing reserve champions in the 0.9 Int Child / Adult Jumpers their first show together, Maggie White and Chinchilla finishing 2nd in the older THIS, Sarah Gould and Rush Hour’s successes - especially in the Ariat Adult Medal!

Those highlights don’t even sum up the fun we had at the horse park! Great job everyone, we are excited for a great summer 🦄🎉

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Our lesson horses are the foundation for our program, and admittedly we previously put any saddle on any horse if the saddle looked okay to our untrained eyes. Anyone who has a lesson program knows what it’s like trying to care for and maintain 10+ lesson horses - you do the best you can with what you have to take care of the lesson horses that are worth their weight in gold.

Recently we have been learning about saddle fitting - the complexities, the importance, the harmful impacts a poor fitting saddle has, and the positive impacts a correctly fitted saddle has on the horse. Gina Pletch of Pletch Eventing and Saddle Fitting is one of America’s best independent saddle fitters, and she spent hours yesterday going through our lesson saddles, available half pads, and worked with each lesson horse to find the right saddle fit for each individual horse. We are so grateful to Gina, her expertise is invaluable! We cannot wait to see how our lesson horses go when wearing saddles that fit them consistently.

It can be overwhelming trying to imagine how to fit saddles to a barn full of lesson horses, and the prospect of buying all new saddles terrifying. Gina understands lesson programs, and she did not come to try and sell us a barn full of new saddles. She worked with what we had, cut up old half pads, and went above and beyond trying to find an existing fit for every horse. There were only 2-3 horses that Gina could not find an ideal fit for, and she gave us options to work with until we are able to get each horse their own saddle that fits them. We have some long term goals of securing well fit saddles for each and every lesson horse!

We used to primarily pick saddles for horses based on the rider, unintentionally prioritizing rider comfort over the comfort of the horse. When you know better, you can do better! Thank you Gina for teaching us and helping us so we can do better for our lesson horses! 🦄💕

A few reminders as we come into the warmer weather:

We do have a dress code. Riders should come to lessons with a shirt that is tucked in, a belt is preferred. We do not allow tank tops that reveal bra straps, we do not allow low-cut tops, and we do not allow crop tops. We also ask that your shirt not be a sheer/see-through material.

Please also note: taking multiple water breaks during a half hour or one hour lesson can become disruptive. If you have a medical condition that requires you to drink water every five minutes, please let us know, otherwise please hydrate without causing a scene and get back to the lesson.

Please remember to pick up manure and sweep up the aisle after you are done grooming and tacking and again after you are finished with your horse for the day.

And finally, a reminder that horses are assigned based on rider ability, and the safety of both horse and rider are always considered when making horse assignments. You cannot reserve your favorite lesson horse. You can, however, pay to lease them, which would give you first dibs.
