Do you know the difference between round and square bales of hay?

Round bales are placed in the pastures during winter to give the horses proper forage when there’s no longer grass to graze on.

Square bales separate in to flakes, which are given to the horses in their stalls throughout the day or night.

Ever wonder if the cost of board or horse lessons is fair? Honestly, it’s probably not. You’re not just paying for the stall or minimum daily care. You’re not just paying for the 45 minute lesson. Without the around the clock management and preparation, you wouldn’t have access to the horses or barn in the first place.

It’s the day in and day out, 365. The 1 hour minimum/horse/day. No A/C in 100 degrees, sawdust and hay stuck to your sweaty skin. Working around flies, fly masks on horses, cold hosing, setting up fans and night turnout. Scrubbing algae out of troughs and cobwebbing the barn. Slugging through mud and picking hooves at bring in. Extra stall picking because it’s too wet for the horses to go out safely. Stressing and counting and recounting hay supply. Blisters that turn to calluses that are forever a part of your hands and feet. Wrapping, hand walking, soaking abscesses, administering medication. Hauling bedding bags and manure buckets and bales of hay. Vet visits, phone calls on “vacation”, and never going a day without communication and oversight. Freezing temperatures, breaking ice buckets, hand warmers and coveralls. Blanketing, frozen hoses, hauling warm water from the house. Night checks, round bales, warm mash to keep them happy. Cleaning tack, jumping tractors, mending fences. Fertilizing pastures, farrier appointments, supply runs. Lunging, exercising, to keep them sound and safe. Liability coverage, horse insurance. Taking the baby because chores still have to be done. Sacrificing free time, family time, travel. Running through the to do list when trying to go to sleep…did I close the barn doors? Did I turn the hose off? Did I wrap that wound wrap too tight? Being sick but still showing up. Getting stepped on, rope burn, thrown off…and not skipping a beat. No maternity leave, no health insurance, no PTO. It’s the things we do for them that most people will never see.

Meet instructor, Nicole!

Nicole was introduced to horseback riding at a young age and found herself back in the saddle when she went off to college. She is currently getting her Doctorate in occupational therapy at the University of Indianapolis and has a passion for animal assisted therapies. She has worked in various barn settings that implement aspects of therapeutic riding and hippotherapy into their sessions. Nicole’s passion for the human-animal connection stems from both personal and professional experiences that has led her to where she is today.

Meet instructor, Emma!

Emma began riding at age three and horses quickly became a constant in her life. She showed on the hunter/jumper circuit through high school, where she had the opportunity to ride many horses and learn from many talented trainers. She has managed equine departments and programs at hippotherapy and therapeutic riding facilities, and now own and runs Cornerstone Equestrian Services. She enjoys instructing through the life span, helping others reach personal goals utilizing horses. With her M.S. in Gerontology, she strives to serve the geriatric community via horse power. She personally trains Cornerstone’s horses to be versatile and ready for riders with unique needs.🐴

A little sneak peek at the first day of Winter Wonders 2024/2025! We had a wintery mix just in time, which made the hot cocoa especially tasty and the barn extra cozy! 🐴❄️☺️ 8 kiddos joined us for horse care and self care. Boys turnout ☺️ Our geldings (castrated made horses) all go out together. They have their best buddies, and usually break off in pairs after all saying “hello” to the group. We love watching them stretch their legs, socialize and graze. Maverick, Conan, Music, Charlie, Chewy, Ranger and Denny 🐴
