Learning to steer and use your reins as an appropriate tool takes practice and patience!

Until riders are advanced in this skill, and can balance without over compensating with their hands/reins, our horses work in “working halters”. Meaning, they do not have bits in their mouth, and rely only on a little pressure on their nose. It’s also important to understand your horse will stop, go, and steer by listening to the riders voice, eyes, and other aids.

Groundwork is effective. During this session, we used different terrain on the farm (grass, gravel, soft sand, pavement) to improve mobility and balance of walking gait. Navigating different terrain builds confidence and strength. 🚶🏻‍♀️🐴

Two-point position: riders knees and stirrups are the point of contact on the horse. Two-point allows the horse to move more freely at the canter, gallop, or when jumping, improves rider balance and versatility in the saddle, and increases harmony with horse and rider.

If your kiddo is learning to ride a bike, two-point is the exercise that will excel their bike riding skills! 🚲🐴

🐴 Horse leaders are individuals with horse experience who assist by grooming, leading horse during the lesson and untacking.

🚶🏻‍♀️🚶Side walkers are individuals who assist with rider safety and various exercises throughout a lesson.

Today we listened to our bodies and switched things up. This rider requested to walk in the sand, so we snagged another lead rope and taught him how to lead Coco. Clinical Exercise Physiology at the farm?! Yes! In our opinion, it’s the best environment to work towards physical goals and gains 💪🚶🏻‍♀️ We have a certified personal trainer who also has their MS in Clinical Exercise Physiology 📚🤗 Here’s what we are working on in this clients session⬇️ 🪣🧑‍🌾Farmers carries and asymmetrical loading targets balance and strengthening of walking gait and core. 🐴The core trainer helps us motor plan mounting and dismounting the horse, engage posture, challenge balance, increase range of motion and hip mobility. Working *with* your horse. 🐴 It’s all about establishing a relationship. 💕 You don’t need a lead rope for your horse to listen to you. They want to listen. They want to connect. At the end, Music could have walked away or shifted his focus. Instead, he waits for me and what’s next. Treats help 😋😆

Scooping poop, despite popular opinion, CAN be fun. 💩 Like many things in life, it can also serve lots of different functions. ESPECIALLY for kids that struggle with delays in motor skill function. For many, it can actually provide a huge sense of accomplishment and autonomy. Pro tip: It’s also a great way to sneak in some vestibular input.
