The Shih Tzu is a beloved toy breed with a rich history and a personality that wins over just about everyone they meet. Originating in China, these dogs were bred as royal lap warmers, specifically for the Chinese nobility, and their name translates to "lion dog," reflecting their dignified and slightly aloof yet affectionate nature. Shih Tzus have a distinctive appearance characterized by their luxurious, long, double coat that requires regular grooming to keep it looking its best, as well as their flat face, which gives them their adorable, expressive look. Despite their glamorous appearance, Shih Tzus are sturdy little dogs with a surprisingly playful and spirited attitude.

These dogs are friendly, outgoing, and often described as affectionate "house dogs" that bond deeply with their families. They are great with children and other pets, making them excellent companions in multi-pet households. Shih Tzus are generally not overly energetic but enjoy short play sessions and walks, making them well-suited for apartment living or homes with smaller yards. They are intelligent but can be a bit stubborn, so early socialization and gentle, consistent training are essential. Overall, the Shih Tzu’s loving, friendly demeanor combined with their beautiful, eye-catching appearance makes them a delightful and cherished pet for many families.

Protection training is a specialized form of dog training that focuses on teaching a dog to protect its owner or property while maintaining control and obedience. It’s essential that this type of training is done correctly to ensure the dog can distinguish between real threats and everyday situations.

Here’s a basic overview of what protection training involves:

1. Temperament Evaluation
Not all dogs are suitable for protection training. The dog’s temperament, breed, and natural instincts are evaluated to ensure they are appropriate candidates.

2. Obedience Foundation
Before any protection work begins, the dog must have a strong obedience foundation. This includes commands like sit, stay, come, and heel, ensuring the dog is under control at all times.

3. Bite Work Training
The dog is trained to bite on command, targeting specific areas such as an arm or leg. This is usually done with the help of a decoy wearing protective gear.

4. Alertness and Guarding
The dog is trained to recognize and alert its owner to potential threats. This could be through barking or standing in a defensive posture.

5. Controlled Aggression
The dog learns to control its aggression, only acting on command or when a real threat is present. This is crucial to ensure the dog does not become overly aggressive or pose a danger to others.

6. Scenario Training
The dog is put through real-life scenarios, such as home invasion simulations, to practice its protection skills in a controlled environment.

7. Maintenance Training
Protection training is not a one-time event; it requires ongoing practice and reinforcement to ensure the dog retains its skills.

These are indeed some classic signs that a dog is affectionate and bonded with their owner. Here’s a bit more detail on each one:

Eye Contact: When a dog gazes into your eyes, it’s a sign of trust and affection. Prolonged eye contact can release oxytocin, the "love hormone," in both the dog and the human.

Jumping on You: While this behavior might be seen as a bit over-enthusiastic, it’s often a sign of excitement and happiness to see you.

Showing Their Belly: When a dog rolls over and exposes its belly, it’s a sign of trust and submission. They feel safe around you and are showing vulnerability.

Following You Everywhere: Dogs are pack animals by nature, and following you around shows that they see you as their leader and want to be close to you.

Sleeping Next to You: Sleeping near you is a sign that your dog feels secure and comfortable in your presence. They see you as part of their pack.

Licking Your Face: This is a grooming behavior and a way for dogs to show affection. It’s also a way for them to say, "I love you!" in their own way.

These behaviors are all great indicators of a strong bond between you and your dog.
