Dr. Jane Hinton was one of the two first African American women to graduate with a VMD degree (Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb was the other). Before them, there had only been 4 other VMD graduates, and it wasn’t until almost 20 years later until there was another. Dr. Hinton paved the way for women not just in veterinary medicine, but all medicine. Through her father, a Harvard Medical School professor and, according to a piece on BlackPastby Hilda Bastian, “one of the most prominent African American medical researchers of his era,” Dr. Hinton had the opportunity to work as a lab assistant to John Howard Mueller.

Ultimately, she helped to develop the Mueller-Hinton agar, “a culture medium in which bacteria can thrive. It has become one of the standard methods used to test bacterial resistance to antibiotics,” Bastian notes. After graduating from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Hinton became a veterinarian in small animal medicine, as well as a federal government inspector for the Department of Agriculture, where she helped progress research and response to livestock disease outbreaks. She had an early retirement and spent the rest of her days caring for her garden and household pets.

Do you recognize this dog?? This dog was tied to the post next to the Barbershop in Princesse for over 2 weeks, when their staff noticed it and someone notified the shop owner. The shop owner asked around, but no one knew who the pup belonged to. This two year old male weighs 30 pounds. He is on a five day stray hold while we look for his owner.

Dr. Wendell O. Belfield was a veterinary doctor and pioneer in promoting wholesome foods for pets. He had a successful veterinary practice in San Jose, California, where he dedicated his professional life to improving orthomolecular therapies for small animals.

Dr. Belfield’s clinical knowledge served as the catalyst for enhanced nutritional products, successfully addressing ineffective conventional treatment protocols for many animal diseases. Through trial and error, he developed combinations of nutrients that are indicated for specific disease processes, and conducted research to establish the efficacy of his treatments.

Dr. Belfield's original formulas are still available at Orthomolecular Specialties (OMS).

In March, SCAWC will be adding a high-volume spay/neuter relief veterinarian to the team from March 1st - March 15th. In order to take advantage of Dr. Almengual’s incredible skills, and to spay/neuter as many animals as possible, SCAWC is offering 50% off ALL spay/neuter surgery for the first two weeks of March!

Schedule your appointment HERE: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScVH8_WUHw-vaO0hdAys90DgnXad3jJyuQXeDIaqYDWwUTflQ/viewform?usp=sharing

BUT WAIT! Some extremely generous donors who volunteered at last month's four-day free spay/neuter event and wanted to make a big difference for the pet and feral population on St. Croix. They contacted SCAWC and offered to MATCH up to $4,000 in spay/neuter donations to cover the cost of spay/neuter for STRAY AND FERAL animals, and for pet owners in financial need.

The public response to this donation match has been wonderful! So far SCAWC has raised around $2,000 for spay/neuter surgeries! We are so close to the finish line on this matching donation, but we need your help! You can double your impact today by donating to SCAWC's spay/neuter program. Just click that donate button below!

Patricia (Pat) M. Lowrie is the director of the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) at Michigan State University and also serves as the assistant to the dean in the College of Veterinary Medicine. As WRC director, she leads a staff in developing and implementing educational, leadership, social justice, and advocacy programs. The Center serves as a focus for coordinating resources and referrals that catalyze institutional change through understanding and valuing difference and empowering faculty, students, and staff to be effective change agents.

In veterinary medicine, Pat’s role is to enhance and increase educational and professional opportunities for underrepresented groups in the health professions. As part of a collaborative broad-based university team, she also advises university leadership on effective methods to engage various constituent groups in synergistic activity that moves beyond anti-discrimination teachings and begins to infuse social justice education more comprehensively into the institution. This team collectively addresses the issues of individuals who are members of oppressed groups, including persons with disabilities and persons who are historically victims of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia.

A graduate of Howard University, she is the recipient of several awards, including the University Diversity Award and the All-University Distinguished Academic Staff Award. Pat chairs the executive committee of Campus Women Lead, an affiliate of AAC&U’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Global Initiatives and the Project on the Status and Education of Women.
