Us humans are a little obsessed with it, aren’t we.
It gives us some sense of security and control when our dog sits…
And don’t get me wrong, it can be a handy behaviour, but please don’t make it part of all the other behaviours you teach your dog (like a ‘wait’ and it’s not a wait until the dog sits as well).
You’ll thank me later 😉

Here are some tips to help your furry friend adjust to being happy home alone again after your summer holidays.

And we’d love to hear about your stories and how you, if you need to, help your pup to get back into the post-holiday routine.

✅ Start small: begin by leaving your dog alone for just a few minutes (seconds, if needed) at a time. Gradually increase the duration over days (work at your dog’s pace!). If your dog isn’t quite ready yet for you to head out for a few hours, get a dog sitter/ walker to break up the day. For those of you who have been working through a separation anxiety training programme, start with your dog’s $100 time (super easy win!) and build from there.

✅ Have their safe space ready and establish a routine (again): a designated area in your home where your dog feels secure (ideally have them choose it). This could be a bed in a quiet corner, your sofa or bed or a room of their own. Soothing backgrounds sounds will help you dog rest peacefully.

✅ Meet your dog’s needs, both physically and mentally: a well-exercised dog (appropriate to your dog’s age, breed, energy levels, health) is more likely to rest while you’re gone. Calming mental engagement (puzzle toys, natural chews, positive reinforcement training with you) is an absolute must!

If you need help with your dog’s separation related problems, please get in touch by booking a free Zoom consult or contact me via details in bio.

How to stop your dog from pancaking (when they spot another dog).

One of my online clients in America has been struggling with her (most gorgeous) Labrador going flat out unmovable whenever she would spot another dog.

She isn’t fearful of other dogs, she just wanted to say Hi (so so badly) and whereas our dogs should have play time with other dogs (if they want to!), that’s not always quite so practical when we are out walking with our fur friends (due to a variety of reasons).

So here is what we did:

✅ At home/ away from any distractions, we conditioned her to a pattern game (123 & treat THANK YOU, LESLIE MCDEVITT!!!).

✅ We found a couple of good locations where we knew there would be dogs and where we could train at a distance to these dogs passing (this is an important part of the training, ensure your dog stays under threshold!).

✅ When she set eyes on another dog (at that set distance), we would start to count, which would make her swivel round to her human (treats, well done gorgeous girl).

💪 After plenty of reps, another dog became a cue to swivel round to her human (treat please). Resulting in her stopping the pancaking and instead engaging with her wonderful human.

🌟 Ethics in dog care are essential to ensure the health, happiness, and overall well-being of our canine companions. 🌟

💜 Ethical care practices - from breeding to training to veterinary care - should always prioritise the physical, mental, and emotional needs of dogs, upholding principles that not only enhance the quality of life for dogs but also strengthens the bond between dogs and their human families.

🤓 From working with the right dog trainer to who is involved with looking after your dog; it’s important that you do your research and ensure everyone adheres to these standards.

👋 I’d love to know what your basics/ standards are and how you went about finding the right people to ensure your dog is happy, healthy and fulfilled.

SEPARATION ANXIETY TRAINING TIPS!!

One of the key components of helping your dog overcome the fear of being home alone is to ensure you don’t leave them for longer than they can happily manage.

And to do this, you need to spot the early and subtle stress signals, one of which being a ‘snappy’ yawn, often followed by a lip lick.

Have a look through my previous posts or more information on subtle stress signs and get in touch if you need help - contact info in bio.

SEPARATION ANXIETY TRAINING TIPS

Not only are certain types of (background) sounds calming for dogs, it will also help to block out potential outside noises that can be triggering for your dog during their absence training.

Here are some of the sounds I’ve used for my clients’ training programmes:
✅ classical music
✅ reggae
✅ white noise
✅ mediation sounds
✅ bedtime story podcasts

➡️ Firstly, simply putting your dog in a crate, if your dog struggles to be home alone, will not solve the problem.

➡️ To even consider an escape proof crate is NOT the way to go about this.

➡️ If someone, especially a dog trainer, suggests this to you, RUN!! Please remember, this industry is not regulated, anyone can call themselves a dog trainer/ behaviourist/ specialist and so forth.

❤️ I understand that having a dog with separation related issues can be very stressful and you may feel like you’ve run out of options.
But there is a gentle and science based method that has helped thousands of dogs overcome their fear of being home alone.

And if you need help, please get in touch. And have a look at my previous posts for plenty of tips and tricks that will hopefully help you and your dog to get started with your separation anxiety training journey.

If you are stuck with a four-legged velcro buddy, teach your dog that good things happen when they are relaxing on a specific station (bed, mat, blanket, etc) with you in or out of sight.

This helps your dog to associate good feelings with being away from you, building confidence and calmness around being on their own, which is often a first step, or goes alongside other initial training steps, within a separation anxiety training programme.

✅ Your first goal for this exercise is to teach your dog that a ‘down’ on the station means good things happen.

How to - the basics ⬇️

➡️ Choose a station that you use solely for this training exercise and arm yourself with plenty of delicious treats (pea size, ideally).

➡️ You can choose to associate a verbal cue with the behaviour (I.e. ‘go to mat’) or simply have the station itself (being placed on the floor) as an environmental cue to go and settle on it.

🤓 Assessing your dog’s progress during the exercises
👍 If your dog aces it 4 - 5 times out of 5 repetitions, you are ready to tackle the next step.
👍 3 out of 5, practice the current level a little more.
👍 If your dog aces it only 1 or 2 times out of 5, drop back to the previous level, making it easier for your dog to succeed and avoiding frustration from building.
You want your dog to LOVE this exercise!!!!

🐕👋 leave a comment if you want to receive step by step training guidelines to train this behaviour.

Online (or remote) behavioural support training works very well for so many different dog training and behavioural support needs.
After all, it’s the dog’s human who has to do the training regularly and us dog trainers teaching them how to not only work on / train specific behaviours but also how to set up the right learning environment for their dog, understand their needs and how to cater to these and much more.

A few of my clients’ messages and reviews, which I cherish very much.
Each single one of them.
With everything I do, I want to put the relationship between the dog and human at the forefront. Everything else flows from there.
I guess you can call it relationship-based training.

Build a strong bond based on trust and a mutual understanding, and make it manageable for the human caregiver to handle the every day tasks.

If you need help with your furry companion, may that be puppy training or behavioural support training, please get in touch.

Sharing a message I’ve received from a client who’s previously worked with a balanced trainer.
Unfortunately the result of the previous approach was that this little fur boy got very stressed and started reacting badly to his humans.
A gentle and kind approach based on understanding his needs and what he is communicating with us has brought immediate change with his behaviours.
Some of it is still a work in progress, of course and to be expected, and his humans are 100% dedicated to the process 💪🎉

Huge separation anxiety training success for our little terrier friend 🎉🎉🎉

He’s not only succeeding at his happy home alone training (3 hours plus now 💪) but has also recently proofed that he’s generally grown in confidence and has generalised the feeling of safety when alone, by settling home alone in a completely new environment (while on holiday with his humans).

He was of course carefully monitored by his incredibly dedicated humans (who were able to enjoy that very well deserved cocktail in the sun without canine companionship).

Couldn’t be happier for both our four-legged friend and his people for improving their quality of live all round.

Working with adolescent dogs is a wonderful, and also often challenging, training category on its own!

The key to the kingdom is to help the human understand what their dog can and cannot offer at this developmental stage.

Patience and managing the dog’s environment is a large part of it, while continuing to reinforce the right behaviours and provide outlets for what your dog needs during this tumultuous time (we’ve all been there after all, I know I have…..sorry Mum…).

If you need help with your teenage dog, I offer an ‘adolescent dog survival’ training programme to help you and your dog navigate this developmental stage. Get in touch, link in bio 😘

Is the constant worry about leaving your dog home alone wearing you down? Have you tried everything and anything and are left confused with all the conflicting information out there?

I know what it feels like! My precious golden girl, little Miss Wolfgang, developed separation anxiety after moving with me to a new home (well, to a new country).

It took dedication and a tailored approach to get her back to her happy place and I understand how restrictive, stressful and heartbreaking it can be to live with a dog who suffers with separation related problems.

I help dogs overcome their fear of being home alone (and help their humans get social and worry-free again) with tailored 121 coaching programmes, using tried and tested methods that have helped thousands of dogs with their separation related issues.

I have a limited amount of space opened up for this month’s Separation Anxiety Coaching Programmes which include simple, effective, daily training exercises delivered via an app, unlimited support via messenger and regular coaching calls to support you and your dog along the way to separation anxiety training success.

For a rock solid recall add some fun and variation
- Vary the rewards (food, toys, play)
- Vary how you deliver the rewards (throw a food treat to ‘go find’, have the dog catch the treat, whisk a tug toy out and more)
- Vary the cues: from your recall cue to other cues na behaviours that make your dog come back to you, such as a hand target (touch), Middle, running through your legs, pattern games like 123&treat, etc

06/02/2024

1️⃣ A lot of dogs won’t eat the food as they are too anxious being home alone.

2️⃣ You risk the food becoming a pre-departure cue if you haven’t yet taught your dog that being home alone is ok. So the food (Kong, lickimat, etc) becomes a scary predictor of you leaving.

3️⃣ Some dogs may be just be temporarily distracted by the food and once the food is gone, the dog gets anxious. And this won’t allow you to assess how long your dog is actually able to be comfortably be home alone for.

If you would like to find out more about how my separation anxiety training works, please visit my website where you can also download the free e-book with more information.
