Training your dog to have patience can sometimes feel challenging if you are only focusing on distance. However with this method you are able to introduce the concept of impulse training and patients with little to no distance and all you need is a dog bed. The goal is to start with no distance and making sure to help your dog understand that doing nothing is actually what they are going to get rewarded for. A pro tip is to make sure that you always return to your dog for the reward to ensure your dog will trust you to come back. With more success you can begin to add distance little by little with one step at a time. Follow to train the human so your dog can learn to! # # # # # # # # # #

I used to think a “good” dog owner was one who constantly provided enrichment, puzzle toys, sniffaris, lick mats, structured play, decompression walks, scent work, treadmill sessions, flirt poles, training drills… the list goes on.

And don’t get me wrong, enrichment is great!
Dogs thrive when their needs are met in fulfilling ways. But somewhere along the way, it feels like enrichment became a requirement for a dog to simply exist peacefully.

The more I’ve worked with high-energy dogs over the years, the more I saw a pattern: dogs that were constantly being “enriched” were often the ones that couldn’t settle.

I once worked with a dog whose owner had a strict routine:
🐾 Morning sniffari + puzzle feeder
🐾 Afternoon treadmill session + training games
🐾 Evening flirt pole + frozen lick mat
🐾 Late-night decompression walk

On paper, it looked like this dog was living the DREAM, constant mental stimulation, structured outlets, a dedicated owner.

But here’s the catch:

🚨The moment there wasn’t something to do, the dog fell apart.

He paced, whined, demand-barked, chewed on furniture, and frantically sought out more.
He had learned to expect constant engagement, and when that wasn’t provided, he didn’t know how to just be.

The Missing Piece: An Off Switch

Dogs don’t just need enrichment.
They need balance.
They need the ability to engage and disengage.
To switch on for an activity and then switch off when it’s time to rest.

More Isn’t Always Better…Balance Is!

Enrichment is valuable.
Movement is necessary.
But if your dog can’t relax without it,
there’s a bigger issue.

The most well-balanced dogs aren’t the ones getting non-stop engagement, they’re the ones who know how to enjoy activity AND how to turn off when needed.

So if you’re feeling pressured to constantly provide more, ask yourself:
Does my dog really need another activity?
Or do they need to learn how to be okay with less?

🐕‍🦺If your dog struggles to switch off,
I can help. Let’s bring back balance.🖤
