With summer temperatures soaring dehydration can be a real risk.

Please remember:
- NEVER leave your dog in a hot car. Even a few minutes in a hot car can be deadly.
- Make sure your dog has access to fresh water and shade when outdoors.
- Avoid walking or other strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day (typically between 11am and 3pm).
- Keep any eye out for any of the following signs of dehydration in your dog. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

If you notice any of these symptoms call your vet and encourage your dog to drink small amounts of water every few minutes.

We all love some good summer fun but the heat can post some serious risks for us and our dogs if we’re not careful. Hydration is extremely important for humans and canines alike. Do you know the signs of dehydration in dogs? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
- loss of consciousness/lethargy
- thick saliva
- excessive panting
- vomiting/diarrhea
- dry nose/tongue
- loss of appetite
- dark/concentrated urine
- body/feet feel hot to the touch
- infrequent or complete lack of urination

If you notice one or more of these signs contact your vet for further information. If symptoms are mild, you can offer your dog small amounts of water every few minutes as well as moving them to a cool place out of the heat and sun.

Always speak to your vet if you feel your dog’s health is at risk.

Since it’s Earth Day, we wanted to take a moment to talk about the little things we dog owners do to help the environment.

True or false: we pick up after our pet because it’s unsightly and we don’t want people don’t step in it but it is actually biodegradable and not harmful to the environment.

FALSE!

In fact, most animal waste is extremely nitrogen-rich. This can burn grass and and contaminate waterways with bacteria and even deplete oxygen in the water which hurts fish and wildlife. Not to mention, no one wants to step in it.

Bagging your pet’s waste is always a good idea but did you know that some plastic p**p bags can take over 1000 years to degrade and even then, they don’t break down completely. When they degrade they break down into micro plastics which continue to pollute the environment.

Using biodegradable bags is always a better option but even these may still take a few years to break down fully without the right conditions.

If you’d like to avoid sending your pet’s waste to a landfill here are a few earth-friendly options:

1) Flushing (without the bag…even if it says flushable! - be sure to check with your municipal waste management department before you do this. Generally dog waste can be disposed of this way but please don’t flush cat litter!

2) Green Bins - Check if your area has a green bin collection program. Many of these programs will collect everything from kitchen scraps to yard waste and even pet waste FOR FREE!

3)Compost it - if you’re a knowledgeable composter you can turn your pet waste into compost and you can even find dog p**p compost bins sold in some stores! Before you try this option though, make sure you learn about effective treatment temperatures and pathogen-testing first!

4) Pet waste collection services - Yep you heard right…there are companies that will come and collect your pet’s waste! Some municipalities have this built into their waste management services but many areas that do do have private collection companies. Do some research to make sure they don’t simply take it to a landfill. Some companies work with sewage processing plants to dispose of it.

We happy to share our Breed Feature for April! The beautiful, caring, and intelligent Hungarian Vizsla.

Vizslas belong to the sporting group. They are highly intelligent which means they’re easy to train. Their intelligence thought means they need lots of enrichment and require a good amount of daily exercise.

They LOVE being with people and are loyal and lively companions. They are also affectionate and gentle which makes them exceptional family dogs and excellent with children.

If you are considering adding a Vizsla to your family know that you are getting a loyal and affectionate dog that will want to be with you and go where you go. However they are best for those with an active lifestyle as they will need 1-2 hours of exercise. They’d love to join you on a run or a hike in a place that has lots of interesting places to explore and smell.

Did you know Vizslas are excellent swimmers? They actually have webbed feet! Swimming is a great way to let them burn off that extra energy!
