Everyone meet Hector previously Kane. Hector is a Maremma and is stepping into his job well. We got him to guard some of the flock as we have had a heavy increase in coyote activitiy and cougar sightings.

Ive always wanted a Maremma and Ellen always wanted a polar bear and it seems we have gotten both with this guy! Very easy going and willing to move around with our busy life. Thanks to Hillary Foster at wild critter ranch For a wonderful dog and working with us to get a great fit for our needs!

Thats how (insert here) used to do it.

I had a good long chat with a mentor recently about this attitude. We often use this as a justification when someone brings up a question as to why we do something in life.

This isn't inherently a bad thing. But we should question if its still worth doing. Simply becuase an authority in your life does something doesn't mean that it's worth repeating. Ask your self important questions like is this helpful? Is this getting results I like? Is this allowing me to behave in a way I want to behave? Most importantly is this something I should show others or is it something I should let go of.

Its ok to look inwardly and ask is your training or even attitude towards dogs and livestock what you want it to be? If not do something to change. Be humble about this change and understanding it will take time to recondition yourself.

Unrelated this is Logan with Josh a new to us dog we had the privilege to be able to get recently! Hes a very neat dog and we are excited for Logan to have a dog that has some training on him !

Being professional does not mean being perfect.

This is a term we hear in a wide variety of scenarios. Weather it be dog training, day to day work, or just the way we present our selves and animals being professional is important. But it often gets confused with perfection on the first attempt.

Being professional goes deeper than perfection because we as people are imperfect. Its more obvious someone is professional by the way they handle inevitable screw ups.

One way we can present this as dog handlers/trainers is humilty and understanding when we have made a mistake. We dont need to be perfect the first time or everytime but when we are wrong we should be dedicated to making it right. Being humble and accepting our faults with our dogs or other handlers is the first step. The second part is recognizing our failure and educating our selves to help avoid the same mistakes in the future.

A prime example is putting undo pressure on a young dog on a task they arnt ready for. We need to recognize we put them in a place they weren't ready for and we weren't ready to get them through. Then we educate ourselves on those circumstances and how to recognize when a dog isn't quite ready. Doing these things help you be professional in your own training.

Remember to enjoy the dog.

We often get caught up in wanting more and more from our dogs. While I dont believe its wrong to want to achieve more from things we are passionate about we need to be cautious of our ambitions overriding our enjoyment. Take time to enjoy your dog. Be thankful it easily achieves task that, without it would be substantial. Be happy you are training and glad you have a bond with a creature that's loves what its doing.

A partnership with a dog means alot when it comes to enjoyment. This is easy to loose sight of when we have 5 to 10 dogs we are working and trying to achieve stuff with. But I find it best to take one dog out a time just for a walk or tug or something that particular dog enjoys. It seems spending even just a little bit of 1 on 1 outside of the work pens gives them that feeling of being a special dog.

Just because you want to help, doesn't mean you are helping.

This is something that never feels good to hear but is crucial for any dog trainer to realize. The dog doesn't know your intentions, it knows what your communicating. This can be a very hard thing to realize for many trainers my self included. We need to make sure when we are working with a dog, especially on something new we are communicating with them properly. We often get stuck behind the desire to help the dog but forget we sometimes dont know how. Thats ok talk to other trainers seek help from people with experience in that category you are trying to over come. Read books, watch trials and videos of your works as well as other peoples. Try to find what you are doing that isn't communicating your desired outcome and adapt to make it clearer to the dog.

The key is reminding ourselves our intentions are not always what our actions are showing the dog. This requires self reflection as well as knowledgeable people around you to help point out flaws in your training. But please before you respond to those people pointing out the flaws with "well im trying to help the dog!" Think about what they are saying and see if it helps you. Its easy to shut down dogs as well as other handlers who are trying to help by being stubborn and not gracious when you need help.

Crating ia crucial! For much of the herding dog world this is old news but for some people it is not. Its crucial a dog know how to be comfortably confined. This is something we do for all of our dogs but its made very clear its importance when we have ones like Utah! Excellent worker that he is he still has lots of energy and ambition to play and run. He developed a bit of a soar back leg last week. If he was not trained and taught already a crate is a good comfortable place to relax and heal we would be in a world of annoying and likely painful for him, due to injury teaching and training.

Often the words from a veterinary professional "crate rest" are met with shock and horror by many many patients. Sputtering about it being impossible or more dangerous as if it is a potential death sentence to have your dog sit still and relax in confinement. Don't be that owner/handler. Get them comfortable with things before they are nessecary and it makes it so much easier on you and their well being.

Hey everyone we have a young dog Bear here looking for work! Bear is fantastic house pet, companion, and farm dog. He shows interest in livestock but can be sensitive with the handler so we are trying to find the right fit for him. We have lots of young dogs going and due to him being sensitive to handler pressure we are trying to find him a good place with a lighter more easier going work load or a handler that is very easy going and understanding about expectations when it comes to work. He can be left out side loose and is a great companion just to hang out with. He has alot of personality and is a great dog would consider active pet homes or farm lifestyles. If your interested please contact us and we can talk more!

Its always great to hear from people about dogs we have sold! This is Blitz with Sabrina Pray. Sabrina has done some amazing work with Blitz in all kinds of categories and has turned her into a very nice dog. Blitz comes from our subiexspot litter and we are happy to brag in their very first detection dog trial they took top! We try hard to produce well rounded dogs that can go in any direction while still focusing on producing quality herding dogs. Its nice to see Blitz excelling with Sabrina and to know they have a great partner ship in place way to go!

It's hard sometimes to take pictures and videos on the everyday stuff. But it's pictures of the everyday stuff that remind us how incredibly helpful there dogs are! Just moving the sheep in and out of the moveable fencing daily would be such a chore if the dogs weren't there to make it look easy!

Shearing time up here on the mountain! It was another example of how invaluable good dogs are when handling livestock. Daisy and Utah were key in me being able to move and handle protective ewes and their bouncy lambs while packing along a newborn baby, showing both their ability to be tough when necessary, and gentle when the livestock permit. Jetta also got to try her hand at handling the flock with lambs, and showed her finesse and style!
