The 3 Fs of Equine Welfare 🐴

The three fundamental requirements for horses, commonly known as the 3 Fs, encompass the essential aspects of their well-being: friends, forage and freedom. These needs stem from the evolutionary and domestication processes horses have undergone, as their innate requirements remain broadly consistent with those of their wild ancestors. This framework of the 3 Fs takes into account the physiological, ethological, and psychological needs of horses.

Friends 🐴

Horses are social animals that naturally form herds and establish social connections. Keeping horses with other horses of the same species guarantees opportunities for social interactions. This is important for horses as prey animals, as having companions gives them a sense of security. In the wild, feral and wild horses typically organize themselves into herds led by a stallion, consisting of his mares, their offspring, or groups of young stallions. Horses communicate through various means, such as body language and expressive behaviours. Mutual grooming and play are examples of significant social behaviours that contribute to horses' diverse and fulfilling lives.

Forage 🌿

The horse possesses a specialized digestive system that is well-suited for continuous foraging and grazing. To support optimal health, the horse's diet should consist of ample fibre and allow for sufficient time spent feeding. By prioritizing a diet rich in forage and high in fibre, the horse's risk of digestive-related health problems and behavioural issues arising from inadequate foraging and chewing time can be minimized.

Freedom 🐎

The horse has evolved to be well-suited for a nomadic lifestyle and grazing behaviour. Granting the horse the freedom to engage in various activities such as roaming, grazing, rolling, playing, and behaving according to its instincts is crucial for its overall well-being. Restricting freedom of movement and failing to provide adequate opportunities for natural behaviour can have detrimental effects on the welfare of horses.

The Importance of Maintaining the Health of Your Horse's Mouth 🐴🦷

Your horse's health depends on routine dental treatment. Today, for a variety of dentistry reasons, periodic exams and routine maintenance, such as floating, are very important because;

🦷 The food and eating habits of the horse have been altered as a result of domestication and confinement.

🦷 We place higher standards on our performance horses than ever before, starting at a younger age.

🦷 We frequently choose breeding animals without taking tooth health into account.

Good dental hygiene provides benefits. Your horse will be more comfortable, make better use of its food, possibly perform better, and even possibly live longer.

🚨 COMMON DENTAL PROBLEMS:

Horses may suffer from many dental problems. The most common include:

· Sharp enamel points forming on cheek teeth, causing lacerations of cheeks and tongue.
· Retained caps (deciduous teeth that are not shed).
· Discomfort caused by bit contact with the wolf teeth.
· Hooks forming on the upper and lower cheek teeth.
· Long and/or sharp canine (bridle) teeth interfering with the insertion or removal of the bit.
· Lost and/or broken teeth.
· Abnormal or uneven bite planes.
· Excessively worn teeth.
· Abnormally long teeth.
· Infected teeth and/or gums.
· Misalignment/poor apposition (can be due to congenital defects or injury).
· Periodontal (gum) disease.

How Do You Bathe a Horse? 🧼

To bathe a horse, you'll need a few tools, such as horse shampoo, conditioner, a sponge, a curry comb, a mane comb, and a sweat scraper.

➰ You could start by securing your horse; we recommend (cross ties). Afterwards, remove any remaining dirt from their skin and hair with the curry comb. Detangle the horse's mane and tail hair with the mane comb.

🧽 Use a moist sponge to wipe the horse's face, being careful not to get water in their eyes or ears. Use a clean, wet sponge as often as necessary, and avoid applying soap or shampoo on their face.

🚿 After that, wet the horse with a hose, starting with the legs and working your way up. Apply a small bit of shampoo directly to a wet sponge or dilute it by mixing it with a pail of water.

🧴 The shampoo should foam as you work it into your horse's coat. then use water to rinse off. Shampoo can dry out if it is left on for too long, thus it is advisable to shampoo and wash tiny parts rather than the entire body at once.

🧺 Make sure to thoroughly rinse the shampoo out since if the chemicals are left in, they could harm the horse's coat. The horse must then be completely dried. To remove extra water, you can either use clean towels or a sweat scraper.

🪣 Use a mane brush after using your fingers to comb through the horse's mane. The horse's tail must next be washed by dipping it into a bucket of water and swishing it around to remove any remaining dirt.

In order to make sure the tail is completely clean, combine some shampoo with the water. Use a sponge to scrub the top of the tail. To make sure the tail is clean, you might need to use many buckets of water. After wiping it off with a towel, either turn the horse out to graze or put it on a walker to dry it off thoroughly.

🐴 Everything You Should Know About Cross Ties for Horses.

When working with your horse, cross ties are an excellent technique to tether them. It gives you room and keeps the animal balanced, preventing tangles or injuries to you. Cross ties should connect in the middle and be at least as high as your horses' withers.

🤔 So how do cross ties work? What are they?

Horse cross ties are just two pieces of rope, strap, or chain fastened to opposite sides of a wall or two posts. The ends have a quick-release snap clip that can be fastened to the halter of the horse.

These enable you to securely restrain your horse so that they are immobile and swiftly untie them in case of an emergency. Cross ties can very handy when working with young horses in particular.

💡 The benefits of tying your horses with cross ties.

If you own horses, you are aware of how crucial it is to maintain your horse's serenity. Using cross ties is one technique to achieve this. They make grooming and saddling considerably simpler and are a safe and practical method to handle your horse.

The horse barn where we keep our racehorses has two wash racks, both of which have cross ties, sufficient lighting, and concrete flooring covered in rubber mats. To securely handle horses, all three are necessary.

The grooms always tie our horses with cross ties after removing them from their stalls and taking them to the wash rack. They are brushed and extensively inspected for swelling, wounds, and foot issues while there. They are organized and cleared before being tacked up for morning exercise.

They are brought back to the wash rack and reconnected to the cross ties after their training is over. This time, before heading to the wheel to cool down, they are unsaddled, brushed, and examined one more.

They are once more brought back to the wash rack after finishing at the walking wheel for a thorough bath before going back to their stall.

Cross ties are useful for training young horses, keeping a horse from moving around, and holding a horse's head up. For young horses that are not accustomed to being restrained, they are useful tools. It trains them to remain motionless and restricts their movement less than conventional tying techniques.

Discover more about the horse's feet, which are a highly significant component of their anatomy!

· A horse's hooves continuously develop, just like human fingernails and toenails do. The typical hoof grows by at least a quarter inch in a single month. Horses may naturally trim their hooves to a safe length on rocky surfaces, but when they wear shoes or spend the most of their time on softer surfaces, they require particular care to stay comfortable.

· A farrier is an equine professional who focuses in caring for horses' hooves. Every six to eight weeks, the majority of horses need to visit a farrier.

· Specialised horseshoes are frequently worn by horses to keep their feet balanced and chip-free. Horseshoes can provide therapeutic support to structures in the hoof that are important for the horse’s gait.

· Although steel is the most frequent material for horseshoes, aluminium and plastic glue-on variants are also often used. To make sure that each horse receives the ideal fit for their requirements and comfort, a wide range of choices are offered.

· While every horse needs regular hoof care, not every horse also needs horseshoes! For many horses, keeping healthy hoof length and shape merely requires routine trimming.

· The phrase "if there's no hoof, there's no horse" refers to the crucial function that a horse's hoof plays in maintaining its health. Keratin, the same material that makes up our fingernails and a rhinoceros' horn, makes up the outer layer of a horse's hoof. The structural base of the hoof, which supports equine mobility, is made up of bones, tendons, and ligaments.

10 Pointers for Keeping your Horse Healthy 🐴 (Part II)

(The first 5 tips are in our previous post)

It is your responsibility to keep your horse happy and healthy and here is the rest of the list of 10 quick tips that you should follow 👇🏼

6. Take good care of your horse’s hooves.

If you don't take good care of your horse's legs and hooves, you won't be able to enjoy exciting activities like horseback riding, horse show jumping, or even using it as a pasture ornament.

7. Regular deworming.

Intestinal parasites can injure your horse's organs in unforeseen ways. Deworming must be done on a regular basis to prevent this and should be done in a scientific and individualised manner. Due to the variety of deworming products currently on the market, deworming is affordable and simple to complete.

8. Exercising.

Your horse will benefit from exercise and maintain its legs strong and healthy if you allow it to leave the paddock. Daily exercise benefits your horse's health by enhancing its digestion, circulation, and overall attitude.

9. Optimum weight check.

Always keep your horse at a healthy weight. A horse's legs are put under additional strain when it is overweight, and it is weak when it is underweight. As a result, both are undesirable. Hence, if your horse is underweight, you should increase its nutritional intake, and if your horse is getting too fat, you should lower its dietary intake.

10. Joint nutraceuticals should be used.

A horse's health is greatly aided by the presence of glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), which are found in joint nutraceuticals. These chemicals are widely accessible at tack stores and online in a variety of products.

10 Pointers for Keeping your Horse Healthy 🐴 (Part I)

It is your responsibility to keep your horse happy and healthy and here is a list of 10 quick tips that you should follow 👇🏼

1. Minimize your horse’s stress.

Due to their extreme sensitivity and nervousness, horses are 10 times more prone to experience stress and thus become unwell.

Here's how to prevent it:

· A horse should always be handled with patience.
· Always keep a horse with another horse friend. While training a new horse, exercise extra caution and try not to be too noisy or irritable.
· Put yourself in the horse's shoes to better comprehend its thought process. The best illustration of it is realizing that horses are both herd and prey animals.
· Avoid confusing a horse with too many new things at once. Keep it gradual and slow.
· Horses enjoy spending their "me time" staring, rolling, dashing around, and simply having fun. Try giving them their happy time every once in a while.

2. Never miss Annual Vet Exams.

Similar to people, horses require yearly checkups and must visit the vet on a consistent basis. A horse may appear to be attractive and healthy from the outside, but if you skip the annual vet checkups, there is a good risk that an inside problem is lingering there unnoticed. So, arrange yearly veterinary checks to reduce the likelihood of bigger dangers.

3. Get your horse vaccinated annually.

Equine encephalomyelitis, influenza/rhinopneumonitis, and West Nile virus are just a few of the illnesses that horses need to be immunized against. Also, the required immunizations differ based on where you reside and the local climate.

Most important vaccines in Asia and in Sri Lanka would be Tetanus, Rabies and Japanese encephalitis.

4. Quality food.

You often hear that you are what you eat, and this adage also holds true for horses. To keep healthy and strong, a horse needs roughage. Be prepared to spend a significant amount of money on high-quality hay when purchasing a horse if you want to keep it in better health. If you are training your horse for a horse show jumping competition, a high-quality diet is even more crucial.

5. File your horse’s teeth regularly.

Because they consume the same food repeatedly while they live with people, horses' teeth tend to wear down unevenly. Thus, it is very advised to have the horse's teeth routinely cleaned by the veterinarian.

Also, it guarantees the timely discovery of secondary problems like an abscessed tooth or a loose tooth.

The Historical Importance of War Horses.

Horses have been significant to battle throughout history, acting as transportation, armaments, and symbols of power. War horses have participated in wars all across the world as the dependable partners of soldiers. Here are a few explanations of why war horses have played such a significant role throughout human history.

Mobility: Horses have long been used as a form of transportation in times of war. They are faster and more mobile than soldiers on foot, which makes them ideal for reconnaissance missions, courier duties, and carrying supplies and equipment. War horses were also used to carry knights into battle, giving them an advantage in speed and mobility over soldiers on foot.

Weaponry: Horses themselves have been used as weapons in warfare. Cavalry units, consisting of soldiers on horseback, were often used to charge into battle, using their speed and momentum to break through enemy lines. Horses were also equipped with armour to protect themselves and their riders from enemy weapons.

Psychological impact: War horses were often seen as symbols of power and strength, and their presence on the battlefield could have a psychological impact on enemy soldiers. The sight and sound of charging horses could be terrifying to enemy troops, giving an advantage to the side that had access to war horses.

Logistics: War horses were helpful in carrying supplies, food, and ammunition, which were critical for the success of any military operation. Horses were also aiding in carrying wounded soldiers from the battlefield, which was essential for the survival of wounded soldiers.

Cultural impact: War horses have also played a role in the cultural identity of many nations and civilizations. They have been depicted in art, literature, and legends, and they continue to inspire awe and respect to this day.

The war horse has been an important part of human history, playing a critical role in many battles and wars. They have left a lasting legacy that continues to be remembered and admired to this day.

Common myths about horses 🐴

💤 Horses always sleep standing up:

A horse can doze off when standing, as they have an aspect in their bodies called the ‘stay mechanism’ which helps them relax their muscles without needing to completely lay down. But horses do lay down to sleep, just like us, and needs a couple of hours every four to five days at minimum. They will do this more often when part of a herd, due to safety in numbers.

🐎 30 minutes of exercise a day is considered hard work:

This depends on the intensity of the exercise and the level of work your horse is used to. For some horses, 30 minutes of exercise may only be light work but for others, it may be hard work. It is important to feed appropriately for the workload your horse is doing to avoid any weight fluctuations.

☁️ Horses should be stabled in bad weather:

While horses do need some protection from the elements - shelter, trees or a barn – they do not require warm housing and have been shown to be able to comfortably tolerate low temperatures. Research has shown that horses with free access to both pasture and to stables with bedding, hay, and water, prefer pasture even during poor weather as long as some grass is available.

❌ The best way for a horse to lose weight is to starve it:

Horses have evolved as trickle feeders, designed to be chewing for at least 16 hours per day. Horses should not be starved as this can cause metabolic complications and does not satisfy the horses psychological need to chew. Horses that need to lose weight must burn more calories than they eat. Exercise will be instrumental in helping to burn these calories.

Equine Avenues: Equine Medicine

Equine veterinarians are licensed animal health professionals, who are qualified to diagnose and treat horses.

Equine veterinarians perform a basic examination of the patient, administers routine vaccinations, takes clinical samples for further diagnosis and prescribes medication. They also evaluate and dress wounds, perform surgical operations and related medical activities which include the providing of post-surgical examinations and assessments. Furthermore, Equine veterinarians carry out assessment programmes for horses on sale, monitors the reproductive health of breeding stallions and broodmares, assists with foaling and take x-rays or ultrasound scans. Equine veterinarians work closely with a farrier, to correct angular limb deformities, solve issues on lameness and ensures that the foot is properly balanced.

It is common for equine veterinarians to work a five to six day week with additional “on call” emergency hours as needed. Work may occur outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions. Veterinarians, especially those working with large animals, should always follow proper safety precautions to minimise the risk of injury, while working with their patients.

We had a discussion with Dr. Alexandria, a Veterinarian specialising in Equine Medicine, on the subject of Equine Medicine. The conversation highlighted key points such as the importance of Equine Medical Health and about the future of Equine Medicine and wellbeing of horses, in Sri Lanka.

How to Select Horse Rugs?

💡 The most important thing to remember about rugging is that each horse is unique. Although there is no definitive answer to when to use a rug, there are warning signs to look for.

🌡 First, take your horse's temperature, which is best done under their armpit. If this feels cool, you know it's rug time. Remember that if your hands are cold, it may appear warmer than it is.

⏰ If you decide to turn out your horse full-time for forage, you may notice your horse shivering and running around. If you want to reduce the amount of forage your horse needs, a rug can help because it reduces the amount of work he has to do to stay warm.

🐎 It is critical that if you do use a rug, you quantify their feed because too much food can lead to excess energy, which can lead to fat deposits. Most horses do not require rugs until the temperature falls below 10°C. Their coats are excellent insulators because the natural oils in them repel water, keeping them from getting wet and cold, and they hold heat exceptionally well.

🐴 However, it is important to consider your horse's characteristics; if he or she is older, younger, thinner, or clipped, he or she may require ruggedness sooner. Check under your horse's rug on a regular basis for any new lumps, bumps, or changes in body condition—especially sweating. For optimal horse care, if your horse is sweating, you should reconsider your rugging method.

Check out the temperature guide for rugging throughout the year to ensure perfect horse care.
