Rotational grazing can help you take better care of your pastures and provide more feed for your horses.
Rotational grazing can help you take better care of your pastures and provide more feed for your horses.
🤔 Even though most farm managers have heard of the term, 'rotational grazing,' they might not completely get the idea.
💡Rotational grazing is a management technique that, when utilized properly, produces robust, healthy stands of fodder that give horses a considerable amount of nourishment. For horses with minimal caloric needs, high-quality pasture can satisfy or even surpass their protein and energy needs. While rotational grazing necessitates a little more supervision than continuous grazing, the benefits include more valuable feed for horses and fertile pastures that require less frequent upkeep. Managing modestly stocked farms this way will maximize yield.
💭 In general, if you want the horses to be outside all the time and not overgraze the pasture, you need two to four acres per horse. Although the majority of farmers don't have this much land, horses can still be kept on smaller farms with great pastures by using more intense grazing management techniques. Of course, even using rotational grazing, there is a limit to the number of horses the land can sustain.
🌾 By employing a rotational grazing method, farm managers may prevent their horses from overgrazing meadows. In a nutshell, rotational grazing means moving a group of horses between multiple paddocks on a regular basis. After being grazed once, the forage is rested to regenerate. The healing time for the grass while the horses are in other paddocks is the most crucial component of this approach. This necessitates leaving paddocks unoccupied for a few weeks at a time.
· In general, horses should not stay in a paddock for more than seven days because that is how long it takes for forage regrowth to start after grazing. However, every farm manager will determine the best plan for their rotation.
