LipiData's LipiFacts - Most Lipizzaners are born coloured (often black or bay) and then gradually grey out as they age. The grey gene is what is known as autosomal dominant gene. This means a horse only needs one copy of the grey allele for him to turn grey.

LipiData's Lipizzaner of the Month - 224 Conversano Allegra V

224 Conversano Allegra V "Leo" was a privately-bred Slovenian stallion imported into Australia in 2005 by Hans and Louise Krutzler. In 2002, "Leo" won the European Young Stallion Championship held in Slovakia.

"Leo" was by the Lipica stallion 001 Conversano Capriola XIV and sired 19 progeny in Australia before sadly passing in 2015.

Two of these progeny are the full brothers 262 Conversano Grace I and 272 Conversano Grace II, bred by Hans and Louise Krutzler.
The dam of these two horses, 178 Grace, was bred by Australia's foundation breeder, Mr Geoff Adcock, and was one of the last remaining horses in Australia to retain strictly classical blood.

LipiData's LipiFacts - Airs Above the Ground Edition - the levade requires the horse to place his entire weight on his hindquarters and lift his forehand off the ground at an angle of 30 to 35 degrees. The horse requires immense strength and balance to perform this movement.

Edited to add:

Alois Podhajsky tells us a little more about the development of the levade -

"Up to the nineteenth century the riding masters knew only pesade in which the horse lifts his forehand off the ground with lowered hocks, his body forming an angle of 45 degrees to the ground. Beginning with the twentieth century an exercise was introduced in which the height of the body from the ground was reduced and the body held at an angle of 30 degrees to the ground. This was called the levade...If the horse lifts himself higher from the ground at an angle of more than 45 degrees and does not bend his hind legs, he does not perform any classical movement but simply rears up."

LipiData's Lipizzaner of the Month - 201-166 Pluto Linda I

Continuing our look back through Australia's foundation lines, Pluto Linda I, "Pluto", is descended from the bay Hungarian mare, 300 Incitato IX-10, and the Piber stallion, 303 Pluto Plutona-14 - both recently spotlighted in our Lipizzaner of the Month features.

"Pluto" was a 1994 stallion, bred by Karoly "Charlie" Keves who immigrated to Australia from Hungary in 1957, and is considered to be one of Australia's foundation Lipizzaner breeders. Charlie developed a great respect and love for the breed as a young boy and would continue his love for the breed in Australia when he acquired his first Australian Lipizzaners from Bent and Marianne Christensen. Of course many of these horses acquired by Charlie were of Hungarian descent.

Campaigned for the majority of his life by Don and Di Baxter of Omaru Stud, "Pluto" competed very successfully in the dressage arena up to Advanced level. He was also extremely successful in breed classes and came home with many champion sashes.

Unfortunately "Pluto" left only one entire c**t behind, the young 538 Pluto Gidrane. Pluto Gidrane brings together Pluto's predominately Hungarian and Piber blood, with older Lipica and Djakovo lines through the imported 224 Conversano Allegra V (ZRLS), and 178 Grace (a grand-daughter of 298 Siglavy Flora 1-75).

"Pluto" passed in November 2019, a day before his 25th birthday, and 2 years after Charlie passed.

LipiData's Lipizzaner of the Month - 300 Incitato IX-10

One of the first mares to be imported to Australia, "Lippi" was bred at Szilvásvárad and is responsible for the interesting story of the 4sz Mezöhegyesi mare family in Australia, as well as being the only coloured horse to be imported into the country.

The 4sz Mezöhegyesi mare line, for many years, was thought to be lost. During clarification of "Lippi"'s pedigree, stemming from LIF meetings in the 1990s, it was during the early-mid 2000s when it was discovered 4sz Mezöhegyesi was not only present in Australia, but flourishing, with it being the most prevelant mare family in the country; and it was "Lippi" perpetuating the line.

It was the work of Atjan Hop that eventually identified 4sz Mezöhegyesi as being a part of the 519 Original Hungarin mare family, dating back to Mezöhegyesi in 1787, a branch which had died out in Hungary but still existed in Romania, and (now!) Australia.

Although born in Hungary, "Lippi" was imported to Australia via Denmark in the mid-1970s by Bent and Marianne Christensen to their Bibaringa stud, located in Canberra. The imported Piber stallion 303 Pluto Plutona-14, last month's spotlight, also stood at Bibaringa around this this time. Upon the disbandenment of Bibaringa, "Lippi" was sold to Hungarian-born Karoly Keves.

"Lippi"'s grandson, the deceased stallion 270 Siglavy Lili, is the culmination of our recently spotlighted horses - the Piber stallions 298 Siglavy Flora 1-75 and 303 Pluto Plutona-14, and the Hungarian mare 300 Incitato IX-10.

270 Siglavy Lili's paternal grandsire is 298 Siglavy Flora 1-75, maternal granddam is 300 Incitato IX-10, and maternal great-grandsire is 303 Pluto Plutona-14. Not only is 270 Siglavy Lili responsible for perpetuating the Siglavy name in Australia, he is also responsible for passing down the breeding traditions started by Australia's two foundation breeders - Geoff Adcock, and Bent and Marianne Christensen. A pedigree full of history and stories.

You can find out more about 300 Incitato IX-10 and her progeny here:

Ever wondered if a Lipizzaner has competed at the Olympics? The answer is yes! Johanna Hall and Conversano Caprice competed for Great Britain at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games.
