Monkeys often sleep in the bottom layer of the tree canopy, avoiding the top canopy where it is cold and windy. At night they form large sleeping clusters. There are several hypotheses that explain the formation of dense sleeping groups, the most important of which is the process of thermoregulation. The thermoregulatory hypothesis proposes that the primary function of sleep in dense groups is to conserve heat at low temperatures. Along with thermoregulation, safety from predators is an important principle underlying the formation of sleeping clusters in primates.

The protection of youth is a joint task. Mothers often have helpers to help them take care of their children. When faced with danger from a predator such as the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), younger individuals are placed in the center of the group while stronger adult males move closer to the danger. For the rest of the day, the members of the group stay closer to each other, and the youth remain protected in the center.

Rhinopithecus live in groups ranging in size from 5-10 individuals to packs of about 600 individuals. The social organization of this species can be quite complex. Families with one male, several adult females and their offspring are the basic social unit, and several such families form a large flock.

They formally live in the subtropics, but in mountainous areas at an altitude of one and a half to three thousand meters, for which the Chinese called them "snow monkeys". In summer they rise higher into the mountains (where the temperature is lower), in winter they descend to heights of about a thousand meters above sea level. Most of their lives are spent in trees. At the slightest danger, they climb onto their tops.

The body length (without tail) of adult monkeys is up to 62 cm, the tail length is 50-70 cm. The weight of adult males is about 16-17 kg, adult females are about 9-10 kg. Sexual maturity occurs in males at 7 years, in females at 4-5 years. Pregnancy is seven months long. The cubs are raised by both parents.

They live in South and Central China. The largest populations are in the Wolong National Reserve (Sichuan).

Roxellan rhinopithecine (originally Rhinopithecus roxellanae, now Pygathrix roxellana) is a species of Chinese monkey. The specific name roxellanae is derived from the wife of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the beauty Roksolana, who was distinguished by her upturned nose.
