When we wanted to start dog breeding, we were initially ignored by the breeders in several well know Irish Wolfhound Clubs. We first looked to them for guidance because they were the only clubs we knew existed. We read books and were basically left to learn dog breeding on our own. We had a background in livestock breeding. There is a considerable amount of overlap between breeding for quality, healthy livestock and breeding for quality, healthy dogs.
Then we found the National Irish Wolfhound Association and met some very experienced breeders there. They were a tremendous help to us, as we sought to improve Mactire Irish Wolfhounds and continued to focus on producing quality, healthy examples of the breed.
Now it is our turn to reach back and help one of our owners, who put in the effort to demonstrate that she wants to be a responsible breeder. We don’t just give full registration, with the associated AKC breeding rights to just anyone (as a recent inquirer has learned). But it is our pleasure to work with people, who are willing to put in the effort to learn enough about breeding so that they will be an asset to the Irish Wolfhound breed. The first litter from a dam we produced, but do not own, will be whelped in a few weeks. The dam’s owner has followed every instruction we gave her. She is still as nervous as any expectant mother. We will be helping her find good homes for these puppies. What a blessing it is to us, to be able to help someone, the way the breeders in the NIWA helped us. I’m not sure why many of the breeders in other Irish Wolfhound Clubs were unwilling to help or even talk to us when we first expressed an interest in breeding. Training up responsible breeders is how we protect the breed.
