Dachshunds love to chew all manner of things, from shoes and toys to sticks and plastic.

But when they start to ingest non-edible items such as socks or underwear something can inevitably become stuck.

If you know your dog has eaten something it should not have, take it to your vet as soon as possible to discuss treatment options.

If your dog has been unwell and an X-ray shows an object is stuck in the stomach or intestines, an endoscopy or surgery is usually needed.

Prevention is better than cure. If you know your dog is prone to eating certain items, then eliminate access.

Put your clothes away, do not leave rubbish lying around, store chemicals and pesticides out of reach, and cover bins.

If you suspect this habit is caused by loneliness or boredom, try increasing your pup’s physical activity and mental stimulation.

Hopefully you don’t end up with an emergency situation as it’s very scary for dogs and owners, plus can be expensive!

Most dachshunds love squeaky toys because it’s in their nature as it activates their hunting instinct.

The toys sound like an injured rat or rabbit that they may have caught. When a small animal is caught, they make a loud squeaky sound to alert any other animals that there is danger around. The sound sends a hunting dog like a dachshund into overdrive.

Tearing up a toy is your dog’s way of re-enacting killing their prey. This is one reason that a dog will also rip the stuffing to shreds. This is what they would do in the wild.

The dog knows the toy isn’t alive, but because the squeaker triggers their prey drive, your dog likely won’t leave the squeaky toy alone until the squeaker stops making that noise. That’s why some dogs actually rip apart toys and remove and dismantle the squeaker. In theory, this indicates to your dog that he/she has successfully “killed” the prey. Now, he/she can stop chewing — or attacking — the toy.

Just watch out for those squeakers because if swallowed they can do damage, as can the stuffing, as it can get stuck in the intestines. So these type of toys should only be given under supervision. And if you suspect they have swallowed the squeaker, then an immediate trip to the vet would be best.

Trimming your Dachshunds nails should be done regularly to keep them nice and short, probably every 3 weeks is ideal.

If your dachshund’s nails are too long, his toes will splay out, causing dirt and debris to get stuck in his pads. This can cause pain and discomfort when he walks and could lead to possible joint problems and infection.

Another issue with long nails is the impact they can have on your dachshund’s posture and gait. If your dachshund’s nails are too long, his feet are forced back so he starts walking on his pasterns, which are basically his wrists.

If you’re going to trim your dachshunds nails yourself, then the right tools make the job so much easier.

Otherwise you can take the easy way out and get the pet groomers to do it for you.

Whatever option you choose, please do it regularly for a happy healthier dog.
