Newfoundland Club of New England Rescue and Referral Leadership Change

Recently, the NCNE Rescue Chair, Beth Rossi, formed a new organization, National Newfoundland Rescue (NNR). This has been a dream for Beth for quite some time. This organization is formed to address the needs of Newfoundland rescue in underserved areas of the country as well as handle mix breed Newfoundland dogs.

The NCNE Board of Directors decided having these two organizations run by the same individual posed a conflict of interest and was creating some confusion among the Newfoundland community. Therefore, the Board made the decision to move forward with a leadership change of NCNE Rescue and Referral. Beth will work with the club to have a smooth transition and will step away from her responsibilities for NCNE Rescue.

In the meantime, Cathy Derench from That Newfoundland Place, will serve as the facilitator for NCNE Rescue and Referral needs effective today, March 9, 2022. The Board is grateful for Cathy’s willingness to help coordinate the activities of the NCNE Rescue and looks forward to finding a permanent coordinator in the near future. If you are interested, please contact Mary Bylone at [email protected] or 860-908-2909.

The Board wishes Beth all the best in her efforts to continue to meet the needs of the Newfoundland dog and acknowledges the excellent job by Beth for developing a strong team and establishing a much needed social media presence for NCNE Rescue. Please join us in sending a big thank you for all Beth has done for our Newfoundland Community.

Oh my goodness! Will you just look at this adorable girl! Lulu is 6 years old and just as cute as can be.

Unfortunately, her pray drive is too much for her current family and she's coming into rescue as soon as we find a suitable foster home for her.

Lulu is good with kids and large male dogs. She's a firm no on small animals, especially cats, and we're going to extend that to small breed dogs as well. She also firmly believes that she should be the only queen of her palace, so no other female dogs please.

If you think you fit what Lulu needs, please reach out to your state coordinator, or submit an application today: https://www.newfclubne.org/rescue-and-referral/

Although we’re still getting to know Wyatt, I do think it’s safe to say that he’s definitely kid friendly. Look at those loving eyes ❤️❤️

Wyatt is a pocket Newf that I posted about the other day. Weighing in at only 62 lbs, this boy needs to get some much needed groceries in him and get his vetting to get nice and healthy. Luckily he’s landed in an amazing foster home to help him prepare for furever.

More to come as we get to know Wyatt. ❤️

Edit- just for clarification, there is no such thing as a “pocket Newf”. This is a tongue-in-cheek term I use for poorly bred newfs that do not align to breed standards. It is NOT something that should be sought after!!

Not the best photos, but this beautiful lady is Brook. She’s River’s momma and joined him in rescue today.

Brook is 6 years old and like her puppy is good with other dogs, cats and kids. She also needs to be vetted and settle into her foster home. As fate wild have it, Anya got adopted today and Brook was able to take the empty spot in the foster home to get spoiled and loved on. We’re still getting to know Brook to know what she needs in furever, but for now she’s enjoying the love and spoiling from her foster family.

This handsome fella is River and he just came into rescue this morning. River is 2 years old and an absolute love. He’s joined NCNE Rescue alumni, Padwell and Finn to learn the ropes of what it means to be in NCNE Rescue!

He’s good with other dogs, cats and kids. With that said though, River needs to be vetted, get some training and to experience more of the world before we know what kind of home he’ll thrive in. Stay tuned for more updates on this handsome fella.

Ok let’s talk about Anya! This lovely lady turns 8 on Monday. She loves car rides even though she needs a boost to get in, walks, b***y scratches, silly happy songs and positive energy get her tail wagging, lovies (on her terms) and special meals topped with homemade bone broth and yummy toppings. She enjoys having a job which she has decided means collecting shoes and bringing them to her crate which she never seems interested in other than for stashing “valuable” items. She may enjoy being taught a special job like rounding up toys or collecting your shoes. She walks very well on leash. She has some allergies that cause skin problems. Grooming, skin care and restricted diet are paramount. She has a few pounds to shed and as we know, extra weight on a dog can be painful on the joints. She seems to bond especially close to women but men are just fine too. Sometimes she needs a little break and quiet. She would like a chill sibling but not a bouncy one. She has not been cat tested but squirrels draw no prey drive from her and she shows no particular interest in small animals so they would likely be just fine. She is not kid tested yet. She does not like strangers to come in to her home and can get growly unless properly introduced outside first. She is a Velcro dog and wants her humans close by.
Sounds like a unicorn dog right? Ok here’s the catch- if you’d like to adopt Anya you must be her perfect match because her foster family and I are in love with her. If you’re not willing to worship her every day don’t bother applying. She deserves nothing less than perfection. You will have to get through me first AND then through her foster mama as well. If you think you make the cut, please reach out! If you’re approved already send us a message or contact your state coordinator. If you’re not approved, start the application now and include that you’re interested in her but please understand that processing an application takes time and our volunteers are very busy these days. Good luck!

What to expect when you’re expecting… to adopt a rescue:
Thank you for supporting rescue! We love love our adopters! Rescue dogs are worth your time and effort and love, they will pay you back 1,000 fold. But it truly does take a lot of time, effort and love.

What dogs do we see most often? These days we see a lot of young dogs in need of training. It’s extremely rare that we get young puppies or well bred breed standards or calm easy going older dogs. It does happen but it’s very uncommon. When we do get chill easy going dogs, even they require lots of decompression, time and work to assimilate in to your home. All of them do. And the rare puppies we see often have genetic issues that can cost far more than adopting a well bred puppy from a reputable breeder. There really isn’t a “cheap” Newfoundland.

Who gets to adopt the best dogs? They’re all the best 😊 We need to choose the best for your situation and if no pre approved homes fit that particular dog, we’ll wait as long as it takes to find them the perfect place. They deserve it.

If you want to adopt in the future please apply now. Our volunteers generally have busy lives and it takes time to process your application.
Apply here: https://www.newfclubne.org/rescue-and-referral/
We are grateful for your application.

Hi friends!
Just a reminder as you see us sharing the dogs coming in:
When they first arrive we have zero answers about what their needs are or personality traits. Our amazing fosters need to evaluate first and this can take weeks or months.
Comments on our posts are not the same as applying or reaching out to your state coordinator.
If you’re already approved and interested, feel free to check in with your state coordinator.
If you’re not approved and you’re interested we encourage you to apply here, adopters are not a first come, first served situation. You might be their perfect fit. The ONLY way to find out is to apply https://www.newfclubne.org/rescue-and-referral/
And lastly, if you are concerned about drooling and shedding and mud I have shared a photo of a Newf you might prefer 😂

And here we have Stryker, aka Pork Chop. Stryker also came into rescue yesterday and he's just as sweet a dream as they come. Unfortunately, he also has a blown ACL and will be going in for TPLO surgery as soon as we get some weight off him. Stay tuned for more updates on Stryker, but he's going to be a little bit of a longer foster while we get his vetting sorted out.

Allow me the sincere pleasure of introducing Anya!! Anya is a sweet, gentle girl who is 8 years young and is an absolute love!

Anya is settling into her foster home, but here’s what we know about her so far:
- Good with cats, dogs and kids (can you say trifecta?)
- Strangers are scary for her though, so a less social household without a revolving door of visitors would be best
- While I hate to talk about a woman’s weight, let’s just say that a few extra walks and a few less treats are in her future
- Speaking of walks, some extra leash training is definitely on the agenda for her too

Other than that, she’s only been with us a few hours now, so we’re still getting to know her. Stay tuned for more updates on Anya as we get to know her and what she needs.

Is your dog showing aggressive behavior?
There’s lots of advice to share about this but a recent experience with my beautiful Blue prompted me to share.
Blue snapped at me (no contact) I was totally shocked and alarmed. She is eating, drinking, walking, running, regular bowel movements. Everything appeared to be normal.
If something like this happens with your dog the first thing you should do is have your vet do a full exam. The #1 cause of aggression is pain or discomfort. It’s easy to lose confidence when this happens. You worry for yourself, your kids, your other pets. If you need to muzzle your dog until you can get them to a vet it’s ok (basket style allows for panting and drinking). Do what you need to do to avoid injury or a bite history. Calming treats with melatonin, chamomile and tryptophan are my personal preference for my own dogs as needed.
X-rays revealed that Blue has a problem with her hips. We don’t know what yet, just waiting for the radiologist to examine them. So, problem maybe not solved yet but it’s identified at least. Now that she’s on anti inflammatory meds it’s clear she’s more comfortable.
In rescue, we see dogs come in that were acting aggressive and it turned out to be a medical issue or reaction to medications like Doxycycline and others. Doxy isn’t bad and has many uses but can cause tummy aches which some dogs act out over.
There are many more causes for aggression and we can sometimes help owners get to the bottom of the issue and offer advice, please reach out if you need us. That’s the “referral” part of Newfoundland Club of New England Rescue and Referral.
Hope this helps! Love to your furry kids from me at NCNERR ❤️🐾

Hi Friends!
Just a friendly reminder that comments on posts do not count as applications. If you are interested in a dog currently in rescue and are an approved adopter please reach out to your state coordinator. If you are interested in a dog currently in rescue and are not approved please fill out an application in the link below.
I credit Doug Erkkila for the meme idea. Thanks Doug 😁

How cute is she?!? Allow me the pleasure of introducing Billie Holliday. Billie just turned 12 months old and is as cute as can be!!

Billie definitely needs some training work and is currently enrolled in Bruno Bootcap with the amazing Kris Bruno.

What I can tell you right now is that any potential adopter will need a firm commitment to continue her training. For now though, we’re just getting to now her and there will definitely be more to come!

Athena’s Tale Part Three:
We are happy to announce that Athena has found her family! Congratulations to Mandy and Nick Chomes who fell in love with her at an Newfoundland Club of New England event. These two angels supported and encouraged her throughout her rehabilitation. I admit that I tried to scare them off by emphasizing how much maintenance she will require indefinitely and told them it was unlikely that we’d ever let her go. They stood by her and loved her anyway. They drove hours just to visit multiple times and donated a custom made brace for her elbows. When Eric and I watched them with her, we knew we had met her true family. It was a difficult decision to let her go but my heart is full knowing she is where she belongs.
Nick and Mandy report that Athena is playing with their other dog. She has a real dog friend and plays with him! This is a first 😁 She enjoys her daily walks with them and gives lots of kisses during her twice a day cleaning and care sessions. They even changed their work schedules just to make sure she’s not alone too much. Athena is surrounded by LOVE. She is all healed up from her spay and is enjoying her retirement from breeding. Thank you Nick and Mandy for loving her so much! I could not have dreamed of a better life for her. Today is a day for gratitude and celebration for sure!

The Athena Tale Part Two:
Athena had a long road towards recovery ahead of her. Somehow, she maintained the ability to love and eventually trust humans. She was a Diva 🌟 from the moment we met her. She demanded attention and stole toys and woofed to let us know she wanted food or love. In the beginning she refused to exit the truck all day so we left it running with the air conditioning on until she felt brave enough to come inside. Her fears were probably realized when her foster dad took the clippers and spent the next four hours removing her matted fur. But afterwards she wagged her tail and felt so much better! She began muscle strengthening with what she could handle which was about 5 minutes of activity at a time. For months we scrubbed at her infected skin, applied goop to her elbows and eyes, flushed her ears, dragged her to the vet (where she made lots of friends!) and worked on her toenails. She not only tolerated all of this but gave us affection during what we lovingly referred to as “cleaning the folds”. Every day we saw her get a little stronger and a little more comfortable. She started leaving the safety of her room and relaxing with us instead. She learned potty training, obsession with toys and a love of comfy beds. Through all of it she had the blessing of so many people in this Newfoundland Club of New England Rescue and Referral community through encouragement and so many generous donations! Chairperson Beth Rossi through NCNERR never hesitated to give her the care she needs. Thousands of dollars were spent to get her healthy and ensure her needs are met.
She is truly an inspiration and reminder that we can get through the tough times when supported by love. Not a day goes by that I don’t admire this dog’s strength!
Athena’s story has a happy conclusion to be announced in part three!

26/11/2021

The Athena Tale Part One:
Athena was a puppy mill breeder. How do we know that without having witnessed it? Her medical condition tells it all.
As many of you know, Athena began her life (about 5 years give or take) living in a very small space where she rubbed her elbows raw and has huge hygromas from spending her life hunched on them. She was bred far beyond the number of times any reputable breeder would ever allow and from a too young age. Her muscles were weak from lack of movement and her teeth worn to clamshells from chewing on her crate. Her toenails curled painfully back in to her paws and her eyelashes curled inward scratching her eyeballs with every blink. Her fur never groomed, pulled tight on her skin from mats covering every inch.
Why am I sharing this? I want to raise awareness about where internet and pet store puppies come from. Please do your homework when searching for a puppy because that sweet ball of fluff might come from the suffering of dogs like this. Don’t support these puppy mills just because you don’t want to wait on a breeder’s list. Aside from the fact that these pups often have medical and behavioral problems, the parents are treated with appalling cruelty. We do not subscribe to the “adopt don’t shop motto”, that’s ridiculous because without good breeders, this breed we love so much would cease to exist. Just be cautious. If the breeder requires a deposit upfront or won’t let you visit their litter where they were whelped or you can go out and buy one the minute you decide you want one or the breeder can’t answer or won’t prove the health tests, run! Anyone can lift convincing photos off the internet. Anyone can purchase AKC registration.
No judgement if you already did this and didn’t know better. There was a time when I didn’t know either.
Hopefully this post raises awareness and helps us put these places out of business. They are most common in Missouri, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania but there are many right here in New England as well. Athena’s story has a happy ending to be announced soon!

07/11/2021

Athena is healing up beautifully from her spay! The surgeon suggested a special brace designed for hygromas and we were brainstorming some ideas to make something ourselves when two angels swooped in with kindness and generosity. Mandy and Nick Chomes provided us with a brand new custom made brace for Athena. I’ll never be able to truly express my gratitude for our community here. These dogs are so loved!
And an extra big bonus is how good she clearly feels with them on! You can see her stride is quick and confident instead of careful and splay legged. Wow what a difference already 🥺

How on earth is this boy still available??? He’s really as near perfect as you can get. He’s and absolute trifecta, good with kids, cats and dogs. He just needs a canine companion on the mellow side as he mirrors the energy of the dogs around him. He definitely needs work on his leash skills, which he’s already making tremendous strides with, but he needs a confident handler willing to continue that training, and set boundaries for him. He wants to please and he craves direction and leadership. He’s such a good boy with so much potential. ❤️❤️
