It is important to note that the coronaviruses affecting cats are different from the coronavirus which causes COVID-19 in people. In very technical terms, coronaviruses that affect cats (called feline coronaviruses or FCoV) are alpha-coronaviruses and the current SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus which causes COVID-19 in people is a beta-coronavirus. These are different diseases which occur in different species caused by different types of coronavirus. The FIP-causing feline coronavirus cannot affect people and, as far as we know, the COVID-19 causing coronavirus does not cause infection in cats.

The pathogenesis may be difficult to explain to pet owners. In addition to virus exposure, FIP development depends on environmental stressors, genetic predisposition, and random viral mutation. The disease is complex and can be best understood when described as a series of steps

Cats are exposed to FECV, which enters enterocytes using a spike (S) protein gene on the viral surface. Usually, FECV causes self-limiting gastroenteritis that is often undiagnosed. FECV may also spread systemically without causing FIP.

In some cats, the S protein gene mutates—the viral 3c gene may also be truncated—causing tropism to change from enterocytes to macrophages/monocytes; this mutated virus is referred to as FIP virus (FIPV). The mutated virus replicates within immune cells and is no longer transmissible through the fecal–oral route.
