Hi Everyone,
Rescues across our community are urging people to have a plan in place for their pets during the COVID-19 outbreak. Below are some helpful tips to help keep your pets safe if you can no longer care for them. Also, check out these Pet Emergency Cards!
Their Tips Include:
1. Find a temporary caregiver to take on your pets while you are hospitalized. If you don’t have anyone and you pet is from a rescue, please use the contact information for that rescue. Most rescues will want their pets returned, even if it is only temporarily.
2. Prepare a pet supply kit, which would include name & contact information for someone that can care for you pets, food, treats, leash, toys, supplies, crate to transport, vaccine records, collar with ID tags (also make sure microchip is current), Medications, daily care instructions, Veterinary information.
3. Know the facts about COVID and pets.
Along with your pet supply kit, we recommend having multiple Pet Emergency Cards that are easily accessible/noticed by first responders and hospital workers.
1. Post a full-size version of the card on your refrigerator so paramedics can easily find it if they come into your home and need to take you away, also have any pertinent medical documents about you it like, DNR papers, Power of Attorney, medications, allergies, etc. First responders often look at the refrigerator first for information.
2. Keep the smaller version in your glovebox. When responding to car accidents, first responders will try to avoid checking wallets, but will look in glove boxes, if you say, “Check my glovebox.”
3. Also keep a smaller version of the emergency card in your wallet. Hospital workers will your wallet for emergency contact information. This is in case the other 2 options are bypassed.
1. Pre-Qualification Procedure:
a. Application and video submitted via email to [email protected].
b. NCFN volunteers will review the application and video and call the applicant to go over any questions.
c. When applicant sees an animal they are interested in, they will notify the NCFN.
d. NCFN would then forward the information to the rescue/shelter that has that animal.
e. Rescue/Owner will contact the foster and work to determine foster environment, resources and capabilities.
f Once rescue/owner and potential fosters are in agreement, pick up arrangements will be made. Each rescue/owner will have their specific procedures for transferring the animal to the foster home. We recommend following CDC guidelines of social distancing when arranging the transfer.
1. Process for applicants not pre-qualified
a. Watch NOVA COVID Foster Network page.
b. When an animal comes up that you are interested in fostering, contact the rescue or owner.

NOVA COVID Foster Network (NCFN) was created to be a “one stop foster shop.“ Our world in Northern Virginia is changing rapidly, and now more than ever, the need to responsibly place animals into temporary, safe and loving homes is critical and could be the difference between life and death for many of these animals.
All rescues and owners in need of temporary or long-term coverage in Northern Virginia are welcome to post their animals available for foster/adoption. We invite our community members who are considering fostering to like and follow our page as well. Fosters can even pre-qualify to expedite the process.
This page is for all animals cared for by humans, including house pets and farm animals.
Legal Disclaimer: This page is for networking only. The rescues and owners are ultimately responsible for the health and welfare of their animals and where they go. NFCN will help, when we can, with things like transportation, vet care, food and other supplies.
Rules for the NOVA COVID Foster Network page:
1. Animal sales are not allowed.
2. Negative and judgmental comments are not allowed and will be deleted.
3. No arguing about the animals on FB.
4. Remember, we are all in this together. Be kind to each other.
