Common Name: Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater Tarantula

Category: New World

Endemic Location: Brazil

Diagonal Leg Span: 11” (28cm)

Growth Rate: Fast

Life Expectancy: Females 15 years / Males 5 years

Experience Level: Beginner

Lasiodora Parahybana, aka Salmon Pink Birdeater, is a New World Terrestrial Tarantula endemic to North Easter Brazil. This species is 3rd largest tarantula in the world growing anywhere from 9-11 inches. The Salmon Pink Birdeater is a very fast-growing tarantula and can reach adult sizes in as little as 2 years. Females can produce sacs that have anywhere between 1200-3000 eggs. Though this tarantula is large, its venom is not known to be medically significant, so the fangs would be potentially more painful than the venom. This species does possess urticating hairs, like most New World tarantulas.

My first tarantula just had it's second molt today morning, Grammostola pulchripes aka Choco Golden keen tarantula.

★What is tarantula molting?

Tarantulas have what's known as an exoskeleton, the stiff outer structure housing the spider's internal organs similar to how human skin protects internal organs. To grow larger, tarantulas must form a new exoskeleton and shed their previous, smaller coverings in a process called molting.

★Signs:
1. A decrease in appetites.
2. A decrease in activity.
3. Development of a bald spot
4. Increased use of webbing.
5. Dull coloration.

During a molt, a tarantula lays up-side down on her back or on her side to get out of the old skin easier. This happens when a tarantula is actively molting and the whole process takes just a few hours. If your tarantula is on her back or side, then she might be trying to molt her skin.

★Care after molt:
1. Leave your tarantula alone.
2. Remove the exoskeleton.
3. Skip feeding for 3-5 days.
